Why I Directed PDP Ward Leader To Tear My Membership Card - Obasanjo

As criticisms and commendations continue to trail his dramatic exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained how he arrived at the decision to dump the party to which he belonged for 16 years.

The former president had Monday announced his resignation as a member of the party on whose platform he ruled the country between 1999 and 2007.

Mr. Obasanjo renounced his membership of the PDP when some leaders of the party led by Surajudeen Oladunjoye, the chairman of the ward around his former residence in Ita Eko, visited him at his Presidential Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta home.

The former president directed Mr. Oladunjoye to tear his membership card at a press conference organised during the visit.

About two hours later, the PDP leadership in Ogun State announced the expulsion of the former president from the party.

However, in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday, Mr. Obasanjo explained that the PDP members visited him to express their genuine concern about his refusal to be active in the party.

“They were concerned that I had only one leg in the party, and worried that since I’m their leader in the ward, they need to hear from me,” the former President said.

According to him, when the party members arrived his residence, they were singing a song in Yoruba language –

“Nigeria yi ti gbobgo wa ni, Ko ma gbodo ba je. Eje ka sowopo kajo gbega (Meaning – Nigeria belongs to all of us, we must not allow it to be destroyed and we must join hands to make it great).

Mr. Obasanjo said when they settled down he sought to know why they came and that it was at that point that Mr. Oladunjoye told him that since he (Obasanjo) as their leader became angry with the PDP and remained inactive in the party, they had not only lost sense of direction but also worried about their political future.

He also said the party members informed him that the leadership in the state was planning to expel him and that they wondered what would happen to them if he was expelled because they would become rudderless.

“You are our leader and it is you we are following. You have remained a card-carrying member of the the party. But since you became angry with the party we have lost sense of direction and now we are hearing that they want to expel you. If they expel you, where do we go? What do we do?” Mr. Obasanjo quoted the ward chairman as saying.

The former president explained that it was at that point that he gave them his PDP membership card and told them that they could do whatever they want with it.

He said, “In my response, I said when you people came you were singing a song and I agreed that Nigeria is our own. If the issue is the party, I will not choose the party at the detriment of Nigeria and I will fight for Nigeria even at the detriment of the party. I will rather surrender my membership of the party so you people can move on politically,”

Mr. Obasanjo explained to PREMIUM TIMES.

“If you people’s worry is that I’m a card-carrying member of the party and I’m not showing you people direction and you are worried that I’m neither here nor there, this is the card; you can keep it, you can burn it or you can tear it, do whatever you want to do with it.”

The former president said he then handed over his membership card to Mr. Oladunjoye, who immediately decided on his own to shred it.

Mr. Obasanjo said he had no regrets for his action despite the criticisms that have greeted it.

U.S Vows To Provide Communications Equipment In Fight Against Boko Haram

The United States military will provide communications equipment and intelligence to help African nations in the fight against Islamist group Boko Haram, the Commander of U.S. Special Forces Operations in Africa,James Linder said.

The aid is part of the annual U.S.-backed ‘Flintlock’ counter-terrorism exercises.

The U.S will provide technology allowing African partners to communicate between cell phones, radios and computers.

The system also incorporates a translation function that will allow commanders in francophone countries like Chad to communicate by message with English-speaking officers in Nigeria.

The four nations of the Lake Chad region—Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria—plus neighboring Benin are preparing a joint task-force of 8,700 men to take on the Sunni jihadist group.

Chad’s military, which played a leading role in a French-led campaign that ousted Islamist groups from northern Mali in 2013, has already led attacks against Boko Haram positions in Nigeria’s border regions.

“The Lake Chad nations are battling Boko Haram and we have a vested interest in that group of nations’ collective success.

What Boko Harm is doing is a murderous rampage, about brutality, intolerance and subjugation.

There is discussion on how will we provide additional tools, techniques, and material to partner with nations”, Linder said.

