Babangida Fumes At "Anti-Military" Political Broadcast

Former President Ibrahim Babangida has flayed what he Wednesday described as an attempt to ridicule the military institution and some of its sterling lights in the name of politics.

Taking note of a television documentary aired on Tuesday night on a private television network to project President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the presidential election, Babangida lamented that the president’s backers at the same time poured calumny on some of the country’s former military rulers.

Babangida took strong objections to what he said were the negative imputations put on the integrity and services to the nation by Generals Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, himself; Ibrahim Babangida, late Sani Abacha, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and T.Y Danjuma.

Noting that the sponsors of the documentary which he described as a hate campaign were either intellectually delinquent or suffering from memory loss; or a combination of both, Babangida referred them to his leading role in the formation of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

He said:

“For record purposes, and without sounding immodest, the idea of a PDP that has now become the “largest party in Africa” started in my home, here in Minna. With the support of my fellow colleagues, we prepared the way for this democratic process that has now led us to where we are presently. We built the democratic infrastructure and architecture. Those who are parading themselves as democrats today, all participated in military governments. As a deliberate principle of remaining unsung, or blowing my own trumpet, I have elected over the years to maintain dignified silence on so many issues concerning Nigeria while I cultivate my access to each sitting President to pass across my advice in whatever form.

“It is on record and this is incontrovertible that the government I ran paraded some of the best brains this country can be proud of. I still remain eternally grateful to those wonderful brains who participated in our government to fashion a new roadmap for re-engineering the country. Some of our policies have remained unsurpassed till date and most of what the country enjoys today was a creation of the Military.

From primary healthcare to good roads, DFRRI, Better Life for Rural Women, housing, river basin authorities, MAMSER, new airports, agricultural development and other economic infrastructure, to mention but a few, were platforms where our interventions were felt. We achieved that much with very slim resources. If we had the several billions of dollars that are flying around today, we would have turned Nigeria to the Dubai of Africa.

“The military is an institution that is so dear to my heart. It is an institution that nurtured my growing up and my achievements in life. I am not only sold to the military institution and by extension the Nigerian state, I am betrothed to it. As a profession, retirees are bound to participate in politics and democracy as an all-inclusive process, same way that Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Nurses, and Civil Servants get involved in it.

It is the reason why I ventured into politics in 2003 before I quit in 2010. It is the same reason why General Obasanjo participated and got elected; and now General Buhari. It is therefore very curious that promoters of President Goodluck Jonathan’s aspiration would attempt to demonize and stigmatize former military leaders and cast aspersions on them in order to malign their reputation. This is very unfair.

“Fact is; the military fought a civil war to keep this country together. What I suffer today is a consequence of the injuries I sustained during the Nigeria Civil War. I am not sure there is any patriotism that is more than that. Some of us were prepared to die for the country. The military is presently combating the dreaded Boko Haram sect to restore Nigeria’s territorial integrity. What law under a democracy forbids retired military personnel from participating in politics and presenting themselves for election? Over 90 percent of American Presidents have military background.

Leadership training is better grounded in the military than any other profession. And the military parades some of the best brains in any country, including Nigeria. In fact, some of my military students that I tutored have Doctorate Degrees. It is therefore callous, wicked, out-of-sync, cynical and a show of crass ignorance for anyone to undermine the military institution by embarking on mudslinging campaigns against former presidents and leaders of military background.

“While those campaigners are pointing their accusing fingers at us, they forget to recall that the present Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization is actually a retired Military Officer. It is this form of demonization and stigmatization that often compels us to exhibit espirit de corps amongst ourselves in support of our military institution and colleagues when the stakes are high. As disciplined military officers, we are patriotic Nigerians and must be treated with utmost respect and decorum.

Ozekhome Warns Buhari Supporters Against Celebrating Prematurely

As court on Wednesday postponed judgment on a legal challenge disputing the eligibility of opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari to stand in this weekend’s general election because he cannot produce his secondary school leaving certificate.

Mike Ozekhome has warned Buhari supporters against celebrating prematurely as the High Court could overturn Saturday’s result if it finds Buhari lacked the requisite qualification.

Buhari’s All Progressives Congress claim the petition is part of a ruling party plot to disqualify its 72-year-old candidate days before Saturday’s vote.

“The suit has been adjourned to the 22nd and 23rd of April, 2015,” judge Ademola Adeniyi told the Federal High Court in the capital, Abuja.

The petition filed by a private citizen, Chukwunweike Okafor, and argued by Mike Ozekhome, one of Nigeria’s most prominent lawyers with close ties to the ruling party, claimed that Buhari lacked the required academic credentials to stand for president.

