I’ll Punch Anyone Who Insults My Mother – Pope Francis

Pope Francis has warned that he was ready to punch anyone who insulted his mother.

The pontiff said this yesterday in remarks made en route to the Philippines from Sri Lanka, that “there are limits to freedom of expression and my mother was the limit.

“We have a duty to speak openly, to have this freedom, but without offending others.

“It’s true that you cannot react with violence, but if my aide Doctor Gasbarri, who is a friend, badmouths my mother, a punch would be coming for him,” he added.

The Pope said in relation to recent events in Paris that violence in the name of religion can never be justified, but that there are limits to freedom of expression.

“Many people badmouth religion, mock it, play with other people’s religion.

“It can happen, but there are limits. Every religion has dignity, every religion that respects life and human beings has dignity, and you cannot mock it,” he added.

The Pope warned, “You cannot provoke, insult, ridicule other people’s faith”.

Jonathan Defies INEC- Deploys Presidential Jets For Campaigns

President Goodluck Jonathan has deployed the jets in the presidential fleet for campaigns, while almost all state governors have been using the resources of their states for the February general elections, SUNDAY PUNCH’s investigations have shown.

A few weeks ago, political parties signed a code of conduct, which states that the use of government resources for political campaigns is unlawful. The Code is a document prepared by the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2013.

A part of the code of conduct states, “All political parties shall separate party business from government business. No political party shall use state vehicles or other public resources for any electioneering campaigns or any other party business.”

But contrary to the code of conduct, since Jonathan commenced his campaigns across Nigeria, virtually all the 11 jets in the presidential fleet have been used for one campaign trip or the other.

The Presidential Air Fleet include two Falcon 7X jets, two Falcon 900 jets, Gulfstream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One), and Gulfstream IVSP. Others are one Gulfstream V, Cessna Citation 2 aircraft and Hawker Siddley 125-800 jet.

The PAF is about the third largest domestic airline in the country, coming behind Arik Air, which has over 21 aircraft, and Aero Contractors, with about 12 planes.

Senior officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja told one of our correspondents on Friday that the brand of airplane and the number used by the President to any state depended on the size of the airport in the state, the number of persons in his entourage, as well as “other factors best known to the Presidency.”

The Presidency on Saturday however said there was nothing stopping Jonathan from using all the paraphernalia of his office while going round the country to seek votes.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH.

Okupe said there was nowhere in the world were incumbents are stopped from using their official cars while going on campaign trips.

Okupe said, “I am not aware of such code of conduct. You can check anywhere in the world. I watched Obama’s campaign, was he going around in taxis or private cars? When the governor of Lagos State was seeking re-election, was he going for campaigns in private cars?

“A sitting President has all paraphernalia of office anywhere he goes. The same applies to governors. They are not ordinary citizens, so when you are contesting against them, you know you are contesting against an institution. There is nothing you can do about that.

“I don’t think that code of conduct exists. So they want the President to be going about in one Peugeot 505 to seek votes? What about policemen? Are they not government officials? Are they not supposed to follow him because he is campaigning?

“It simply does not make sense. If INEC had such a document, let them publish it for us to see.”

State governors are also not left out of using state vehicles and resources to campaign.

In Kwara, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed; his deputy, Mr. Peter Kisira; and a former governor of the state, who is currently the Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Dr. Bukola Saraki, as well as their retinue of aides have been campaigning with government vehicles.

Sources informed one of our correspondents that bills for party members’ mobilisation and logistics for the campaign were allegedly footed by the state government.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, however said the state government was aware of INEC regulations prohibiting state governments from sponsoring campaigns.

Akorede said, “The APC is responsible for campaigns and all associated expenses. The flag off was funded by the party from members’ contributions, as well as donations by aspirants, their supporters and other party members. It is not true that the Ahmed administration funded the APC campaign.”

Similarly, the PDP-controlled government in Cross River has been campaigning for all the party’s candidates at all levels using government-owned vehicles. Some government vehicles have been seen in different parts of the state spotting the stickers of PDP candidates.

A top government official who preferred anonymity said, “If you think they will not use government funds to run campaigns, then you must be joking. You do not expect a governor or even the president to appear at campaign venues with private securities and personal vehicles when they are in control of the resources. It happens even in the United States.”