At the Flintlock exercises, the U.S. military will also introduce a Cloud-based technology to allow African allies

to quickly share intelligence, such as mapping information on the location of potential targets.

The ninth edition of Flintlock, grouping 1,300 soldiers from 28 African and Western nations, will emphasise the importance of troops fostering strong relations with local communities to gain intelligence on insurgent groups.

Linder said African armies were well-placed to gather this kind of information, but that the United States could share other kinds of intelligence to boost the success of operations against Boko Haram.

“It’s the things that we find from flying over a target and having a full motion video, or being able to take pictures.

It also includes being able to do a different type of geo-spatial analysis or predictive analysis on the enemy”, he said.

Washington’s long-term goal is to enable African nations to be sufficiently trained and equipped to face their own security challenges.

By 2050, one-third of the global population will be on the African continent,” he said.

He added that the global economy/community needs stable countries in Africa and that can only happen through African nations themselves.

West African military commanders have long complained that cross-border operations against Islamist groups had been obstructed by lack of compatible communications equipment.

Mass Burial To Be Held For The 11 Bayelsa Women.

It has been confirmed that it was only 11 women not 20 as earlier reported by the media that died in the fatal accident involving the female politicians from bayelsa.

However the 11 female Bayelsa politicians who died in an auto crash on Saturday near the Old Ahoada Market road along the East-West road of Rivers state will be given mass burial due to the inability of relations to recognize their burnt remains and with expert pathologists saying a DNA test would take up to six months, further prolonging the psychological torture of deceased families, and advising that a mass burial would be a better option.

Members of the families have also agreed to this decision.

Rt. Hon Seibarugu Werinipre, former deputy governor toTimipre Sylvaand state coordinator of Transformation Ambassador of Nigeria (TAN) led the team that conveyed the ashes and unidentified skulls of the 11 female politicians conveyed to the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, yesterday.

Husband of one of the victims and staff of the State Broadcasting Corporation, Mathew Utolor, told journalists that the families could not identify their loved one. “I could not believe that I cannot identify my wife,” he said.

Ambrose Ayebakuro, the 33-year old son of the deceased former House of Assembly member, Hon. Ruby Benjamin, confirmed that they had been contacted that a mass burial would be conducted for the victims. “She was everything to us. But I take solace in the fact that she was close to God.”

We’ve Not Endorsed Any Presidential Candidate — Esan Royal Fathers Speaks.

BENIN—ESAN traditional rulers in Edo Central senatorial district, Edo State, yesterday, distanced themselves from the purported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathanby Esan Elders Forum, saying: “You cannot endorse any presidential candidate without the involvement of Esan traditional rulers.”

The traditional rulers were reacting to the declaration byChief Julius Akpede, chairman ofEsan Elders Forum, that Esan people had backed the re-election of President Jonathan.

However, first Vice Chairman of Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, and the Onojie of Opoji, HRM Aidonojie Ehidiamen, described the purported endorsement as untrue and an attempt to disrespect Esan traditional rulers.

He said: “The so called Elders Forum is a committee set up by the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolemenmen because of his governorship ambition and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, interest. They are an unknown group in Esanland. So, that committee is only fighting for the interest of Onolemenmen and not that of Esan people.

They cannot sit in one room and say they have endorsed Jonathan without the support of Esan traditional rulers and Esan elites.

“They do not represent the elders of Esanland. The Vice Chairman of that body is the brother of the minister. Where did they hold the meeting without the Esan traditional rulers? We as Esan people have never sat down, to deliberate on who to support for the Presidency.

President Jonathan is contesting,Gen Muhammadu Buhari is contesting and you cannot just go to press without carrying traditional rulers along.”

Native Doctors Storm Imo Govt House For Cleansing Over Alleged Coffin

Native doctors and traditional rulers yesterday stormed the Imo Government House, Owerri to perform what they described as exorcism of evil spirits, saying they came to cleanse the state of the curse placed by widows who protested last Tuesday.