It also argued that he lied under oath to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) when he swore that the military was in possession of his academic papers.

Buhari, a former army general, led Nigeria as a military ruler for 20 months beginning in December 1983 and has stood for the presidency three times previously.

Buhari’s lawyer, Akin Olujinmi, said he was “absolutely happy” with the court decision as it removed the air of uncertainty and “pressure” on the INEC with the election just three days away.

Ozekhome warned Buhari supporters against celebrating prematurely as the High Court could overturn Saturday’s result if it finds Buhari lacked the requisite qualifications.

“In the event, for example, Buhari wins the election, all it simply means is that, when eventually we finish this case and the court found that he was not qualified… the court will simply dethrone him,” Ozekhome told reporters.

According to Nigerian law, presidential candidates must have completed secondary school.

The whereabouts of Buhari’s secondary school certificate was not raised during his three previous presidential campaigns in 2003, 2007 and 2011.

But the emergence of the question this year, with Buhari seen as having his best-ever shot at winning the polls, raised eyebrows in opposition camps.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has controlled the presidency since military rule ended in 1999.

Nigeria Immigration Recruitment: Applicants To Undergo CBT To Avoid Another Stampede

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said Computer-Based Test (CBT) would be used to conduct examinations for applicants of the 2015 recruitment into the service.

Mr. Chukwuemeka Obua, the Public Relations Officer of the service, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Obua said this was to prevent a reoccurrence of the 2014 recruitment where a stampede was recorded at various centres across the country due to large crowd of applicants.

He said the CBT would also be used to conduct the examination in order to test the computer literacy level of applicants.

He said this was a basic requirement for employment into the service.

“ This is the process that will be adopted for the recruitment in order to prevent the reoccurrence of the past incident. Four or five computer centres will be designated in each state of the federation.

“ Applicants will be divided according to these centres and they will be communicated online individually the date they are required to sit for the examination and the location in order to prevent over-crowding in centres and cases of non-applicants in attendance,” he said.

The spokesman said the CBT was a global trend accepted and used worldwide to conduct examinations.

He said the device was chosen to prevent the rigours associated with paper-based examinations.

He said that applicants would not be required to bring any writing materials; rather, they would only need their password which was the registration number to log into the computer, answer the test and submit online.

Obua said after the test, successful applicants would be contacted individually and asked to report to designated immigration offices across the country where they would be further examined.

“ At this stage, we will do the physical examination to check the height, presence of any physical disabilities and general state of health of applicants to ensure that they are fit to carry out their duties when employed.

“ Documents of applicants will also be reviewed during the examination after which successful candidates will be contacted online informing them of their acceptance into the service,” he said.

NAN reports that applications for recruitment into the NIS which commenced on Feb. 9 closed on March 22.

A married female teacher, Erica Lynne Mesa, 28, has been sentenced to a 22-year stretch in prison after she was convicted for having sex with four of her students in a bizarre foursome. Yoruba leaders got blood money from Jonathan - Fashola

Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola says money collected by any Yoruba leader from President Jonathan during his recent campaign trip to the South West is blood money.

According to PM News, Governor Fashola said this at the APC rally in Shomolu, yesterday March 24

"The Yoruba's need to have a rethink. Some Yoruba leaders have betrayed us the Yorubas because of money. This election is for freedom. And this was how it happened in the past which prompted the late Hubert Ogunde to sing one of his songs titled ‘Yoruba rethink,’. The money is blood money. And posterity will judge them for that action,” he said.

Jega Announces Procedures For Voting, Release Of Results

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Tuesday released the processes and procedures for the elections as well as the processes of releasing the results during the polls by the presiding officers.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ summit with political parties, Jega informed those present that accreditation of voters would take place from 8a.m. till the last person to join the queue at 1p.m. is accredited, while voting would commence at 1.30p.m. and would end when the last person on the queue has voted.

The INEC chairman further said only persons with the permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) would be accredited, stating that the card readers would be used during the accreditation process.

He said each political party is entitled to an agent at the polling station and that the agent must be properly accredited in accordance with the regulations and guidelines.

According to Jega, “On March 28, three ballot boxes will be used in each of the polling/voting points. Ballot boxes with red cover is for putting a thumb printing ballot paper by a voter for the presidential election, ballot box with a black cover is putting thumb printing ballot paper by a voter for the senatorial election and the green ballot box is for putting thumb printed ballot paper by a voter for the House of Representatives.