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Liyel Imoke, Mr. Christian Ita, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the governor would not drop his official designation because of campaigns.

Ita said, “This debate had been on for quite some time now. The governor cannot afford not to be governor because of political campaigns.”

In Kaduna, the administration of Governor Mukhtar Yero is also using state resources to promote the members of the ruling PDP.

Yero at different fora boasted that the government would deploy both material and human resources to trounce the main challenger, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Nasir el-Rufai.

Yero, at the flag-off of his 2015 governorship campaign, rode in his official Mercedes Benz E Class 350.
He has also toured the 23 local government areas of the state with the same vehicle.

Aside from fuelling and maintaining the vehicles, SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that most of the campaign vehicles, especially those acquired for the Kaduna State chapter of the Goodluck/Sambo 2015 Presidential Campaign Organisation were procured with state funds.

A competent government source said, “Recently, about 30 vehicles were procured for the purpose of campaigning for the Jonathan/Sambo presidency. These vehicles are fully financed by the state government under the guise of donation from political associates.”

Also in Ogun State, since Governor Ibikunle Amosun, kicked off his governorship re-election campaign tours two weeks ago, his official Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle and about five other SUVs, including Toyota Hilux vans and other official vehicles, were in the governor’s convoy to Ijebu Igbo, Remo North, Imekon Afon, Ewekoro and Ijebu North East Local Government Areas.

The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, however said the only official vehicles on the campaign train were those of the governor and that of the security agents.

He said, “Whoever is saying the governor is using the state resources to campaign should come and prove that. The governor uses his official vehicle and all the other ones you are seeing in the convoy are the ones bought by the campaign committee of the party, and they are appropriately branded and APC boldly written on them.

“The other vehicles that join the campaign train are that of security agents. And I don’t know any operational rule that says the security personnel assigned to the governor should use other vehicles.

“Again, there are vehicles that belong to friends of the governor and those of individual candidates. Those of the candidates are branded in their names. So what are they talking about?”

Same is happening in Rivers State where the All Progressives Congress is the ruling party. Our correspondent reports that luxury buses belonging to the state government are being used during campaigns.

A party chieftain who pleaded anonymity described the funding of campaign rallies as an “expensive venture.” He explained that it would be difficult for any candidate to win without government ‘support.’ Efforts to reach the Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Tony Okocha, to speak on the allegation failed as he said he he was attending a rally of the party and promised to call back. He failed to do this.

Similarly, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, does not pretend that he is supporting the state Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, in every way he can.

The governor has boasted that if an incumbent governor does not support any aspirant during elections, such aspirant is bound to be defeated.

Twenty-two aggrieved PDP governorship aspirants in the state had alleged that the governor spent N1.2bn to secure delegates’ votes for Emmanuel.

One of the delegates in the PDP governorship primary said, “Apart from making government vehicles and buildings available for the campaign, the governor has been spending a lot of money to ensure that his candidate wins.”

The APC on Saturday denied allegations that it was using government vehicles to campaign in states under its control.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Lai Mohammed, said this in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH.

He explained that he was not aware of any breach of the Independent National Electoral Commission Code of Conduct.

Mohammed said, “I am not aware of any breach by our party. I am not aware that any of our governors is using official vehicles for campaign.

“We only hope that the law applies to all parties including Mr. President and the ruling party, we hope he will not use the Presidential jet on his campaign train.”

Lawyers Kick

Some lawyers have condemned the use of public resources by elected public officers for electioneering campaigns.

One of them, Mr. Jiti Ogunye, said the trend was “a consolidation of the absurdity and aberration that have remained with us for some time.”

He said it was the same act of absurdity that had played out when the head of the National Orientation Agency accepted an appointment into the campaign committee of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ogunye said, “If public officers would not mind to be appointed to serve on a campaign committee of a candidate in an election, why will elected officers not see public resources at their disposal as a fair game?

“The practice is improper and it is prohibited not only by code of conduct for political parties but also public officers. It is condemnable; it confers undue advantage on those occupying office.”

Another lawyer, Mr. Fred Agbaje, said the act was a reflection of the culture of impunity that had dominated the country.

He said, “But for the culture of impunity that is cascading our political landscape and which, regrettably, has become public policy, why will anybody use facilities that is maintained by public purse for his campaigns?