The libation-pouring exercise, which began at the main gate of the Government House, was presided over by traditional rulers mainly from the Governor Rochas Okorocha’s community of Ideato South.

According to TheNationalMirror, the monarchs alleged that the Minister of State for Education, Prof Viola Onwuliri, mobilised the widows who were brutalised in the course of their protest march against the governor.

Chairman of Ideato Council of Traditional Rulers, Ajaraogu of Ogwume Community, Eze Ethelbert,

said he and the entire council of Ndi Eze in the council area had earlier visited the traditional ruler of Amuzi in Ahiazu Mbaise, Eze Innocent Ugochukwu, to warn their daughter, Onwuliri, and her group against contending with the governor.

Eze Ajaraogu stated that they came to the Government House to neutralise whatever evil the action of the widows may have attracted, as they jointly poured libation to cleanse the Douglas House.

Pouring the libation, they prayed for divine guidance and protection of Okorocha saying, “Our son, Owelle Okorocha, you did not cheat anyone to come to Government House but were duly elected by the entire Imo people, so no one will hurt you. Fear not, your people are with you and you shall return,” he chanted.

Also, the deputy chairman, Eze Peter Ewuziem of Umuakam noted that for over 40 years he has been on the throne, “this is the first time anyone would carry a coffin to the domain of either civilian or military leader; any person who planned this evil must receive it back.”

However, one of the brutalised widows maintained that she was part of the protest march and no coffin was on display. She said, “Who would carry the coffin, is it the old women? There was no coffin anywhere, but if they insist they saw a coffin, then perhaps their gods may be giving them a sign of doom.”

Meanwhile, Mrs Onwuliri has called on the governor to apologise to the widows for encouraging young men to “attack and beat up their mothers.”

She said, “Even in the Bible, there is a curse attached to such atrocity and whoever may have participated or engineered the attack on harmless widows, who merely engaged in a peaceful protest, cannot go unpunished.”

Barclays Seeks Investment Banking Licence In Nigeria

Barclays Africa Group Limited’s corporate and investment banking unit has approached the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for approval to convert its representative office in Lagos to a full-fledged banking business.

The bank has been increasing its presence in Lagos in anticipation of the approval from the CBN. Bloomberg quoted the bank’s Head of Corporate and Investment Banking outside South Africa for Barclays Africa, Temi Ofong, to have said in a recent interview in Gaborone, Botswana.

The Nigerian licencing process could take at least 12 months, Ofong said.

“We have an ongoing strategy to expand our footprint and we have formally engaged the authorities in Nigeria to apply for licences,” he said.

The Barclays Africa unit’s representative office has been expanded to have 20 staff, Ofong said.

“These include investment brokers and a trade finance team of four people out of Lagos.”

Standard Chartered Plc, Standard Bank Group Limited and the investment banking unit of FirstRand Limited, Africa’s biggest bank, all have operating licences in Nigeria.

The country’s economy will probably expand by 4.8 per cent this year, more than twice as fast as South Africa’s projected 2.1 per cent, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Barclays Africa worked on the sale of Mainstreet Bank Limited, among distressed lenders bailed out by the CBN, to Skye Bank Plc, Ofong added.

His unit has also been “short-listed” to manage a Nigerian initial public offering, Ofong said, without giving details.

In addition to Nigeria, Barclays Africa sees corporate and investment banking growth opportunities in Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Zambia, Mauritius, Mozambique, and Botswana, according to Ofong.

The unit has been growing its assets by more than 30 per cent on an annual basis “and we would want to continue going into the new financial year,” he said.

If Barclays secures the licence, it will mark the bank’s second entry into the Nigerian banking space.

Set up by the British colonial administration in 1917, Barclays was one of Nigeria’s largest banks after independence. In 1969, Barclays was incorporated in Nigeria as Barclays Bank of Nigeria Limited to comply with the country’s banking laws enacted in 1968.