“Each ballot paper has corresponding colour stripes to assist voters in putting the right ballot paper in the right ballot box. For each polling /voting point, there is a designated official called overseer, whose primary job is to ensure that voters put the right ballot paper into the right ballot box. Political parties need to factor this into their campaigns to minimise putting the ballot paper into the wrong ballot box.”

As a result of this, he said there shall be two sorting of voting at the polling units, explaining that it was meant to ensure that any wrongly placed ballot papers re removed and put back into the right ballot boxes and the second is meant to determine the votes cast by voters for a political party/candidate.

According to the INEC chairman, “At the end of the sorting and counting of the ballot papers, the results are to be announced to the rearing of all and a result poster is to be completed and pasted at the polling units. Copies of the result sheets are to be given a accredited party agents who are present while the original is to be conveyed to the ward level coalition centre by the presiding officer accompanied by the security agents and the party agents.

“At the ward level collation centre, if there are complaints and/or evidence of alteration of accreditation figures on the result sheets, the information on accreditation saved on the card readers used would be used by the collation officer to decide on the case.”

Jega further explained that hard copies of result sheets from the polling units would be scanned, converted to PDF format and put in a database, which be made accessible for viewing an download via the INEC website. This, he said, is to ensure the accuracy of the collated results.

He also used the occasion to assure Nigerians of a credible, fair and transparent election at all level.

I am First Lady Because I am Educated : Patience Jonathan

Mrs Jonathan has said that she was chosen as Nigeria’s First lady because she’s educated. She also accused the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari of failing to carry women along when he was Head of State.

The First Lady stated this during a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akure, Ondo State.

“Majority of the people of Ondo are educated and I believe you know the importance of education because without education there is no future,” Mrs Jonathan said.

“Our children are our hope and that’s why Jonathan said the children should be made to be the leaders of today. We should thank God for the administration of Goodluck and the PDP,” she added.

“If somebody is talking and you are not educated, can you be there? If Hilary Clinton is talking and you are not educated, can you be there? As Mimiko (governor of Ondo) is there, without education can he be there? As I am standing before you, if I am not educated, will they choose me? That is why the PDP government takes education very seriously,” the First Lady said.

Ladies: When Did We Become So Tolerant Of The 'Side Chick'?

Over the years, in what is a total paradigm shift from the values a lot of our mothers had (well at least some), the "other woman" has now become tolerable. I am not sure when along the way it happened, and no one remembered to send me a memo but it appears to now be the norm.

I always have some nagging urge to blatantly say "No babe, it is downright unacceptable", when my friends broach me on this subject, but you end up being the friend who likes to break up homes because she's not married yet. People say if I was in those shoes I would feel differently.

Well Maybe.

However, no matter how much shame I would feel, I knew myself before I got married, my values remain my values, knowing my self-worth is what shapes every corner of my life and that is the core of me. To change now or later would be to deny who I have been for 26 years. While I am never an advocate for divorce, I have realized people do not change overnight.

A year back, my friend's boyfriend told her he was confused who to pick between her and two other girlfriends. Well she fought for "her man". Trouble is today they are married, and he's still seeing one of the other girls, who he has now rented an apartment for in Nigeria, and he's here half the year.

I've realised, the people who complain about there husbands or fiance throwing some other woman in their face mostly had an inkling they were cheats while they were dating. They were the ones who fought of five other girls to get their man. But the question is, if when you were dating there were five of you, why do you think today he would be satisfied with one. I have no doubt in my mind, everyone has an idea of things their partners are capable of in their subconscious, the trouble is a lot of us convince ourselves to believe some other truth that better suits our wants.

My mama has taught me, life is too short to jump into something you can't tolerate all your life, the sole reason for sharing your life with someone and giving up your freedom should be because they make you happier than anyone else in the world. Do not compromise your values or one day you would wish you had not.

But then, on the flip side, if you like smelling some other girls perfume on your man and having your kids run into daddy and "Aunty Bintan, the side chick" at the hotel near their school then go right ahead.

She's 5ft Tall And Her Fiance Is Shorter. Will Their Height Affect Their Children?

Please I need advice from matured people.

There's this guy that am dating, he's so caring, lovely and humble. He is planning to marry me but he is short, though I have not gathered the courage to tell him my fears. Am average 5ft, but am taller than him. So am afraid that our kids will be short.

Please my fellow NL, I need your advice, I don't want to make mistakes in marriage. Though I have been praying to God for the right man.

Jay Z and Beyonce caught fighting in public?