“The act violates Sections 92 and 100(2) of the Electoral Act because public resources cannot be used for election expenses.”

Another lawyer, Mr. Malachy Ugwummadu, said the violation of the code of conduct and the Electoral Act had also extended to the use of public funds.

Ugwummadu said the act deprived the opposition parties the level playing field they deserved.

Parties responsible for compliance —Jega

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, however, stated that it was the responsibility of political parties to ensure compliance with the code of conduct.

His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kayode Idowu, referred SUNDAY PUNCH to Section 3 (17) of the code which states, “All political parties shall discourage their members in government from using their power of incumbency to the disadvantage of other parties or their candidates during campaigns.”

Section 10(4) also states: “Any dispute which cannot be resolved between parties shall be reported to the IPAC which shall give it a fair and expeditious hearing/s. The IPAC is empowered to recommend to INEC appropriate sanctions on erring political parties. This is without prejudice to the right of parties and their candidates or agents to pursue other legal actions.

All Elections In Nigeria Were Rigged Since 1960 - Jonathan

By Ben Agande and Peter Okutu, Abakaliki

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that there had not been any free and fair elections in the country since Nigeria’s independence in 1960, as what had been happening since then was that people have been “buying and selling votes.”

Jonathan, however asked Nigerians especially the youths not to allow anybody to buy their votes during the forth coming elections as this would not be allowed to continue.

He spoke at Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, while addressing a large crowd of party supporters at the Abakaliki Township Stadium in the course of his nationwide wide campaign.

Jonathan who is also, the presidential candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, wished that he would live to see a woman emerge as the president and as a governor in the country, pointing out that this was the major reason he had deliberately appointed women into prominent positions to expose and prepare them for greater challenges ahead.

At Least 5000 APGA Members In Imo Defect To PDP

At a rally held to receive the defectors at Saint Mary Primary school ground in Orlu town, the chairman of the PDP in the state, Mr Nnamdi Anyahie and other stalwarts of the party said the development was an indicator that “Imo State is predominantly a PDP state”.

They believe the defection would also boost the morale of the party in winning elections at all levels in the state come February.

Mr Anyahie maintained that the PDP in the state had put all strategies in place to claim the Governorship seat in the state in the coming elections.

“That is the main reason why members of other parties are identifying with the PDP,” he said.

The incumbent Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, is a member of the All Progressives Congress but was elected on the platform of the APGA. He had already started a statewide campaign to seek indigenes support in the governorship election.

He defected to the APC in 2013 along with some other governors that were members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

At a campaign rally on Saturday Governor Okorocha maintained that he remained a candidate to beat in the governorship election that will hold in February, as his good record of performance in the last three and a half years remained a landmark achievement in the history of governance in the state.

He promised that if elected into office for the second time, apart from consolidating the existing programmes, he would provide more industries, factories and job opportunities for the people of the state.

At a campaign rally held in Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, the Governor rolled out his agenda for his second term in office if elected.

Atiku, Kwankwaso, Others Have Abandoned Buhari, Says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari has been abandoned by the party leaders like former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso, the governor of Kano state.

In a statement issued by Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of the Poeples Democratic Party (PDP), in Abuja on Saturday he said the APC had continued to betray their inner aversion towards the candidacy of Buhari.

The statement contended that the APC leadership had abandoned Buhari’s campaigns for the February 14 presidential election. The claim has been denied by the APC.

“Most leaders of the APC do not believe in the personality of Buhari, resulting in flip-flops and double standards that had been the fate of his presidential campaign.

“Key APC leaders as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso and ex-presidential aspirant, Sam Nda-Isaiah have since abandoned Buhari.

“Lagos State Gov. Babatunde Fashola has not hidden his preference for a younger, more educated and articulate President who is able to connect with the current generation of citizens as embodied in President Goodluck Jonathan.”

The statement noted that Governor Fashola betrayed himself recently when he said Jimi Agbaje, PDP Lagos state governorship candidate, who is only 57 years old, was too old to govern Lagos state.

“This is indeed the height of hypocrisy considering the fact that Fashola was on the other hand campaigning for 73-year old Buhari to become the President of Nigeria.”

It recalled that Fashola had earlier said that: “If you put an old man there, he cannot do it. If you call him in the night, he may not pick your calls.”

