Why We Shut 60 Petrol Stations In Akwa Ibom – DPR.




The Department of Petroleum Resources in Eket, Akwa Ibom, has said it sealed 60 petrol stations in the state between January and December last year.



DPR Controller of Operations in Eket, Asuquo Antai, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Eket on Sunday.



Antia said that the stations were sealed for selling petroleum products above the government-approved pump price of N97 per litre, under-dispensing and operating without license.



He said that the sealed stations were among the 215 visited by the department’s monitoring team during the period, and that it also sealed 18 stations in Cross River.



Antai said that the department would continue to monitor the quality and quantity of products lifted from the depots and received at the stations, to ensure that they met specifications.



“The depot owners were selling petroleum products above the approved price and the department intervened.



“We reminded them that government had subsidized the products and forced them to bring down the prices”, he said.



He, however, regretted that dealers in some areas still sold the products above the approved pump prices, but assured the consumers that the prices would soon normalise.



“They have started selling at depot prices. I expect that at the end of this week, the prices at the retail outlets will normalize”, he said.



The operations controller advised petroleum marketers in the state to shun unwholesome practices in their dealings to avoid the wrath of the department.



Antai restated the DPR’s commitment to monitoring petrol stations to ensure compliance with Federal Government’s directives on sale of the products.



“It is a continuous thing; we will keep going round and ensure that the prices of the products are stable. We will also ensure that the products are dispensed appropriately”, Antai said. (NAN)

Through asign interpreter, Mrs. Helen Famuwagun the visibly elated bride said she lives in Owo and has been looking for a nice and responsible man, which she has now found n her heartthrob, Kunle.



“We met in 2013 and courted for over one year. I know his parents and they too know me and my parents very well,” Omolola announced.”



Asked if the suitors took some time coming, she replied that

“many suitors were coming, but I decided to choose Kunle, for his understanding and caring nature.



Kunle is a man after my heart,” she gesticulated to her interpreter, who in turn explained to the reporters.



The couple who both attend GOFAMINT Church said they are happy to have scaled all hurdles to eventually solemnise their relationship.



Through their interpreter, Kunle said he does not want any woman in his life, except his brand new wife, Omolola.



The Bridegroom

Kunle disclosed that he met his heartthrob at a friend’s place on May 10, 2013 and immediately took interest in her.



His words,

“I liked her immediately I saw her.”



Asked if he would someday take another wife, he shook his head, gesticulating to the interpreter that he would never consider taking a second or third wife.



He however declared that he would like to have many children, depending on God’s wish.

My name is Helen Famuwagun (Mrs.), I am one of their teachers in GOFANMINT, what I’ve noticed is that most of them don’t marry normal persons but their likes. This is because they understand each other and are able to interact through sign language. In the church, we teach them that they should not ‘see’ each other before getting married. And this they obeyed because we monitor them very well. We also tell them that their bed must not be defiled, imparting in them the way of God. As a preacher and pastor, I preach to them that it is a sin to make love out of wedlock. Of course we relate with them through sign language, because of their nature and they are well receptive.



Famuwagun also revealed that by nature, people with such disabilities are special people and are very jealous. This she said is why they often married their likes, with whom they share good understanding, and compatibility. She said that such understanding is critical, because they could be very fatal when they get angry.



She also disclosed that this was not the first time such marriage will be taking place.



Boundless joy

The visually impaired sang danced and were all happy. One of them Temitope Ariyo, who is the leader of the School Band, said “we are happy to play for our colleague. Although we cannot see them, they see us. Today is another happy day for the couple “.



Olorunfemi Seun, and Tosin Oladapo, two back-up singers who are also visually impaired also expressed their joy on the occasion.

Chief Anthony Adeyeye Onipede and his wife,Taiye are Omolola parents.



According to them, their daughter was not born deaf and dumb, but suddenly observed that she could not talk or hear when she was a toddler.



“Omolola was born as a twin, but hertwin sisterdied at infancy.



She was still crawling when we discovered that she could not talk or hear,” the parents chorused.



Onipede said

“I am her father. I did not immediately know that she could not talk or hear. I was in Onitsha then as a soldier .It was my late father who first noticed the problem.



We went to places; hospitals and even churches, thinking it was a spiritual attack, but no progress.”



“I made efforts to take her to school.



