BBC Launches Mobile Platform In Nigeria

Mobile phone users in Nigeria can now tune in to the BBC World Service radio in English and Hausa by dialling the local number, 01 4405 222. BBC World Service is collaborating with ZenoRadio – a leading service that enables radio to be heard on the phone – to give on-demand access to BBC World Service’s audio streams in English (option 1) and Hausa (option 2).

Users can listen to the broadcasts from any mobile network in Nigeria. English-language radio is streamed live around the clock. Programmes in Hausa are streamed live at 06.30, 15.00 and 20.30 Nigeria Time and then repeated until the next programme is broadcast.

To hear the programmes, users can dial 01 4405 222 from any phone in Nigeria and choose the language they prefer from the audio menu. Calls are charged at a normal rate, according to network packages and tariffs.

BBC Africa Editor Solomon Mugera says: “The 01 4405 222 service provides open and easy access to the BBC’s radio programming that until now has only been available in Nigeria via shortwave, online and satellite. Thanks to this development, anybody with a mobile phone in Nigeria can listen to BBC World Service in English or Hausa at any time.”

There are 132 million active mobile devices in Nigeria*. By using ZenoRadio’s technology, the BBC dramatically improves its accessibility to Nigerian audiences, with every mobile phone user getting the chance to tune in to BBC radio.

“Thanks to BBC and our service, listeners in Nigeria can now stay connected to their favourite BBC content from any phone,” said Morris Berger, Chief Executive Officer of ZenoRadio. “As this is our first foray into Africa, we are proud to work with the BBC on this.”

By dialling the 01 4405 222 service, mobile-phone users across Nigeria can tune in to BBC Hausa’s 06.30 broadcast, BBC Shirin Safe, BBC Shirin Rana at 15.00 and BBC Shirin Yamma, at 20.30 Nigeria Time. Popular BBC programmes in English include Newsday every morning from 04.00 to 08.30 and Focus on Africa at 16.00, 18.00 and 20.00.

BBC Hausa is part of BBC World Service.

Why Are Smartphones Substitutes For Bibles In Church

null

Reasons why sincere Christians should take the book known as the bible to church not a smartphone

1) Holding a bible shows one to be a Christian in public,it acts as an ‘identity card’ for every Christian. Ipads, smartphones does no such thing

2)Civilisation/technology has given us world where homosexuality is gradually being accepted, female reverends and gender changes all in contrast to biblical pronouncements. The church shouldn’t follow the ways of this present world so closely

3)Christians lose the essence of the bible like the order of biblical books(after genesis is exodus…..3rd John then revelations) as a simple google search provides answer in comparison to scrolling round the bible and get fully acquitted with it

4) Ipads, smartphone substitutes acts as sources of distraction in churches with calls, pings, alerts and ‘nairalanding’ available at one’s beck/call.

5) Ipads, smartphones serve one primary aim to most holders, showoff

6) ‘battery low’

Re: Why Smartphones Are No Substitute For Bibles by mistypiper(m): 8:26am
I think smart phone is not a substitute for the bible but it’s smart to have the bible app. On sunday or anytime it’s important to go with your bible because if you don’t, it’s like going the farm to work without tool. I’ll share a short story below for others to learn from.

A friend called me from the police station that he needs my help to get him out of there on a saturday morning, i was surprised to hear that because i met him on his way to Vigil the other night.

On getting to the police station, I saw my friends name on the detention board. I went through all the police bail process to get him out of there , Thank God he was ok.

On our way home I asked him what happened, he said on his way back to the hostel from church the police stopped him and asked where he was coming from. He told them he was coming from church vigil and they requested to see his bible na so my friend carry him phone and tried to show dem the bible app but it didn’t convince the police men. so they arrested him.

i just couldn’t help but laugh because if he had his bible on him, it would have been a different story. So its important to go with your bible to church

Happy Sunday.

Happy Birthday; Lagos State Governor Ambode Is A Year Older Today.

null

Lagos State Governor,Akinwunmi Ambode is 52-years-old today, June 14, 2015.

Ambode was born on June 14, 1963, to Festus Akinwale Ambode and Christianah Oluleye Ambode as the sixth of ten children.

He was sworn into office as Governor on Friday, May 29, 2015, and previously served as Accountant-General of the state.

While speaking on the occasion, Ambode’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna said:

“As we celebrate Ambode at 52 today, the thinking is that he has not arrived, even if materially he is classed as among the Joneses.

He has not arrived in the sense that he wants to be judged more by how he strives to lift the poor from their poverty, how his government initiates and pursues policies to identify the administration as a compassionate one, how his team relates with the man in the street and how state institutions help the people to live their dreams.”

The governor had earlier said that his birthday celebration would be dedicated to the fight against cancer.

From Naiajaloaded we say a loud happy birthday to his Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode May God bless and direct you to give us a better Lagos state in the next four years

Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan Ruined Power Sector – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday attributed the deplorable power situation in the country to dubious awards of contracts by previous administrations. Various contracts for power projects were awarded by the administrations of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan over the last 16 years.
Under Obasanjo, a probe of the power sector by the House of Representatives ended on a controversial note. Osinbajo, who made the declaration in Abeokuta, said large-scale corrupt practices in the contract awards for power generation, distribution and transmission were responsible for the collapse of the sector. He said these while delivering a lecture titled, ‘Nigerian economy and the future’ at the 10th anniversary of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Vice-President, who stated that several billions of dollars had been invested in Nigeria’s power sector over the years, declared that the sector needs total overhauling to stabilise and boost the nation’s dwindling economy.

