3 Foods to Improve/Boost Male Health.

No. 1: Oysters

Could there be something to the legend that oysters are

the food of love? Well, it's true that just a few oysters

each day will deliver a full day's supply of the antioxidant

mineral zinc. Zinc is involved in hundreds of body

processes, from producing DNA to repairing cells.

"Research shows that adequate zinc may protect against

cellular damage that leads to prostate cancer," says

Grotto. "Sexual functioning of the male reproductive

system, including increased sperm counts, is also

enhanced with zinc."

You can also get your daily recommended dose of 11

milligrams a day by eating other shellfish, lean beef, lean

pork, or legumes. No. 2: Bananas

Bananas are a great portable source of quick energy and

are rich in potassium, which is needed to regulate nerves,

heartbeat and, especially, blood pressure. Diets rich in

potassium and magnesium (which is also found in

bananas) can reduce the risk of stroke.

As a super source of vitamin B-6, bananas can also aid

your immune system, help form red blood cells, ensure a

well-functioning nervous system, and assist protein

metabolism. So enjoy a banana each day, at breakfast on

your whole grain-cereal or before your workout at the

gym.

Not a banana fan? Orange juice, milk, tomato products,

and beans are other good sources of dietary potassium. No. 3: Fatty Fish

No list of superfoods would be complete without the

healthy fat, omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated

fats are the preferred form of fats in your diet for many

reasons. They can benefit the heart, circulation, and

immune system and reduce the risk for prostate cancer,

among other things.

"Omega-3 fatty acids are potent anti-inflammatory foods

that can help lower triglyceride [blood fat] levels, reduce

aches and pains in athletes, and offer relief with certain

kinds of arthritis," says Bauer.

Fatty fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, herring) are

the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. In fact the

American Heart Association recommends that everyone

eat fish twice weekly.

You can also get omega-3s in plant-based foods, like

flaxseed, walnuts, soy, canola oil, and fortified products

such as eggs. But there are other good reasons to eat fish.

"Fatty fish are also a good source of vitamin D, a nutrient

that tends to be deficient in our diets and [which] in

adequate supply can help prevent cancer, type 2

diabetes, high blood pressure and bone disease," says

Bauer.

Today Is Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day!

Today is Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day!

In Nigeria, Armed Forces Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is celebrated on 15 January. It was formerly marked on 11 November of every year to coincide with the Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) for the World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations. But it was changed to 15 January of every year in Nigeria in commemoration of the surrender of Biafran troops to the Federal troops on 15 January 1970 thus signalling the end of the Nigerian Civil War.

The day is marked by with a Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph in Abuja and in the 36 state capitals. The ceremony includes 21 gun salute, playing of the Last Post, a minute's silence, laying of wreaths and release of pigeons to symbolise peace.

In the past month armed forces remembrance day emblems have been on sale across the country. Proceeds of the sale of the remembrance emblem go to the Nigerian Legion.

The Nigerian Legion is the Nigerian association of ex-servicemen, I.e former members of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force (although I have never seen the likes of Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, or T.Y Danjuma associate with the Legion).

Officers and men of the armed forces are trained to fight and kill. When they retire, they discover that there are no jobs for them (some of them have been in the armed forces since they were teenagers and military work is all they know). Others were forced to retire from the armed forces due to injuries sustained in battle. The Legion helps them to integrate into society and take care of themselves.

By law the Legion is permitted to operate certain businesses in order to raise money for its members. Members of the legion also serve as security guards at government establishments (you often see them in their brown uniforms). The Legion also raises money through the sale of Armed Forces and Remembrance Day emblems.

In recent years (especially since the return to civilian rule) members of the Legion have gone through great hardship while trying to collect their pensions and gratuity. Sometimes their pensions are not paid for many months. At other times, legionnaires, who could be as old as 60, 70, or 80 years old are made to travel long distances and queue in the hot sun, all in the name of pension verification exercise. Many legionnaires have died during this process.

Boko Haram ‘Killed Woman in Labour’ – Amnesty

Boko Haram fighters killed a woman as she was in labour during what is feared could be the deadliest attack in the militants’ six-year insurgency, Amnesty International claimed on Thursday.