However, the bank was forced to withdraw following the Indigenisation Decree promulgated by the Nigerian military regime in the 1970s in protest against Britain’s refusal to sanction the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Following Barclays’ departure, the successor bank was named Union Bank of Nigeria (UBN).

Recently, Atlas Mara, the African investment vehicle of former Barclays boss, Bob Diamond, increased its stake in UBN having acquired a 20.9 per cent stake in UBN from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Barclays’ re-entry into the Nigerian economy confirms analysts’ forecasts that activities in the merchant banking segment of the financial market would increase this year, as the market anticipates the entrance of more players in the sub-sector.

This is also expected to support corporate and trade financing in the country.

Presently, there are two licensed merchant banks in the country – FSDH Merchant Bank Limited and Rand Merchant Bank.

Kakawa Discount House Limited that has also been granted an approval-in-principle by the CBN is expected to commence operations this year.

We Lack The Capacity To Prevent Corruption In Nigeria – Okonjo-Iweala

Abuja – The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said on Tuesday that corruption persisted in the country because Nigeria lacked the institutions, systems and processes to prevent it.

Okonjo-Iweala made this known when she spoke on the Topic: `Preventing Leakages in the Nigerian Economy` at the Catholic Caritas Foundation Forum in Abuja.

According to her, the absence of the relevant systems and institutions that will help check corruption has created opportunities for people to engage in the act.

“This thing has been with us and we must crack it. This is not something that started in this country today; but it is something that we must crack.

“Fundamentally, we have to ask ourselves, why has this continued to be a problem; I am convinced that it is because we constantly look at the symptoms and not the cause of the disease.

“The cause of the disease is we don’t have in place the institutions, the systems and the processes to block and prevent it in the first place.

“That’s the only difference between us and the people abroad.`

The minister assured that people would be compelled to do the right thing always if the appropriate systems were in place to block and prevent corruption.

She urged youths in the country to ask the relevant questions that would help tackle corruption in the country.

She said: “This is so important now because of technology and I am a total fan of the use of technology and electronic platforms to block the leakages in this country.

“We must use them the way they are being used in other countries.“

Okonjo-Iweala said that the introduction of the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMS) had helped to reduce physical movement of cash to make payments and curb corruption.

She said that the Integrated Personnel Payment System had also helped government to remove ghost workers from the system and save money in the process.

She said, “We have been able to weed out about 62,893 ghost workers till date saving N208.7 billion and we have not finished in the system. That is addressing the root cause.“

The minister said that the names of the persons found to be involved in the act had been sent to the ICPC for further action.

OKonjo-Iweala said that through the electronic wallet system introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, government had been able to reduce corruption in fertilizer distribution in the country.

According to her, 10.5 million farmers have been registered under the system with more than 6 million being able to access the product personally.

This, she said, had contributed to increased food production.

The minister said that with the creation of the Pension Transmission Administration Department as demanded by law, issues with old pension were being handled systematically

She said that 14 people were presently under trial for various pension scams in the country.

Commenting on the outcome of the forensic Audit on the alleged 20 billion dollars missing oil money, she said the ministry had written to the NNPC asking it to remit the amount as directed by the auditors. (NAN)

Did Obi Asika take Reno Omokri's job? Eh, no! Here's what I know

So the news of Reno Omokri being sacked by Pres. Jonathan and Obi Asika taking over his position went viral yesterday and many of you wondered why I didn't carry the news. Well, that's because I know it's not completely true. Here's what I know - which I found out a few weeks back by the way.

Obi Asika has been hired by the current administration - that's a fact - but his position is not same level as Reno. Reno is the Special Assistant to President Jonathan on New Media in Oronto Douglas office while Obi Asika is now SSA to president Jonathan, Social Media. It's like cabinet level rank of Minister of State - which will be the first time for social media in Africa. They're taking social media serious now...;-)

Obi Asika has resumed officially and his play will be on digital Nigeria, web strategy etc. This is a LIB exclusive..:-). Hoping to get an exclusive interview with Obi Asika soon.