She went to deaf and dumb school in Akure; she also went to Technical College, Owo, where she learnt Painting and decorating”

Asked whether her daughter was forced to marry a challenged person like herself, Mrs. Onipede said



“No, it was Omolola who said she would marry Kunle. They both went to the same school, and I think they would understand each other better. I am happy for their coming together and I am told their children will be normal when they begin to have children.”

The parents of the Bridegroom exhibited great joy throughout the occasion. When interviewed, Kunle’s father, Rufus Oluwadare, who is a Shepherd at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Akure said



“my son was not bornlike this. I am the happiest man today for my son to be getting married. I have done two weddings for my two childrenthis yearbut this is the most interesting and most unforgettable among them all. Yes, they have challenges but see how God has compensated them with this crown?



What I know is that if a bad person blocks their way God has a way of compensating them.”

Presidency Slams APC Over ‘Malicious’ Claim Of Planned Handover To The Military.




The Presidency has described as mischievous, claims by the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the government had concluded plans to hand over to the Military rather than its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.



“Our attention has been drawn to a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mallam Garba Shehu, where he alleged that an official of the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President posted some comments on the social media suggesting that ‘government will rather hand over power to the military rather than to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the event that the APC candidate wins the elections,'” a statement, yesterday, by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, the Presidency said.



“We categorically deny that this statement was ever made by anyone in this office. The APC claim is absolutely false, mischievous and malicious.



“The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs personally handles his Twitter, @doyinokupe and other social media platforms and continues to use such as a legitimate medium of advancing the cause of democratic good governance and institutional integrity which President Goodluck Jonathan represents.



“Dr. Okupe has never and will never associate himself with thoughts or actions which run contrary to the tenets of democracy, rule of law and the right of Nigerians to freely elect those who govern them.



“We urge the APC to concentrate on clearing the name of its presidential candidate from the mess of not having prerequisite academic certificate and incapacity to govern Nigeria rather than seek a cheap diversion from a phantom post by some persons on the social media,” the statement read.


Buhari Says He Is Hale And Hearty, Asks PDP To Stop Playing Politics With His Health.




The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, dismissed allegations about his health and education, as regards his presidential ambition, saying such allegations are being used by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to deviate from the core campaign issues of corruption and incompetent leadership.



Reacting to speculations in the media over the weekend that the former head of state was about to travel abroad on account of his alleged ill-health, Buhari described the medical report widely circulated online as forged.



More so, the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital which reportedly issued the report has disclaimed it as a forgery.



“I was at Nasarawa and Benue states (Saturday). Today I am going to be in two states.



The day after tomorrow in two more states. I am doing two states per day. How they got the impression that I was sick I do not know although I got cold and that did not stop me from going through my schedule.



“I don’t know of this desperation. The issue we are telling Nigerians is that of corruption in this country for the last 16 years PDP has literally destroyed this country. This is the issue and what has my health got to do with that one?



“Document have been put in the papers, on twitter that I am sick but the ABU said they are forged documents. This desperation is beyond my understanding,” Buhari said.



It was revealed to Vanguard by campaign officials that the proposed trip by Buhari, which was rumoured to be because of his health, was actually upon a request by the United States Department of State, which wanted to hear his views. The trip scheduled towards ending of January by the US Department of State had not even been agreed to by the Buhari Campaign team, the source explained.



“Yes, Buhari was invited by the State Department for an interaction but he has not been able to fix a date for it because of the hectic campaign schedule and it is our view that he may not have the time for the trip,” the campaign official said.



Buhari also expressed surprise that the issue of certification had become a focal point. He wondered where his accusers were when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cleared him to contest the previous elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011.



“I have contested three times under the same rules set by the INEC. I was allowed to contest all these elections because my certificate was in order and there were individuals that wrote to the United States War College and the college answered them and it was published by some of your papers.



So really this desperation of misinformation that is being passed around will do nobody any good because our minds are being taken away from the serious issues of corruption and incompetence by the PDP,” he said.

Brave Victim Kills Bank Robber Who Tried To Rob Him Of N900,000 In Oyo.




AN attempt by a two-man robbery gang to dispossess a bank customer of N900,000 ended tragically for one of them as he was crushed by their victim’s vehicle.



Crime Reports learnt that one Alhaji (name withheld) recently went to a bank at Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State to withdraw the cash, after which he drove out of the bank premises in his Nissan Pathfinder Sport Utility Vehicle.