The human rights group said one witness to the assault on Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad in northeast Nigeria, told them the woman was shot by indiscriminate fire that also cut down small children.

“Half of the baby boy (was) out and she died like this,” the unnamed witness was quoted as saying.

Amnesty said this week that hundreds of people, if not more, may have been killed in the attack, which began on January 3 and is thought to have targeted civilian vigilantes helping the military.

“They killed so many people. I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing,” a man in his fifties was quoted as saying.

Another woman added: “I don’t know how many but there were bodies everywhere we looked.”

The testimony chimes with claims from local officials that huge numbers were killed and that of witnesses spoken to by AFP, who described seeing decomposing bodies littering the streets.

Jonathan, Buhari Disagree On 2011 Post-Election Crisis, Sign Pact Ahead Of February Polls

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Wednesday that the post- election violence that erupted in some northern states in 2011 was not caused by electoral malpractices.

Many including 10 members of the National Youth Service Corps died in the violence that erupted after the 2011 presidential poll.

The President, who spoke in Abuja at an election sensitisation workshop on non-violence ahead of the 2015 general elections, said the fear to accept defeat was responsible for the violence.

A former Head of State and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who also spoke at the event, reiterated the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct credible poll as a panacea to post-election violence this year.

He recounted his experience of having to resort to court to challenge the outcome of the presidential elections in which he was a candidate in 2003, 2007 and 2011.

But Jonathan disagreed with Buhari on the cause of the post-election violence, insisting that election malpractices were not necessarily the cause of post-election violence.

He, therefore, charged the next National Assembly to look into the nation’s laws with a view to amending them in order to give room to parties with substantial popularity to be part of government formed by the party which polled the highest votes.

He said, “If you look at the 2011 election, we approached it better and I’m quite pleased that a number of civil society activists are here; a lot of observers are here and they did mention that the 2011 election was much better any election conducted by the country . We thank Prof. Attahiru Jega and his team.

“But even then at the end of the election there was violence in some parts of the country. In Kano, properties were destroyed, residential homes were burnt down, and business premises were burnt down. In Bauchi State, 10 young corpers that were involved in the election were slaughtered. Then we asked what led to this level of violence? The violence came when election result was being announced.

“INEC had announced results at every polling unit. The violence didn’t come up in the middle of the election. The results collated had already been announced. But as we are approaching towards the end, it was clear that maybe a candidate was likely to win and violence erupted in Kano and in Bauchi.

“We cannot say there were malpractices to favour the candidate that won because in Kano we got 16 per cent, in Bauchi I got 15 per cent of the votes – those were the least. Even in states where we got 80 per cent or more than 50 per cent, even in opposition states, there was no violence.

“So you see what leads to violence sometimes is not necessarily electoral malpractices but some other causes of violence.”

The President, who said a total of about N10bn had been paid to compensate victims of the 2011 post-election violence, again charged INEC to ensure that no eligible Nigerian was disenfranchised in the forthcoming elections.

He said failure to ensure that every Nigeria voted in the forthcoming polls was a recipe for violence.

The President said, “A number of Nigerians are complaining that they don’t have permanent voter card, what INEC calls the PVC.

“If some people don’t have permanent voter card, the assumption is that, from the beginning, INEC wants to rig election and there is the tendency for those kinds of people to go violent.

“I have been mentioning this to the INEC chairman that you must make sure that every Nigerian votes. If INEC is unable to make sure that every Nigerian votes, that is a recipe for violence.”

At the workshop where a former Secretary-General of the United Nation, Kofi Annan, was a special guest of honour and chaired by a former Secretary-General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the presidential candidates in the forthcoming poll signed a five-point accord for peace ahead of the general elections.

Buhari said when Nigeria returned to democracy “16 years ago, we hoped that the developed countries which went through the painful processes of stabilising their system, should learn from them rather than insisting to make the same mistake.”

He said the speeches by speakers at the event were only anchored on hope as his past experience about elections in the country had been nasty.

