Power Generation At All Time Low, Situation May Worsen – FG

The Federal Government on Friday in Abuja raised alarm over dwindling and epileptic electricity supply across the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr Godknows Igali, made this known after a meeting with Vice-President Namadi Sambo to State House correspondents in Abuja.

Igali, and Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Minister of Power, had briefed Sambo on the state of power generation, transmission and distribution in the country.

He said the ongoing strike by Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas had further worsened the power supply situation.

The workers were protesting the transfer of the operatorship of the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 42 to two indigenous companies, claiming the move would affect the fortunes of NPDC and its staff.

“With the strike which has gone on for one or two days there is dramatic turn as of this afternoon we have gone down for the all-time low to 1,327 megawatts.

“So, if you look at it from 4,800 there is dramatic turn, the loss is terrible”, Igali said.

He said as at 12 noon May 22, 2015, Utorogu, CHEVRON ORE DO, OB EN gas plants were all shutdown while UGHELI and CNL ESCRAVOS were already isolated.

He said, “on the eastern axis Shell Gas, ALAKIRI has also been shut down. This has led to the several power plants being stranded and shutdown.

“This includes EGBIN, OLORUNSHOGO I & 11, OMOTOSHO 1& 11, GEREGU I & 11, IHONVOR and SAPELE (NIPP) on the western axis and ALAOJI on the eastern end”.

According to him, besides, pipeline vandalism which has continued to have very negative impact on the power supply situation in the country, the ongoing strike by the labour unions in the oil and gas sector has added additional toll.

“The overall effect is that power supply which had started picking up steadily since the beginning of the week following repairs of various vandalised portions of the ELP Line and the Trans-Forcados Gas Pipelines, has fallen to all-time-unprecedented low of 1,327m was at 1.00 p.m. May22, 2015.

He, therefore, warned that “situation could get worse if the strike continues”.

Igali expressed the hope that the ongoing discussion between the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and, the labour unions, would end amicably.

“Indeed, it is hoped the labour unions will help restore supply of gas to the power plants even while negotiation are ongoing”. (NAN)

Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo has implored Nigerians to sustain their support and prayers for the success of the incoming administration of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari.

He gave the advice on Friday in Abuja at the 2015 Presidential Inauguration Special Jumma’at Prayers held at the National Mosque.

Buhari, who is away in London on a private visit, was represented by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at the event, which is the first official transition programme ahead of the May 29 hand over date by President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We are praying for the successful inauguration of incoming administration of our President-elect Muhammadu Buhari and pray for the country for peace and development and for Allah’s guidance for the incoming administration to continue the progress and development of Nigeria”, Sambo said.

Atiku on his part expressed happiness that the special prayers went well and commended Nigerians for their supports and that they are looking forward to a successful transition and inauguration on May 29.

He said: “I am here to represent the president-elect with Governor (Aziz) Yari of Zamfara and some of the governors that accompany me. The prayers have gone on very well, we are grateful for all the support and cooperation of all Nigerians. We have prayed to have a successful transfer of power on the Inauguration Day which is on the 29th of May this year insha Allah”.

Nigerians Don’t Appreciate The Sacrifices Of Our Armed Forces – President Jonathan

The way Nigerians make negative comments about the Armed Forces and Police is a cause of concern for President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking on Friday, May 22, during the inauguration of the Armed Forces Radio, known as “Defence Radio 107.7 FM”, the president said the sacrifices of these security operatives is the reason some can sleep at night.

He, therefore, called for an end to the trend.

According to him, the coming on stream of the radio station will help to enhance the operations of the military.

He said, “Other nations even bring foreign media to cover some of their operations and things are exaggerated as if they even work harder than we do.

“So, today that we are launching your radio station will be a turning point, where some of our operations will be properly covered and Nigerians will know.

“If Nigerians know what you are doing and what you are passing through, Nigerians will remain grateful.

“And I use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians, both our senior citizens and ordinary citizens to appreciate the commitment and the sacrifices of our armed forces.

“We wouldn’t have been sleeping if these people are not working.

“I always feel a bit worried and sometimes angry when I read in the papers negative comments about our armed forces and the police.

“Ours is a society that sometimes doesn’t appreciate the commitment of individuals, the suffering of individuals.

“These people fight and some of them pay the supreme price, leaving widows and young children as orphans”.

President Jonathan noted that rather than commend and encourage members of the Armed Forces, Nigerians unduly criticize them.

He admitted that while it is normal for the society to criticize, it should show some level of respect for members of their security forces.

Richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote has denied dating former 2011 MBGN winner Sylvia Nduka.

“Nothing like that exists. In fact, if at all it exists, it does in the imagination of whoever cooked up the story. We are still investigating the original source of the mischievous and misleading story and will definitely take it up with them once we are done with that. We shall also issue an official statement, reb*tting the cock and bull story.“

“We just can’t understand how someone will wake up in the morning and begin to fabricate and spread falsehood aimed at tarnishing someone’s hard-earned reputation. The story is totally false. Totally false” said an insider close to Alhaji Aliko Dangote.