Story according to urban website - Crazy Days and Nights.

For the first time I can remember, the two lost their cool in public where at least four other diners and a couple of waiters in a private room witnessed them having a blowout fight. Granted this intel only comes from two people who were in the room but once tabloids and wallets start digging perhaps they can get the waiters to spill.

The two were at dinner and had just had appetizers brought to the table.

A bodyguard was in one corner of the room seated at a table looking around but mostly looking at his phone. Beyonce started speaking louder and louder and Jay tried to get her to be quiet while looking around. The bodyguard started watching the scene and stopped looking at his phone but did not get up.

Things settled down when Jay whispered in Bayonce’s ear. About ten minutes later Beyonce said something else and whatever Jay said didn’t seem to work. He shrugged his shoulders and Beyonce started pointing at him and leaned over the table and got closer to his face and started talking louder.

He then said one last thing, pushed back her chair and threw her napkin on the table before getting up and headed towards the door. She motioned for the bodyguard to follow her and walked out the door to the room to the main part of the restaurant. By the time she got to the door, Jay had thrown literally a stack of money on the table and was chasing after her.

Nigerian Military Arrests Aljazeera Journalists

The Nigerian military on Wednesday arrested two journalists working for news television, Aljazeera, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The military accused the journalists, Ahmed Idris and Mustafa Andy, of loitering in areas were combat operations were still ongoing.

The Defence Headquarters, in a statement, said the journalists were moving around “restricted areas” in Yobe and Borno States without protection, accreditation or clearance.

The military said the journalists were monitored by intelligence operatives and were finally restrained to their hotel rooms in Maiduguri following increased suspicion that their activities were focused on interfering with ongoing military operations in those areas.

“The motive, activities and some materials in possession of these individuals are now being investigated,” the military said.

The Nigerian military had, last year, warned reporters against unauthorized movements in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States where it fights extremist sect, Boko Haram.

The defence headquarters said Wednesday until reversed, the restriction still stands while appropriate arrangements will be made to assist duly cleared journalists to report on activities in the area under military operation “within the limits of adequate safety, security and necessary procedures”.

See The Girl Who Killed Her Lover That Picked Her From Hotel, Over N200

I was hypnotized, says lady who killed lover over N200

Gift Wahab, the 20-year-old lady, who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death in Ajegunle area of Lagos last Thursday, said she was hypnotized by a force she could not resist.

The suspect, who said she was yet to come to terms with the reality of her boyfriend’s death, said the argument that resulted in the fight, which led to her boyfriend’s death, was over N200.

She said: “He usually gave me N200 as feeding money. On that day, as we were returning from where we went to drink, I became hungry and complained to him.

“He got angry and asked why I should complain of hunger after he had spent the only money he had on drinks. An argument ensued, during which he slapped me in the public.

“I got angry and held on to his shirt. He kept beating me and in the process, he inflicted injury on my nose.

“It was when I saw blood gushing from my nose that I ran inside the room and brought out a knife. He dared me to stab him and I stabbed him in the neck, not knowing he would die.

‘He removed me

from the streets’

In an emotional-laden tone, she stated that she owed her boyfriend, Ebi Amadu, a lot, revealing that he removed her from the streets, after they met in 2012.

She said: “We met in a hotel in Ojo Road and since then, I have been living with him and members of his family, comprising his mother and five siblings in a one-room apartment at 10 Ligali Street, Off Ojo Road.

“Along the line I got pregnant but I lost the pregnancy late last year.

“Though he was not rich, we were managing. He usually gave me N200 for feeding each day. I never meant to kill him. It was a mistake.

“In fact, I was under a spell. I was hypnotized. I have never killed anyone in my life. Why will it be my boyfriend?“

Vanguard gathered that when the late Amadu was stabbed, he attempted to remove the knife and in the process, fell into a drain.

A mob reportedly attempted to lynch Gift, but for the arrival of policemen from Layeni Division.

The mob, Gift said, “descen-ded on me, saying they would kill me the same way I killed Ebi. I passed out when one of them landed a blow on my nose, which was still bleeding.

“The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in the Police Station.

“I sincerely beg for forgiveness from my late boyfriend’s family. I know this will not bring their son back. But please let them forgive me.”

The suspect, according to the Police, would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

The women were said to have been protesting being shut out of the Women Development Center which they had earlier booked before President Jonathan's visit. The women barricaded the entrance into the State Secretariat of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, ahead of the visit of President Jonathan to the place, and were teargassed after they refused the advice of the security agencies to leave the premises before the president arrived.