He recounted how his party competent agents were able to show how he was programmed to lose 40 per cent and 26 per cent respectively in two northern states in 2011.

He said, “They (the agents) compared the results against the INEC register and they put it in the computer garbage in garbage out. What came out is that the presidential candidate of that party was programmed to lose 40 per cent of its scores and when it was done in another state it was 26 per cent.”

Recalling that the cases he filed to challenge the outcome of the three presidential elections all ended at the Supreme Court, he said he spent 13 months in court in 2003, 18 months in 2007 and nine months in 2011.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, also gave an undertaking that it would not be partisan in conducting the general elections, adding that all candidates would be given a level playing field.

Anan said that Nigeria faced a critical test in the 2015 elections, apart from the barbaric Boko Haram insurgency and the falling oil price and its impact on the economy.

He stated that the success of the elections was crucial to the future of the nation and Africa, noting that chaotic elections would send a bad signal out at this crucial time.

Anan therefore challenged the stakeholders to ensure fair, free and peaceful elections, stressing that the success of the polls was not the sole responsibility of INEC.

According to him, political parties, their candidates and supporters all share responsibilities for ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections.

FG Signs MOU With Chinese Companies On Power Transmission

DETERMINED to correct weak capacity of transmission in the Nigerian electricity value chain, Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, has tasked the Chinese companies to fill in the gap, so as to boost the nation’s capacity to wheel generated power to end users.

The minister, at the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chinese companies, identified the critical role of transmission, saying that it was needless if generated power could not be used.

While calling for more foreign investment, the minister identified the Chinese as special people that had capacity to identify opportunities, “little wonder that China is doing so well with us in the sector.”

According to him, “we will continue to support and defend your interests and investments here,” but he requested the Chinese to do even more in terms of investing in the sector, adding that in the area of renewable energy, a lot of opportunities still existed.

Professor Nebo counselled the Chinese to build synergy with distribution and generation companies, as they could build mutual relationship in the area of embedded or generated power within a locality and get such distributed through the distribution companies in the area.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mariam Olusola Akomode, chairperson of Cartlark International, assured the minister that the company would move along with the transformation agenda of the administration.

“For a country like Nigeria that is in a hurry to develop its critical infrastructure, the private-public partnership (PPP) model is a viable option,” adding that its company would explore PPP to finance its transmission projects as planned.

Representatives of SinoHydro Nigeria, Gan Yongzhi, said his company was ready to promote the project in line with the agreement signed, assuring that the project would be realised on record time.

PDP Lacks Integrity To Query Buhari’s Certificate, Says Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lambasted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify APC presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari over certificate issues.

Tinubu, who spoke yesterday during the APC’s rally in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, described PDP as a “shameless” party.

He said: “I laugh when the incapable government of Nigeria, the Poverty Development Party has nothing to say; they have the temerity to question the educational qualification of General Buhari and look for his certificate. Aaaaaaa! (laughter) Shame on them… what an insult!.

“The Armed Forces institution… Don’t go through General Buhari, ask the military. After all, he went to Army school – from Cadet School, he got a star. From there, he became Colonel, dem no talk. Then Major, dem no talk, from Brigadier General to General, dem no talk. He went to war and came back, dem no talk. They (military) sent him to Army School in London, he passed; you (military) also sent him to United States where he and white Americans did left, right, left, he passed. He came back and was not removed from the Army. He became Head of State. Nobody talked about his certificate. Since he has been contesting for the presidency, no one complained about his certificate. Now that we begged him to come and rule, they are asking for his certificate. I don’t want to follow a leader who lies.”

Tinubu reiterated that Gen. Buhari is the right person Nigeria needs at this challenging period.

“Every nation,” he said, “has a period of challenges.” “When United States was challenged, they turned to a war great man, their ex-military general, Harrison Iowa; when the French were challenged, they turned to General Charles de Gaulle; when Britain was challenged, they turned to their great general, Winston Churchill. Today, Nigeria is challenged, economically challenged, physically challenged and security challenged; who do we turn to… General Muhammadu Buhari. He is the real man for the job; if you talk of military experience, he has it abundantly; if you talk of courage, he has it abundantly; if you talk of simplicity, he has it abundantly; if you talk of great determination, a combination of mission and ability to perform, honesty and integrity, he has it abundantly, abundantly, abundantly…”

Tinubu flayed President Goodluck Jonathan’s 10 million jobs promise made at a campaign in Ibadan on Monday.