An eyewitness, who spoke on grounds of anonymity stated that a close look at the lady’s corpse revealed bruises, especially around the breasts and private parts.

The witness said:

“I am not too sure that it was a case of ritual killing because no part of the girl was missing. It is, to me, a case of brutal gang-raping to death of the unfortunate girl.”

The source said nobody knew how the lifeless body was dumped along the road at Okwu or did it.

Speaking also on the issue, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Leo Nwokocha, said the identity of the dead lady was still unknown.

10 Words Nigerians Use That Are Not In The Dictionary

Disvirgin, cross-carpeting, go-slow & 7 more ‘words’ you won’t find in the dictionary By @ChineduRylan

Installmentally: This “word” is a favourite of many Nigerians, but, sadly, it simply does not exist. You won’t find it any reputable dictionary. The correct thing to say when “installmentally” comes to your mind is in instalments or by instalments.

Plumpy: Nigerians use “plumpy” when they want to say that someone is chubby or slightly fat. The correct expression is plump.

Disvirgin: This particular “word” is used severally on a daily basis, especially by Nigerian men when they intend saying that a woman has lost her virginity to a guy. The correct word to use, however, is deflower, because “disvirgin” is not a word.

Crosscarpeting or cross-carpeting: This is a favourite of Nigerian politicians and political analysts alike. They use it when they want to say that a politician has dumped his political party for another party, usually a rival party. The right terms to use when describing this scenario are party switching, defection and crossing the floor and not “cross-carpeting” or “crosscarpeting.”

Go-slow: The word go-slow exists, but not in the way Nigerians use it. A “go-slow,” in the peculiarly Nigerian context, is a situation in which road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues. However, go-slow in the English language actually means an industrial tactic used by employees whereby they intentionally reduce activity, productivity and efficiency in order to press home some demands. When this happens, you say that work in the office, factory or organization is at a go-slow. The correct terms to use when road traffic is very sluggish due to vehicle queues are traffic jam, traffic congestion, gridlock, and (less technically) hold-up, not “go-slow.”

Cunny: “Cunny” is not found in authoritative dictionaries, but it can be found in some slang dictionaries. Over there, it is a slang used to refer to a woman’s vagina. The correct term to use is cunning (which is used to describe someone that is being deceitful or crafty) and not “cunny.”

Opportuned: There is nothing like “opportuned” anywhere in the English language, but that has not stopped its blatant use by all and sundry in Nigeria, including journalists and writers. The correct word is opportune. The word opportune is an adjective; therefore it has no past tense. An adjective has no past tense. However, some verbs can function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence. These verbs are called participles and they do have past tenses. They are not pure adjectives. Examples of participles are fattened, amused, disgusted, mystified, overwhelmed, upset and bored. Be that as it may, opportune is a pure adjective and not a participle, therefore it has no past tense. Opportune means appropriate or well-timed.

Alright: “Alright” is a misspelling of the term all right. All right is used when you want to say that something is adequate, acceptable, agreeable or suitable. To hardcore English language linguists, “alright” is not a word. However, its usage is gaining traction and it’s increasingly becoming acceptable. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary – which is considered the gold standard among American English speakers – has recently drawn a lot of criticisms for its permissiveness when it began indexing some otherwise colloquial and street language terms, including “alright.” Most linguists disagree with the gradual acceptance of “alright” as a word by the public and even the media, while those in the minority are “alright” with it.

Wake-keeping: “Wake-keeping” exists only in the imagination of a few English speakers. As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as “wake-keeping.” The correct word is wake and not even “wake-keep.” Both “wake-keeping” and “wake-keep” are ungrammatical.

Screentouch: This bad grammatical expression gained currency in Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries with the influx of made-in-China stylus pen touchscreen not-so-smart phones in the mid 2000s. It was a novelty then; many in Nigeria had not seen it – or even thought such advanced technology was possible – before. So, they looked for a name to call it and “screentouch” came to mind, after all you just touch the screen and it starts working. In case you’ve still not figured it out yet, the correct thing to say is touchscreen and not “screentouch.”