The statement wondered “who better fits into this picture than Buhari who could not remember the name of his running mate at his campaign rally in Owerri.”

It added that Buhari also nearly fell while trying to climb the stage in Calabar during the ACP rally in Cross River.

“In spite of his later attempt to remedy the situation, deep inside his heart, Fashola harbours an aversion to a Buhari presidency as evidenced in his earlier statements,” the statement said.

It quoted Fashola as having said that: “When 40-year olds are now leading nations and our 40-year olds can’t even get to the Senate, they can’t even become governors.

“We cannot point to success in other countries and refuse to do what those people are doing to get things right.”

This, it said, like many Nigerians put it, was a coded way of saying Buhari was too old to be the President of the Nigeria.

The statement added that the PDP was however, not surprised at the double standard being displayed by APC leaders, describing such as “one of their stocks-in-trade”.

It recalled that the former APC Interim Deputy National Secretary, now Kaduna state governorship candidate and a Buhari supporter, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, had described him as: “perpetually unelectable”.

El-Rufai, it recalled, said he was 25 years old when Buhari was Head of State and wondered why he would not allow younger generation as symbolised in President Goodluck Jonathan, to have a shot at the position.

“El-Rufai had also called on young Nigerians to take their future into their hands and ensure that they voted for a new generation of leaders,” Metuh said in the statement.

Police Arrest Mad Rams For Attacking 65-Year-Old Woman In Ado-Ekiti.

Two rams have been arrested by the Police in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, for attacking and injuring a 65-year-old woman popularly called ‘Iya Oyo’.

Narrating her ordeal, Iya Oyo said she was on her way to a commercial bank in Okesa area with her son on Monday to withdraw some money when one of the rams reportedly owned by a manager of a filling station in the area, went berserk and gored her, fracturing her right thigh.

The victim, who was writhing in pains at a traditional orthopedic clinic where she was rushed to by sympathisers, said that she fell immediately after the attack and became unconscious only to find herself at the clinic where she regained consciousness.

According to her, “on the fateful day, I was going to the Union Bank with my son.

We were walking on the walkway and saw the rams in front of us but not knowing what was on their mind. Immediately they sighted us coming, one of them rushed and hit me several times with its horns. Immediately, I fell but as I was struggling to get up, the second ram joined the first to attack me. Thank God that some people came and saved me from untimely death in the hands of these ‘mad rams’”.

Residents of the town, who pleaded anonymity, described the rams as “too notorious and always ready to attack people at sight”.

“We have complained several times to the owner of the rams to tame them but to no avail. The animals are always roaming the streets and daring people”, they said.

It was learnt that the owner of the rams has since gone into hiding since the attack took place without offering any form of assistance to the victim.

The director of the trado-medical centre, Chief Ezekiel Ogunjemilusi, said Iya Oyo was brought to his clinic with fractures on two sides of her right leg noting that the injury will take few weeks to heal.

Though there was no official statement on the incident, a highly placed police officer at the Area command confirmed the attack.

Hours after the interview went viral Jason took to his instagram page to post a receipt for the car purchase, and circled key information on the receipt including that it was the same “4 Door Sedan” and that he paid “$74,431.22” for it, plus a “Dealer Administrative Fee,” of $599.00, which all came to about $75,000.

Sociedad Coach David Moyes Gets Two-Match Touchline Ban.

Real Sociedad coach David Moyes has been handed a two-game touchline ban by the Spanish Football Association.

Moyes was sent off during the Copa del Rey draw with Villarreal in Anoeta on Wednesday. He was cautioned for protesting a decision in the last 16, second leg tie and received a second booking, hence his marching order for complaining about an offside with around 10 minutes remaining. Villarreal advanced into the quarter-finals with a 3-2 aggregate following an earlier 1-0 win.

The former Manchester United coach leaped over a fence into the stands to watch the rest of the proceedings and even accepted an offer of crisps from a girl sitting behind him.

Moyes, who joined the Spanish club last November, received a game suspension for the sending-off and another for climbing into the stands.

“I shouldn’t have argued with the referee but I thought both of the decisions were incorrect,” Moyes said, in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s La Liga game at home to Rayo Vallecano.

“But I left the dugout and I went to watch the game in the stands. I am a football supporter as well and I wanted to watch the game with the supporters.