He said: “Today, many of our youths are unemployed and only yesterday (Monday), the man (Jonathan) promised 10 million jobs. He has spent six years without securing jobs for our children and now you are looking for votes. Is he a liar or not? Lies have torn their umbrella. They are failures. Under free economy aspect, they cannot create jobs for you. Are you not tired of it? You went to the university for seven or eight years for a four-year course. Are you not tired of it? School fees are becoming a thing of tears. Are you not tired of it? I can teach them how to create the jobs locally. We will give you student loan. Our programme – four years would be four years. You will not stay beyond four years before graduating from the university. By your fourth year, you will be taken through that critical path.

“You have not been able to create that job for six years. You assembled our youths at the stadium in Abuja, Owerri, Enugu, everywhere and told them to pay for forms; they died without getting job. You did not show remorse. Nobody was sacked; and now he is making another promise. Who are you deceiving? PDP! Don’t be deceived. If they want to continue to say we are sadistic, we are not. Our children are dying. Our nation, our being, devastated through the hail of bombs. If your son comes back from school and says he has failed, you tell him to look for another job. Jonathan said he has failed; let him go and look for another job. We don’t want a President that can’t perform. It is not his fault; he does not have what it takes to rule Nigeria. Let him go and rest at home.”

How The Elections Are Already Being Rigged - Vanguard

LET me start by wishing you a Happy New Year, 2015. May I also wish Nigeria a peaceful election and transition to the next regime.

Paramount in my mind (and it should be in yours too) is that we must have a smooth and rancour-free transition. For me, its not who wins that matters. A successful transition with the nation remaining intact is more important than any presidential candidate. Without peaceful Nigeria, there will be no political party, no presidential candidate, no elections, let alone economic prosperity. I am deeply worried about threats of any kind by politicians desperate for power at all costs. It is this desperation that fuels all sorts of electoral malfeasance, particularly that thing they call “election rigging”. The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened repeatedly that they will form a “parallel government” if the 2015 elections are rigged. President Goodluck Jonathan, while inaugurating his presidential election council replied to that threat with ominous words: “we shall see”.

To begin with, what is a “rigged election”? Any fouling of the rules of the game encapsulated in the laws of the land, especially the constitution, the electoral law and guidelines spelt out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) constitutes election rigging. Anything done to ensure that an election is not free, fair and reflective of the true wishes of the electorate, constitutes election rigging. For an election to be seen to be free, fair and credible, all the stakeholders in an election must play the game according to the rules. Who are these stakeholders?

The most prominent stakeholder in the coming elections is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It is the body set up and empowered by the constitution to regulate and conduct elections in Nigeria. INEC, which is headed by Professor Attahiru Jega, had four years to prepare for this election, but in its usual sloppiness, it has put the election in danger. With just one month to the presidential election, Nigerians are still battling to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), forcing President Goodluck Jonathan to direct that all eligible Nigerians must be able to vote. Information has it that the PVC collection rate has been more in the Arewa zones of North East and North West than the rest of the country.

Unless the distribution rate improves in the south before election, it might lead to massive disenfranchisement of voters in some parts while those in other parts are unduly favoured. What else is rigging? The INEC must ensure that all eligible voters in all parts of the country get their PVCs or it must bear the consequences of favouring a particular presidential candidate by pushing PVCs to areas he has massive support, while starving the other. Right now, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, is having the advantage of his support base being almost over-supplied with the PVCs.

The political parties are also major stakeholders. So far, I think the PDP and APC have done well trying to focus on the issues, even though the usual jabs below the belt are there. However, the war at the social media level is horrible because for now it is not regulated. The social media could create problems because it is a free zone for all manner of mischief makers.