So there you have it, 10 English language “words” Nigerians love to use that are not found in the dictionary. Feel free to add yours.

'If You Follow Social Media, You Would Think APC Has Won 99% Of The Votes' - Lamido

Sule Lamido, governor of Jigawa state, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general election contrary to the impression being created in the social media. He was speaking on Tuesday after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential villa in Abuja.

He said what Nigerians read on the social media is different from reality. “If you go through the social media, what they ‎paint is that APC has won almost 99 percent. In Nigeria?” he said.

Lamido described APC as an “amalgamation” of desperation, saying the country is too big for them to govern. “What is APC? An amalgamation of pain, anger and desperation. And this country is too big for them,” he said. “What is this opposition In Nigeria? You must know Nigerian history. Nigeria cannot be governed by an aggregate of pain, anger and frustration. And I have been saying those called opposition who are now abusing us, whatever might have been our crime, it was that crime that made them. “We created that for them to become either governors, or legislators, we created room for them to emerge.

So whatever they think is our evil, they are the manifestations of the evil. Believe me, you don’t know Nigeria.” ‎Lamido also described former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who on Monday relinquished his PDP membership card, as a father who is angry with his children.

He said: “Baba is more than a party man. He is an icon, a national symbol and a leader and an inventor, a creator of all the institutions today in Nigeria from the presidency to the governors who are his own sons, are all his creations. “And so, when a father is angry with his own children, we will only say we are sorry to him.

But then we cannot be renounced for whatever it is. If you do any political DNA of our blood, you will find his blood in us. No matter what we are, we may not be able to live up to his expectations. “We might have made some mistakes, but abandoning us is not the solution because the country is first before anything else. So, he is our Baba even up to the president. Baba is our Baba no matter what. He is angry with us, but then, what do we do? He gave us the life at a time when Nigerians were fighting us, he stood for us.”

Lamido served as Obasanjo’s foreign minister from 1999 to 2003.

EFCC Arraigns Lawyer For N117m Fraud

Find the EFCC press statement below...

A legal practitioner, Barrister Babatunde Ojo, was on Monday, February 16, 2015 arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on a 48-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, forgery and issuance of dud cheques. Ojo allegedly used his company, Amberville Communications Limited, to obtain the sum of N117, 350, 000.00 (One Hundred and Seventeen Million, Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) from Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Awodiya of First Hebron Homes and Investment Limited in the guise of allocating 50 shops at HFP Eastline Shopping Complex, Ajah, Lagos, to them.

The victim was allegedly linked to Ojo by one of the directors of the Shopping Complex. He was told that, the amount per shop was N4, 000,000 (Four Million Naira only) , with Fifty (50) shops, costing N200, 000,000 (Two Hundred Million Naira only). The victim negotiated for 50 shops but paid a deposit of N117, 350, 000.00 (One Hundred and Seventeen Million, Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira). However, the director that linked the victim with Ojo later denied knowledge of any transaction for sale of shops with the suspect, and invariably debunked claims of having received payment from the suspect.

All efforts to get a refund of the money paid for the shops proved abortive. One of the charges read: “Babatunde Ojo and Amberville Communications Limited, on or about the 13th day of April, 2010 at Lagos within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N15, 000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) from Awodiya Olusegun Mathew under the false pretence that the money was part payment for purchase of fifty (50) shops from HFP Engineering Limited at HFP Eastline Shopping Complex, KM 26, Epe Expressway, Ajah, which representation you knew to be false”. When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting counsel, Vera Agboje prayed the court for a trial date and that the defendant be remanded in prison custody. However, defence counsel, R. U. Nnamani urged the court to allow her present application for bail at the next adjourned date and applied that the suspect be remanded in EFCC custody. Justice Ipaye, however, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Maximum prison and adjourned the matter till March, 18 and 19, 2015 for trial.