Unknown to him, he had been sighted by the two armed robbers who had mounted surveillance around the bank, in search of victims.



It was further gathered that the two armed gang members immediately followed the Alhaji on their operational motorcycle.



On getting to Alakia area of the city, it was reliably gathered, the hoodlums blocked the Pathfinder with their motorcycle, drew a gun and shot at their victim’s leg, demanding for the money he just withdrew from the bank.



Shocked by the unexpected confrontation, Alhaji was reported to have fumbled to retrieve the money from where he kept it, but the armed robbers who felt he was deliberately using delay tactics to outwit them shot him the second time.



This was said to have discomfited the man who engaged the reverse gear and pressed hard on the throttle. In the process, one of the armed robbers was hit and he died instantly.



Seeing that his partner in crime had been brought down, the other robber was reported to have fled.



The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Kolawole Shodipo, told Crime Reports that an English Beretta pistol with four rounds of 0.9mm ammunition, among other items, was recovered from the dead armed robber.

Nigeria Immigration Seizes 452 PVCs, ID Cards From Niger Republic Nationals

452 Permanent Voter Cards have been intercepted around the border area with the Republic of Niger, according to the Nigeria Immigration Service.



The State Comptroller of Immigration Service, Mr Yunusa Aliyu, told newsmen that 66 PVCs, 33 temporary voter cards, 271 old and 69 new national identity cards were among the seized documents.



He revealed that the documents were seized by officers attached to Tureta checkpoint on the Sokoto-Gusau road.



“The suspected car snatchers were stopped for a routine search by the officers but they refused to stop. They fled.



“The officers pursued them and the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled, although no suspect was arrested,” he explained.



He further said, “It is extremely difficult to differentiate between the Hausa from northern Nigeria and those from the neighbouring Niger Republic,” adding that this could be the reason why the PVCs, which were supposed to be issued to bonafide Nigerians were allegedly given to non-Nigerians.



Asides the PVCs, other items recovered included a local government identification card and 12 birth certificates.

Jonathan Lacks Capacity To Secure Nigeria, Fight Corruption - Festus Keyamo

Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has said President Goodluck Jonathan lacks the capacity to secure Nigeria and fight corruption.



In a statement he issued yesterday, Keyamo called on the elites not to sit on the fence and urged them to explain to the masses the many failings of Jonathan.



He said: “My real worry is that many Nigerians who are the elites can see through some of these outright falsehoods but have decided to sit on fence and keep an embarrassing silence.



“They forget that millions of ordinary Nigerians who are confused and hoodwinked by these falsehoods and who do not have access to facts depend on their voices and guidance to make their choices.”



According to him, it would be wrong for Nigerians to re-elect Jonathan as

president.



He accused the preisdent of failing in the areas of security, economy and infrastructure development, critical sectors that are fundamental to the continued survival and growth of any society.



He said the resort to ethnic and religious sentiments by the president and his campaigners would not help his cause.



Keyamo faulted Jonathan’s claim to be fighting corruption, insecurity and to have improved the economy.



He argued that the president’s claims could not be supported by any facts as he (Jonathan) was only paying lip service to corruption while insecurity heightened and economy going from bad to worse.



Keyamo, who is prosecuting the case of money laundering against former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, wondered why Jonathan was comfortable among people whose integrity were under question.



He argued that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari, was a ready and better alternative to Jonathan.



He said: “We have a president who has no single appetite to fight corruption – yes, none. Imagine a campaign that is dominated by the theme of corruption, yet the president has decided to appoint a person facing trial for money-laundering as his Director of Media and Publicity.



“If nobody would say it, I will say it because I am the one prosecuting the fellow in court and the case has been adjourned to February 23 and 24 for trial.



“Part of the lies told is that the fellow has been freed whereas some of the counts in the charge were just struck out and the court held that he has a case to answer on some other counts.



“Yet nobody is asking the president these hard questions. Before Jonathan’s administration, Boko Haram was nothing but a rag-tag group of extremists living in enclaves like Sambisa, while our proud military boys patrolled the towns. Now, under Jonathan, the reverse is the case.



“One obvious flaw is that our president has lost control of the military and the top hierarchy of the military is merely feeding fat on this unfortunate situation and the president seems to be totally helpless in the face of this.