The parties have handled themselves well. The same cannot be said for their supporters in some parts of the country. Already, there has been a reign of intimidation and reported violence. The major flashpoints are in Arewa north, Jos and Rivers State. In Arewa north (Buhari’s main support base) supporters of President Jonathan are living under threats. His posters are not being allowed to be displayed. Those who try are threatened with death. Known Jonathan supporters are bombarded with threats of their elimination along with their family members. Even governors have not been spared. There are some parts of the North where no bus bearing the campaign insignia of the president can dare to travel the roads for fear of being attacked. We read in the media a few days ago about a couple of the president’s campaign buses being razed in Jos in an area populated by Hausas, who were shouting they did not want Jonathan. If you do not want Jonathan why not wait and say so on February 14th with your vote? Why deprive the president of his right to campaign?

Meanwhile, Buhari and his campaign train are enjoying an unfettered run through the three zones of the South. Apart from a reported case of gun attack and bombing of APC secretariat in Okrika by unknown persons, Buhari has addressed his supporters in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Calabar, Aba and Owerri without any harassment. He was even given a chieftaincy title by the traditional ruler of Eziama Aba, Eze Isaac Ikonne. In fact, Buhari’s campaign has been so smooth that one of his ardent supporters from Zaria has been ecstatically calling my line rejoicing that Buhari is making “in-roads” and South East and South-South, which are Jonathan’s main support base.

With Jonathan’s supporters being attacked and threatened with death in Arewa North, while Buhari’s campaign train is being allowed to enjoy his constitutional right to campaign in all parts of the south, it is obvious that the elections are already being rigged in the North against Jonathan. The INEC and the political rabble in the North must allow a level playing ground for all candidates to canvass for support. Otherwise, the election cannot be free and fair. Unless the situation is corrected, it can be interpreted that Nigerians are not yet ready for the elections. There must be a level playing field for everybody. Just as APC says it will form a parallel government if the elections are rigged, I don’t think their opponents will fold their arms when they are being deprived of their constitutional rights.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Amnesty International Releases Satellite Images Of Boko Haram Wreckage

Shocking satellite images of destroyed towns and razed houses have confirmed eyewitness accounts that Boko Haram slaughtered hundreds of people this month in its worst-ever massacre in Nigeria, human rights groups say.

The wave of savage attacks continued relentlessly for several days after Boko Haram captured the Baga military base on Jan. 3. The Nigerian military has insisted that only 150 people died, including militants, but the newly released satellite images suggest a far more horrifying toll.

Satellite pictures obtained by Amnesty International show the towns of Baga and Doron Baga on January 2 – before the attack – and five days later, 3700 structures have been damaged or destroyed.

According to Daniel Eyre, researcher for Amnesty International, who has spent the last week compiling eye-witness accounts, gunmen went house to house, pulling people out and shooting them. Residents of the town fled into the bush, but Boko Haram men were waiting for them there, hiding in the trees, and shooting anyone who passed.

Eye-witnesses talk of hundreds of bodies in the streets, but they were fleeing too fast to stop and count. Government officials at first were silent and then came out with contradictory numbers.

“But it’s important to note that Boko Haram kill all civilians, not just the militia,” he said.

Alexis Okeowo, one of the best and bravest journalists in Nigeria, has also reflected on the impossibility of getting reliable death tolls from a place where journalists risk being killed or kidnapped

She is, however, sure that this situation is not inevitable.

‘The sad fact is that Boko Haram could have been defeated by now, by a more competent and more determined Nigerian government,’ she writes.

The images show more than 3,700 damaged or destroyed houses in just two of the estimated 16 towns and fishing villages that the Islamist extremist militia attacked around Baga in northeastern Nigeria on the shores of Lake Chad, according to Amnesty International, one of the groups that released the satellite images.

Dear LIB readers, Will my husband accept gestational surrogacy?

From a female LIB reader

My heart is very heavy as I write this. I don't know what to do but I need some advise. During my last pregnancy, I suffered a very serious complication. The doctors said I would not be able to have children again. My husband doesn't know about this and I don't know if I should tell him. We have 2 girls, I know the African mentality of wanting to have a son. I am just shattered. I don't even know how to continue to live on because I always wanted more children. I am trying to explore the option of gestational surrogacy and I dont know if my husband would be open to this idea.

