Nigerian Army General, others arrested over Baga Attack

More than 10 senior Nigerian Army officers, including a Brigadier-General have been arrested and are telling the military hierarchy what they know about the Baga attack by the insurgent group, Boko Haram.

According to the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, the senior army officers are being investigated for allegedly shirking their responsibilities during the attack by the militants.

Those arrested are Brigadier-General Enitan Ransome-Kuti, his Chief of Staff Lt. Colonel G.A Suru. Others are the Commanding Officer of 134 and 174 battalions, Lt. Colonel Haruna and a certain Major aliyu.

The two Nigerian Army battalions are under the Multi-National Task Joint Task Force in Baga, attacked by the insurgents. Speaking on the arrest, General Olukolade said that the arrested officers were being investigated because at the time of the attack on the multinational headquarters in Baga, Brigadier-General Ransome-Kuti and his men were fully in charge of the military formation.

He said it was disappointing that the attack on Baga was not repelled by both battalions, despite having the necessary weapons to carry out the necessary operations. On January 3, 2015, suspected members of Boko Haram attacked the base of the Multinational Task Force in Baga, Borno State, dislodging the soldiers there. Reports say the troops were warned to be on alert following intelligence reports that terrorists would strike between January 22 and January 25.

Eyewitnesses said that the attack started around 5am when residents started hearing gunshots as the insurgents tried to gain entrance into the MNJTF premises. Many civilians living in the barracks were said to have been killed during the attack.

Jordan Demands ISIS Deliver Proof That Captured Pilot Is Still Alive.

The deadline of sunset Thursday for a possible prisoner swap set by the Islamic State group holding a Japanese journalist and a Jordanian military pilot has passed with no sign of whether the two men were still alive or not. Associated Press reports:

Japanese officials had no new progress to report Friday after a late night that ended with the Jordanian government saying it would only release an al-Qaida prisoner from death row if it got proof the airman was alive.

“There is nothing I can tell you,” government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

He reiterated Japan’s “strong trust” in the Jordanians to help save the Japanese hostage, freelance journalist Kenji Goto.

Suga said the government had been in close contact with Goto’s wife, Rinko Jogo, who released a statement overnight pleading for her husband’s life.

“I fear that this is the last chance for my husband, and we now have only a few hours left,” Jogo said in a statement released through the Rory Peck Trust, a London-based organization for freelance journalists.

14,000 PVCs Snatched By Hoodlums In Rivers – INEC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that over 14,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been snatched by hoodlums from its officials during the collection exercise in Rivers State.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Gesila Khan, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, on Friday.

According to Khan, some of the cards were stolen from collection centres in some local government areas, where the PVCs were deposited to enable the owners have easy access to them.

While it would mean that the owners would be disenfranchised, Khan expressed no panic, as she noted that the stolen cards would be useless. The card reader system would be used to authenticate and verify the real owner of the PVCs before they are allowed to vote.

Khan also disclosed that her office received 2,990,056 PVCs, out of which 1,869,379 had been distributed to eligible voters in the state.

She assured that more than 50,000 additional PVCs would be distributed two weeks before the general election, adding that over 80 percent of the registered voters in the state had so far collected their cards.

Khan also assured that the February elections would be peaceful because of the existing cooperation among INEC officials, police and other security agencies in the state.