“The president is already sounding like a broken record. He says he has made the rails to function again. He mentioned this so much that you imagine that he was primarily elected to revive a few train lines. It sounds very funny when you hear such things, whereas the primary duty of government is the protection of lives and properties.



“If that primary duty fails, then the government has failed. It is like an undergraduate hoping to be promoted to the next level by barely scraping through the ‘electives’ and failing the core courses. It will never happen. So, is the president providing train coaches to be transporting the dead bodies from the North to the South? Are the trains to be occupied by living human beings or dead human beings?



“All the personal attacks on the person of Buhari in the last few weeks have only convinced me that he is the best available option at this time. Anyone on the weaker side in any argument always resorts to personal abuses and attacks. Have you noticed that on corruption, the only accusation against Buhari is that, he was too high-handed in fighting corruption in the past? She's Pregnant For Him Even When He Told Her He's Not Ready

We've been together for more than 3 years, I love her so much. A Love Story Of A Unilag Babe And A Bus Conductor

Something interesting happened on my way to Oshodi this

morning.

At the park this rough mean-looking conductor also known

as “agbero” in Yoruba was screaming for passengers, his

vernacular oscillating between Yoruba and pidgin English.

“Oshod! Oshod!” He shouted angrily as I along with some

other passengers scuttled for seats.

caution and decorum to the wind but waited patiently until

the bus was almost filled. Then she pleaded to sit by the

agbero until somebody came down then she would pay for a

proper seat. The agbero didn’t even look at her pretty face,

he hissed and shouted to the driver to move that why didn’t

she rush when others were rushing.

The girl started pleading in Yoruba and clean ‘oyinbo’

english; “please, ejó, help me out sir, I know you are a good

man, never mind all this shout you have been shouting

(people burst into laughter). Let me sit by your side please”.

Finally with much squeezing of face the agbero relented and

she sat beside him. It was a tight squeeze but she didn’t

complain but rather started praising the agbero.

He in turn started teasing her, speaking (and sometimes

spitting by mistake) into her face but the girl never looked

away, she never let the smile leave her face. He asked her

where she worked and she replied that she was a student in

the University of Lagos (UNILAG) studying accounting.

He teased her in Yoruba about her boyfriend and car (maybe

asking why her boyfriend didn’t drop her at her destination…

she laughed it off and continued to gist with the guy in

Yoruba. When she reached her junction the agbero alighted

the bus for her to come down. She did and paid her transport

fare, then the agbero told her to give him a peck on the cheek

for being so ‘gentlemanly’.

At this point some of us became indignant, haba! He had

been teasing her since, he should let her go. Another

argument almost ensued between the agbero and the

passengers although it was not as if the agbero was really

serious, he told her to go. Then it happened! She jumped

forward and gave him a peck on the cheek! We all shouted,

the agbero was quiet out of surprise. She then waved bye

and ran down to her street.

The driver and other people started to hail the agbero, see

hailing! The guy was just forming boss, saying he knew he

was irresistible etc and others were yabbing (taunting) him,

some were yabbing the girl and we moved on and suddenly

the bus was quiet, show over. Then the agbero put his head

down and became uncharacteristically quiet. The driver soon

asked the guy why he wasn’t calling out bus-stop abi the girl

don do am jazz (cast a spell on him).

his voice became emotional and believe it or not HE

STARTED CRYING. Others were now consoling him in

Yoruba. When I asked what the problem was, the lady beside

me explained that the agbero said he just realised he would

never be able to get a girl like that in his life because he’s an

uneducated bus conductor and she was going to be a

graduate.

He was weeping because he knew no girl of her class might

ever do to him what that girl just did, to touch a dirty person

like himself; that the girl is nice and well brought-up and if

he had money he would have chased after her. So the

passengers were consoling him in Yoruba that he would go

higher in life and be able to marry a girl like that. He should

not cry because it was not the end of the road for him.

That really touched me. For a moment in that agbero’s life,

his facade of a street thug fell away and he was a vulnerable

emotional aspiring young man, just like everybody else.

Thugs kill Lotto Agent Over Missing N500 (Photo)





The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman, Sade Onafowopo, for her alleged role in the death of a lotto agent, Oluwatosin Efuneye,



PUNCH Metro learnt that Efuneye was allegedly beaten to death in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos by thugs who were carrying out Onafowopo’s order to torture the lotto agent.