You have two children already and don't know how to continue living because you can't have more? Hmm. OK. Any answers for her?

New Issue of Charlie Hebdo Sells Out Within Hours

The first edition of Charlie Hebdo published after the deadly attacks by Islamist gunmen sold out in France within minutes of newspaper kiosks opening yesterday (Wednesday, January 14).

People queued up to buy copies to support the satirical weekly, which will distribute 2,000 copies in Britain this week. A print run of up to 3 million copies was ordered for what is being called “the survivors’ edition” after the initial release of 700,000 sold out.

Police Find Man’s Head in Ebute Meta, Body in Surulere

The Police in Lagos State have recovered the mutilated remains of a man, identified only as Christmas, which were dumped at two different areas of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim’s head was found at Olokodana junction in the Ebute Meta area, while his body was recovered in Alaka, Surulere, on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the identities of Christmas’ killers were, however, yet to be unravelled by the police.

A lodger, who was passing by the junction around 7am, was said to have raised the alarm, having discovered the head in a pool of blood.

Our correspondent gathered that two factions of hoodlums in Ebute Meta – Oto and Olokodana gangs – had since 2010, engaged one another in supremacy battle, which had allegedly claimed no fewer than 20 lives.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Friday, January 9, the killing of one Waheed Yusuf (aka Skippo) said to be the leader of the Olokodana gang.

He was allegedly killed in his house on Fagbayimu Street, Olokodana, Old Apapa Road, by some unknown gunmen.

A resident in the area, Tunde Adeniyi, told our correspondent that Christmas, who used to belong to the Olokodana gang, had abandoned the gang and was planning to leave the neighbourhood on Wednesday before he was killed.

He said, “I saw him packing his luggage on Tuesday. He said he was no longer interested in the clashes, adding that most of the top men in his (Olokodana) group were dead.

“He even said the motive of the rivalry was baseless, so he would rather quit and leave the community. I was surprised when I saw his head this morning. His body was later found in Surulere by the police.”

An eyewitness, who gave his name simply as Kola, said men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed the community on Monday to avert an imminent clash.

“SARS came here late evening on Monday and raided everywhere. They recovered guns and arrested some hoodlums, including a lady,” he said.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the recovery of the head in Ebute Meta.

He, however, said he had not been briefed on the recovery of the victim’s body.

He said, “A bodiless head belonging to a yet-to-be-identified male was recovered at Olokodana junction, Ebute Meta, by policemen from the Iponri Division acting on a tip-off.

“The head has been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital morgue, while investigations aimed at unravelling and apprehending the characters behind the act have been activated.

“Members of the public are enjoined to avail us information that will aid diligent investigation. I have not got any information on the recovery of his body in Surulere.”

Nigerian Soldiers Triumphed Over Boko Haram In Biu, Kill Dozens

Soldiers of the Nigeria Army in Borno State yesterday triumphantly walked over corpses of slain Boko Haram terrorists after a heated gun battle between them and the insurgents at a village near Biu town, security sources said.

Boko Haram had early yesterday morning attacked the towns of Yimirshika, Shaffa and Azare but did not see victims to kill as the residents had fled after learning of the impending invasion.

The terrorists, according to a spokesman of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Muhammed Gava, who were disappointed by the situation, decided to march on towards Biu town, driving in two trucks, but they were killed to the last man by soldiers who lay in ambush for them.

Gava narrated what happened: “After failing to achieve their evil mission in Yimirshika, Shaffa, Azare villages of Hawul local government area, they decided to drive towards Biu, but unknown to them, the soldiers in Biu Barracks, who had mobilized, waited in ambush in Azare where they engaged them with heavy shootout that left not a single one of them alive.”

The source said the two Toyota Hilux vans the insurgents came in and other assault rifles were recovered by the military.

A top security officer in Maiduguri who spoke to LEADERSHIP on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the press confirmed the report.

The Truth About The Early 1900s Nigeria Vs India Football Match (1 - 99)

Virtually everybody born before the invention of the internet must have heard the tale of a nonexistent football match between Nigeria and India grin that obviously took place in a parallel universe and somehow we got to hear the gory stories of that match.