“I’ve been a supporter all my life. I go to a lot of football games and I though the supporters were very good. So yeah it happens and whatever comes around I’ll have to accept.”

Sociedad are 12th in La Liga with just under half the season played on 19 points from 18 matches.

Pres. Jonathan Hopeful Woman Will One Day Become President In Nigeria.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday expressed the hope of a woman becoming Nigeria’s president in his life time.

Mr. Jonathan, who said this at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential rally in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, noted that women in the country are intelligent and hard working.

He insisted that women should be encouraged to participate in governance, especially politics.

“My hope is that a female will one day occupy the position of the president of this country.

“I will also like to see Nigerian women who have distinguished themselves in their various field make more global impact”, he said.

Mr. Jonathan, who commended women for supporting PDP, solicited their support by voting for him in the Feb. 14 presidential poll.

Similarly, the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, who addressed women at the campaign, urged them to vote for the president as “one of their own”.

“Nigerian women, you cannot exchange your own for another.

“You must belong to a place or group where you are accorded full recognition.

“And PDP is that place; we have no other party”, she said.

227 Soldiers Protest Unlawful Dismissal By 3 Armoured Div., Jos.

SOME OF THE DISMISSED SOLDIERS DURING THEIR PROTEST IN JOS … FRIDAY. (PHOTO: GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER)

About 227 members of the Nigerian Army, who were allegedly dismissed by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured Division Jos, Plateau State, yesterday protested their unlawful dismissal by the GOC, asking President Goodluck Jonathan and Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, to intervene in the matter with a view to reinstating them.

The soldiers, who stormed the Plateau State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat with placards bearing different messages, among them, “how can we fight without weapons and we need justice in Nigerian Army”.

The leader of the protesting soldiers, Sergeant Abiona Elisha, said, “We were dismissed this week Tuesday from the service of the Nigerian Army after sending us to go and suffer fighting insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.

“All of a sudden, we were recalled to the barracks and made to face trial. Even in the trial, we were not given the chance to defend ourselves.

They just took decision and dismissed us. We were not even told what our offences were during the so-called trial.

“We are surprised that we can be treated like this in our own country. We were sent to fight insurgents without weapons. A lot of our colleagues were killed in the course of defending our fatherland. Even those who are in hospitals treating injuries they sustained from battle fields were also dismissed while still on hospital admission.

“The worst situation is that families of our colleagues killed in Adamawa and Yobe are languishing in hunger as Nigerian Army refused to pay their entitlements”.

The protesting soldiers further alleged that their families as well as personal property were ejected from the barracks before they arrived in Jos from their operational base in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

However, when contacted, the deputy director, army public relation of the 3 Armoured Division Jos, Col. Texas Chukwu, denied knowledge of the dismissal of the soldiers.

He said, “I have no knowledge of the issue, I just came back from Maiduguri, I am not aware if any soldier was dismissed”.

Similarly, the Nigerian Army headquarters denied that there was a protest by soldiers in Jos.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Olajide Laleye, said he was yet to be briefed on any such development by the authorities of 3 Armoured Div. Jos.

A 46-year-old farmer, Olubusayo Sunday, beheaded his wife and daughter, before taking his own life Wednesday in Onigbedu town in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, police said.

While confirming the incident on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Command said the incident has been traced to a dispute between the man and his late wife.

Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said investigations are ongoing.

“The man beheaded his wife and daughter in his Onigbedu house, and committed suicide by stabbing and setting himself ablaze after the ugly incident at about 1315hrs,” Mr. Adejobi said.

He said the man’s attempt to commit suicide was noticed when he stabbed himself and wanted to jump into a well near his house having set fire on himself. He was prevented and rescued by neighbours who later realized he had murdered his family.

The Command spokesman said after the rescue, the man was rushed to hospital where died.

Mr. Adejobi said statements made by the man before he died suggested there was a quarrel between the man and his wife, Oyewole Sunday, 40. Their daughter was three years old, police said.

The police added that a knife and one blood-stained cutlass, suspected to have been the murder weapons, were recovered from the house.

“The Commissioner of Police Ogun State, Ikemefuna Okoye, was taken aback when he received the report of the ugly incident and has directed that the matter be transferred to the department of criminal investigation Eleweran, Abeokuta for thorough investigation,” Mr. Adejobi said.