Eyewitnesses said Onafowopo, who was Efuneye’s boss, ordered the punishment because the deceased reportedly deducted N500 from the money paid by a customer.



Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred last Thursday, January 15, on Makinde Street, Ojuelegba, where Onafowopo, popularly called Shandy, lived and had her lotto shop.



Our correspondent learnt that 31-year-old Efuneye, who hailed from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, collapsed during the beating, and was afterward rushed to a private hospital in the area where he was confirmed dead.



The matter was reported at the Area C Police Command, Surulere.



When our correspondent visited Efuneye’s apartment on Olaniyi Street, Somolu, on Saturday, the deceased’s father, Pa Efuneye, said his son still called him on the phone on Thursday morning that he was heading for his boss’ (Onafowopo) place to remit the lotto proceeds.



He said, “Tosin (Efuneye) was doing the lotto business at Esan Ogboogun Street, Somolu. But he would normally go to Ojuelegba every morning to remit the previous day’s proceeds to his boss, Shandy. He stayed in this house with his younger brother. He was not married.



“What happened on last Thursday was shocking. I learnt that when he got to Shandy’s place, the woman said a customer came to complain that Tosin had deducted N500 from the N1,000 which the customer used to play the lotto. The customer then claimed he had won N240,000, and demanded his winning.



“Shandy did not wait for any explanation from Tosin. She arranged for thugs on her street to torture him. They stripped him to his underwear, and beat him up. Shandy did not report to the lotto’s head office in Lagos State. She did not report to the family or to the police.



“She and the thugs beat up Tosin until he collapsed. They rushed him to a private hospital, but he was already dead. When I learnt about the matter, I called Shandy on the phone, she refused to pick my calls.”



Our correspondent learnt that Onafowopo, a principal lotto agent, has shops with clerks in the Ojuelegba and Somolu areas.



It was also gathered that Efuneye, who was to get married this year, had worked with Onafowopo since early 2014.



When PUNCH Metro got to Makinde Street, our correspondent observed that Onafowopo’s shop and residence were locked.



Our correspondent gathered that Efuneye’s relatives had gone to the lotto’s head office at Surulere to file a complaint of their son’s death.



The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.



He said Onafowopo was being interrogated to identify other miscreants involved in the incident.



He said, “The suspect is in our custody, and she is helping the police with information to arrest other suspected killers of the deceased.”


Rivers: Why We Refused PDP Use Of Stadium For Presidential Rally

The Rivers State Government has said it refused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) use of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Igwuruta-Ali, for its presidential campaign rally because the facility was unsafe as work was ongoing at the site.



In a statement issued by the state Commissioner of Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, the government said it was not impressed by the threat of the PDP that it would force its way into the stadium if the government did not grant its request to use the facility.



“At a different time and under different circumstances the Rivers State Government would have ignored the PDP’s ranting but with the party’s penchant for violence and its recent bombings of people and property all over the state, it is pertinent that the Rivers State Government raises this alert and sounds a note of warning to the PDP that the Rivers State Government will not trifle with its responsibility to guarantee the safety of lives and property irrespective of whom is affected.”



According to Semenitari, “The matter of the Adokiye Amiesimaka sports complex is a simple one. The complex is still under construction. As a work site, it is an unsafe environment for use at this time.



“The PDP makes reference to the fact that the APC had held its rally at the same venue. What they failed to mention is that the contractor was moved out of site during the time the APC rally held and remobilised to site right after that rally.



“With less than five months to go to the end of its tenure, the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration is working on ensuring the completion of all its projects before the handover date of May 29th. With that being the case, the River State Government cannot move its contractors out of site at this time.”



She said the state government had provided the PDP an alternative venue for their rally and wondered why the party was bent on the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium.



“Unlike the PDP that has consistently refused the APC the use of stadia and other facilities in Abuja and other states where it is in control, the Rivers State Government has magnanimously offered the PDP the use of the Liberation Stadium Elekahia, which is also a State facility,” she said.



She stated, “The resolve of the PDP to unlawfully break into the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium is therefore a clear determination to create chaos, cause breakdown of law and order and perhaps fulfil the threat issued by some of its members that they will burn down the complex.



“We ask President Jonathan, who is the leader of the PDP, and the Inspector General of Police to rein in their mad dogs and call their people to order.”