Though there are many variations of the story, every prevaricator seems to agree on a couple of facts about this fictional football match. Each storyteller agrees that;

1. This match ended with India scoring 99 goals and Nigeria scoring just one goal.

2. Nigerians where unable to kick the ball because the football kept turning to a lion (or something scary) to prevent them from playing the soccer ball.

3. The Indians later agreed that if Nigeria could score a goal, they would concede defeat

4. Samuel Okwaraji scored the winning goal and lost his life in the process.

5. FIFA banned India from soccer because they used black magic in that very game

With the help of common sense (not that it was absent back then), quick access to information and the internet, every right thinking Nigerian has come to realise that such a story should be filled under “Blatant Lies”.

Why Did This Story Thrive For So Long?

Most people like to pass off this story as true with the fact that no one has ever seen India in an International Football Match. Since no one actually saw India participate in most international soccer games, this gave a little credence to the story.

Another reason this lie could thrive for long was the fact that credible information was not readily available at our finger tips. It not like every Emeka, Audu and Ojo could visit Google in a matter of minutes and tell our ominous fabricators that they should stop spreading toxic lies.

And to be honest we have a tingling feeling that this lie was concocted by an elder of a community because, let’s be honest who questions the words of the elders in Nigeria. Remember, what an adult sees sitting down a child will never see even if he consults Google, Siri or Cortana.

The Element of Truth In This Story

On the 12th of August 1989, Nigeria lost Sam Okwaraji.

Sam Okwaraji was the player rumored to have lost his life in that game when in truth he died during a FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Angola in the 77th minute.

He collapsed and died of cognitive heart failure. May his soul rest in Perfect Peace. AMEN

So that is the only truthful thing about that story, the fact that a Nigerian player died during a football match. That’s it. The match was not against India, we did not lose the match and as you must have guessed, and there were no lions either.

Nairlanders, what do you think?

"You Failed, Not Me!" - Fashola Blasts Jonathan

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Tuesday, publicly disagreed with President Goodluck Jonathan over the statement that his generation has failed Nigeria, saying "You (Jonathan) failed Nigeria because my generation did not fail this country."

According to Vanguard, President Jonathan made the statement last Thursday while addressing youth at the flag-off of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP campaign held at the Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS Lagos.

Fashola however reacted at the 2015, First Quarter of the Town Hall meeting with stakeholders in the transportation sector held in Agidingbi, Ikeja, which also had in attendance Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and others.

President Jonathan and Gov Babatubde Fashola of Lagos The governor urged Jonathan to accept responsibility over his failure to address the challenges confronting the nation over the last six years of his administration rather than point accusing fingers to past leaders, "late President Musa Yar 'Adua's short tenure was better than that of this administration."

Fashola said; "He (Jonathan) said his generation has failed, he should account for himself because I refuse to join the generation the President was referring to.

According to him, "He is in his 50s, I am also in my 50s, and we appear to be, because I don't even want to join that generation because my own generation has not failed, I have done well on my job and I am proud to say so. If he has failed, let him account for himself, he should not join us".

Seven years ago, they started with Vision 2020 but later they said that they are transforming. And all these have yielded no result. And that was why they have stopped working.

On Boko Haram He lamented that the situation in the North-East region of the country was pathetic because citizens have become refugees in their father land due to the inability of the present administration to tame the Boko Haram insurgency. “And rather than the President using the recent campaign in Lagos to gain the support of the citizens the president was busy telling you they tried to kill him four years ago and we did not know. That is a serious national security issue because nobody wants our Commander in Chief dead. If anybody tries to kill him, we should have known. And if I was Commander in Chief, and the person who tries to kill me is in a South African jail, I will ask that he should be repatriated to Nigeria to come and face punishment. “

He (Jonathan) also claimed that General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) didn’t buy arms in 1985. And after Buhari left office, the Nigeria army got recognition for their role in protecting West Africa and was the guns bought 30 years ago be effective to fight today’s insurgency.” Fashola added that President Jonathan made the statements to gain the sympathy of the electorate and woo them ahead of the presidential election. He said: “In 2011, it was no shoes, now he is saying they tried to kill him, it won’t work this time. This time it is the job record, the promise that you must look at”.