According to him, Nigeria needs more than 10,000 megawatts to stabilise economic growth but the current capacity of power transmission lines cannot distribute more than 5,000 megawatts. Osinbajo said, “Unfaithfulness to awards of contracts and execution of contracts being awarded are the major challenges. Several contracts in that regards have been awarded several years back but have not been completed.

“What is being produced now is less than 3,000 MW. Our transmission grid today can only transmit 5,000 MW and we need to improve on transmission capacity to transmit enough power needed to stabilise economy.
That is why private investors have to increase capital investment in power sector.” He said the 10 per cent Gross Domestic Product promised by President Muhammadu Buhari during the campaign can only be realised with significant improvement in the power sector.

The vice-president noted that the non-availability of gas had adversely affected power supply but assured that the Federal Government would ensure the completion of gas pipelines that had been abandoned for years. Osinbajo, who said the current power sector privatisation covers only the distribution aspect, noted that the All Progressives Congress-led administration would consider the privatisation of power transmission which is still under the control of the Federal Government.

He assured that government would ensure maximum protection of pipelines in order to improve the power situation in the country, adding that transparency would be the Buhari-led administration’s watchword. He, however, hinted that some tough decisions would have to be taken to put the country back on track in line with the APC’s manifestos.
He said, “Insurgency and instability of government are major setbacks, especially in the agricultural sector. Agriculture contributes 24 per cent to Nigeria GDP but the 24 percent is under threat because of the insurgency in the North- East.

“The militancy in the south has also reduced oil production significantly and that is why any form of extremism must be put down not only because of the economy but for the unity and peace of the country and that is why all the recent initiatives are important because we must deal with the question of economy. “In the petroleum sector, vandalism also contributes in no small measure to the drop in the output of the sector. 400, 000 barrels are stolen on daily basis while countries like Ghana only survive on less than 150, 000 barrels.

That Military Alone Can’t End Boko Haram – Obasanjo

null

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the use of only military operations to tackle Boko Haram activities in Nigeria and other violent groups across the world cannot end insurgency.

A statement on Friday by the African Export-Import Bank, indicated that the former president said this during the bank’s 22nd Annual General Meeting held in Lusaka, Zambia.

Obasanjo, speaking about conflicts in Africa, also said the crises were caused by failure to address certain social problems in the society such as educational disparity.

Afrixembank’s spokesman, Obi Emekekwue quoted Obasanjo in the statement thus, “He proposed a carrot and stick solution to the conflicts on the continent through an approach involving military solutions and social development since a purely military approach would not work.

“According to Obasanjo, a situation, such as in Nigeria, where one section had an educational attainment level of 79 per cent while another had only 19 per cent, created room for conflict.”

The former president also called on Nigeria and other African countries to pursue economic integration on the basis of regional economic communities rather than doing so with the over 54 countries on the continent.

He noted that by pursuing economic growth, each region of the continent would serve as platforms to strengthen Africa.

In a wide-ranging discussion, the ex-president stressed the importance of infrastructure in promoting intra-African trade and called for the establishment of a viable well-run coastal shipping line from Dakar in Senegal to Maputo in Mozambique to improve intra-African trade.

Obasanjo stated further that while Nigeria and other nations on the continent should encourage the local production of goods, they should also encourage and develop the process of moving those goods.

The statement added, “Former President Obasanjo added that Africa should start adding value to its commodities rather than exporting raw commodities only for those commodities to be sent back to the continent as finished goods.”

Meanwhile, the Afreximbank on Saturday announced the appointment of Benedict Oramah as its new boss.

Oramah’s appointment was one of the key decisions taken during the bank’s AGM.

“Dr. Oramah takes over from Jean-Louis Ekra, who has been the bank’s chief executive officer since 2005. Oramah, a Nigerian national, has served as Executive Vice President in charge of Business Development and Corporate Banking at Afreximbank since 2008. He was a pioneer staff of the bank, which he joined in 1994 as Chief Analyst, rising to the position of Senior Director, Planning and Business Development Department in 2007. He previously served as Assistant Manager (Research) at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank from 1992 to 1994,” the statement said

VP Osinbajo-Over 100m Nigerians live below poverty level

null

Vice-president, Yemi Osinbanjo who delivered the 10th anniversary lecture of Crescent University, Abeokuta, tagged, “The Nigerian Economy and the Future”, yesterday said that some tough decisions would have to be taken to put the country back on the path of genuine growth and development in line with the All Progressives Party (APC) programme.

He also said that large-scale corrupt practices and dubious awards of contract in Nigeria’s power sector by past administrations were responsible for inadequate and epileptic power supply in the country.
He said that despite several billions dollar-investment in power generation and distribution over the years by government, businesses and Nigerians still suffer greatly on account of electricity and suggests that there should be a total overhaul in the sector in terms of generation and distribution if all efforts on power production must be achieved.

According to him, records showed that series of contracts were awarded in the power sector for several years and are still ongoing without any real improvement.

He said,

“Though Nigeria needs more than 10,000MW to stabilise economic growth, the present capacity of power transmission lines cannot distribute more than 5,000 MW since the improvement works on transmission lines have been stagnant over years and should be improved upon if Nigeria must achieve tangible output from the sector.

“Unfaithful to awards of contract and execution of contracts being awarded are the major challenges. Several contracts in that regards have been awarded several years back, but have not been completed.

“What is being produced now is less than 3,000 MW. Our transmission grid today can only transmit 5,000 MW and we need to improve on transmission capacity to transmit enough power needed to stabilise economy. That is why the private investors have to increase capital investment in power sector.