Oil Production May Rise By 297,000 Barrels Per Day In 2 Yrs - NAPIMS

By Sulaimon Salau

BARRING any unforeseen circumstance, Nigeria's oil production capacity may increase by about 297,000 barrels per day (bpd) between now and 2017, going by indications from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The nation, which at present produces about 2,037 million barrels per day (bpd), is expected to get additional 40,000bpd in 2015, 57,000bpd in 2016 and 200,000bpd in 2017 (totalling 297,000bpd) from new projects from the oil multinationals like ExxonMobil and Total.

The Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), an arm of the NNPC, Jonathan Okehs, in a New Year goodwill message to members of staff, and obtained by The Guardian yesterday, said despite the dire security situation in the Chad Basin area, NAPIMS, through Frontier Exploration Services (FES), has continued to explore the frontier areas of Nigeria to increase oil and gas reserves.

He also raised optimism that the domestic gas market will record tremendous growth, as gas supply is expected to increase to over 80 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) by the first quarter of 2015.

He said: "NAPIMS has also continued to explore for new opportunities to increase our reserve base and daily production. Under the Production Sharing Contract (PSC), new green fields were discovered by some of our Partners like Newcross in OPL 283 while some others have already commenced production. Other projects such as Ofon Phase 2 are near completion with expected production of 40,000 bpd by Q4 of 2015.

"In July 2014, we commissioned the multi-billion dollar Escravos Gas-to-liquid (EGTC) plant. This created over 1,500 jobs with about $4 billion projected income to the economy. In August 2014, the multi-billion dollar Bonga North Deepwater Project dropped its first oil and has added 50,000bpd to our national crude production."

In pursuit of the Federal Government's gas to power agenda, Okehs said the corporation has maintained gas supply of three billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd) to the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) and between 750-800mmscfd to the domestic market.

"We also ensured the supply of gas to Independent Power Plants thus supporting stable power supply to Nigerians and reducing gas flares. The latest gas project, the Alakiri AG solution, being developed by SPDC joint venture is currently supplying 45mmscfd to the domestic market and will increase to over 80mmscfd by the first quarter of 2015," he added.

Cholera Kills 20 In Rivers – Commissioner

The Commissioner for Health in Rivers, Dr Sampson Parker, on Wednesday said that cholera outbreak in 11 communities in the state had claimed 20 lives.

Parker told newsmen in Port Harcourt after visiting the affected communities in Andoni Local Government Area that the outbreak was reported on Jan. 5.

“So far, 171 cases have been recorded with 20 deaths in the outbreak which was reported on January 5.

“The Local Government Area Rapid Response Team with State Emergency Response Team, have responded swiftly,” he said.

Parker also said two treatment centres had been opened in the affected communities to manage cases and advised affected people to access the centres.

“Emergency drugs and rehydration fluids have been provided for the management of cases,” he added.

Parker said the situation was pathetic and unbelievable but that the outbreak was under control as government had provided portable drinking water to the affected communities.

“What I have seen is pathetic and unbelievable. Our duty is to intervene quickly so that we do not lose more lives.

“I will say that the outbreak is under control now. All we need to do now is to treat the affected ones and to prevent further occurrences. We will continue to deploy to treat the affected ones.

“Government is also sending portable drinking water to the affected communities,” he said.

Dr Akinloye Makinde, Chief Consultant Epidemiologist, Federal Ministry of Health, said the ministry sent him to assess the situation.

“The Federal Government is donating drugs and test kits to the State Government to deploy to places in need,” he said.

Dr Sylvester Malemi, World Health Organisation Coordinator for Rivers, said it would provide technical support to Rivers to check the outbreak.

“We are here to investigate the outbreak, confirm that there is actually cholera, mobilise resources from partners, federal and state ministries of health to stop the outbreak,” he said.

He advised the people to boil their water before drinking and maintain good hygiene.
