Why I Conceded Defeat To Buhari – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has defended his decision to concede defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 election, saying he was concerned about allowing his personal ambition scuttle a democratic system he helped nurtured, with the likely consequence of a “collective tragedy”.

Mr. Jonathan said Thursday that he needed to check his ambition, as the consequences of not doing so may have been dire not only for Nigeria, but Africa.

The president made the remarks during separate meetings with the new ambassadors of France, Senegal and Ethiopia. He was responding to commendations for his decision to promptly accept defeat after it became clear Mr. Buhari had won the polls.

“Democracy has to be nurtured to grow. Strong democratic institutions are the backbone and future of our democracy. They must be protected and nurtured. As for me, as a matter of principle, it is always the nation first,” Mr. Jonathan said.

“You need to have a nation before you can have an ambition. It should always be the nation first. You don’t have to scuttle national progress for personal ambition.

“Since I assumed duty, I have been involved in quelling political crisis in some African countries and I know what they passed through and what some are still going through. If you scuttle a system for personal ambition, it becomes a collective tragedy,’’ President Jonathan declared.

Mr. Jonathan urged world leaders and international institutions to give their fullest possible support to the incoming administration of Buhari.

He also called on all Nigerians to do their utmost best to help the incoming president succeed in leading the country to greater heights of accomplishment.

The president appealed for patience, understanding and cooperation, which, he said, Mr. Buhari will need to move the country forward to greater, peace, security and progress.

Speaking with the new French ambassador, Denis Guaer, President Jonathan urged France to extend the support and assistance it gave to his administration to Mr. Buhari’s government.

“President Francois Hollande was our guest in Nigeria during the celebration of Nigeria’s centenary. He has been very supportive of the country in the fight against terrorism. I expect that the same warmth and goodwill will be extended to the incoming government. I expect that France will continue to work with the new administration, especially on issues of terrorism.

“The United Nations has been supportive as well. Our troops, supported by regional forces, have done very well in fighting the terrorists in recent times. What we need now is support to help our people get back their lives,’’ he said.

The ambassadors commended President Jonathan for setting a record of humility, patriotism and courage in safeguarding the democratic process in Nigeria and Africa.

“Nigeria is not only an economic power in the world today, but also a great democratic example. And it is all by your effort, Mr. President. The last elections and your response was truly a great achievement and you will always be remembered for it,” the French ambassador told the President.

Mr. Guaer, the new Ambassador of Senegal, Baboucar Sambe, and the new Ambassador of Ethiopia, Samia Zekaria Gutu, who were at the Presidential Villa to present their letters of credence to President Jonathan, also assured him that they will do their best to strengthen relations between Nigeria and their countries during their tenure.

Shekau On Time Magazine’s 100 Influential Persons List

Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau has been named in the Time Magazine annual 100 influential people in the world list.

In a release on Thursday by the magazine, Shekau described as “Scourge of Africa” was named under the leaders category.

He was named along with President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari and former Minister of Education and leader of the Brigbackourgirls campaign group , Oby Ezekwesili

Most Americans do not yet recognize his name, but the citizens of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, know Abubakar Shekau all too well: he is the most violent killer their country has ever seen. Shekau took over the terrorist organization Boko Haram in 2009 after the group had been weakened by Nigerian government forces.

A brief profile of Shekau reads:

“Shekau, who is believed to be in his 30s, began to stage increasingly daring kidnapping and killing raids on schools, churches and mosques thought by Boko Haram to be violating their interpretation of Islam. The taking of over 200 schoolgirls in April 2014 brought Boko Haram into the international spotlight.

“By most accounts, Boko Haram has killed more than 10,000 people and is spreading into neighboring countries. Shekau’s latest action may finally summon a U.S. response: he has publicly aligned his group with ISIS, the terrorist group that holds territory in Syria and Iraq and has expanded its reach into Yemen and Libya.”

Abdulsalami Abubakar Leads Alison-Madueke To Meet President Jonathan

A former military Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (retd.), on Thursday led the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to a closed-door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Alison-Madueke arrived the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for the meeting about three minutes after Abubakar made his way into the President’s office.

It will be recalled that a photograph of the minister during a visit to the former military leader’s Minna residence went viral on the Internet recently with many people insinuating that she must be reaching out to Abubakar to avoid probe by the incoming administration of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Less than 30 minutes after both of them entered the President’s office, Abubakar emerged, leaving Alison-Madueke behind.

When State House correspondents asked him for the purpose of his visit, the former military leader said it was in continuation of his job as the chairman of the National Peace Committee for the 2015 General Elections.

“As the chairman of the peace committee, there is always interaction between the incoming president and President Jonathan, in order to ensure that the peace we have been able to get is sustained.

“So naturally, I am here to touch base with him and also to give him a report of what the committee has been doing,” he said.

When confronted with the issue of his recent meeting with the minister and the fact that they entered the President’s office almost the same time, Abubakar said those reading meanings into the visit were just being mischievous.

He said he had met many times with Alison-Madueke and other ministers, wondering why the latest meeting became an issue.

He said, “I think people are just trying to be mischievous, I have been meeting with a lot of people and a lot of ministers in the course of this transition. So there is nothing strange in me meeting with anybody.

“I wonder if you go through your records to see the number of meetings I have been engaging in. I don’t know why the last one will be a subject of media chat.

“This is not the first time I have been meeting her (Alison-Madueke) and a number of ministers, so I don’t see what the whole hullabaloo is all about. People are just being mischievous.”

Abubakar said he had continued to meet Jonathan and the President-elect for the transition to go on smoothly and maintain the peace.

“You are aware that there are some disturbances in some of the states and of course both the incoming and outgoing Presidents have roles to play. The chairman of the various parties have roles to play in order to maintain that peace,” he added.

On the peace achieved during and after the elections, the former Head of State said Nigerians should thank God; Jonathan for his statesmanship; and Buhari for harping on his supporters to tune down their celebration.

Again, Court Re‎fuses To Stop Impeachment Move Against Fayose

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja Thursday rejected an oral application by lawyer to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for an order stopping the on-going move to impeach the governor.

Fayose’s lawyer, Ahmed Raji (SAN) had shortly before the end of proceedings in the case seeking to stop the on-going impeachment move, applied orally for an order directing parties to maintain status quo ante bellum “to stop things from degenerating further.”

Justice Mohammed, in a ruling, rejected Raji’s prayer and upheld the argument by Terence Vembe, lawyer to Ekiti State Speaker, Adewale Omirin, to the effect that granting such prayer will amount to the court amending its earlier ruling that the defendants were still within time show cause, as earlier ordered by the court.

The judge had, last Wednesday, refused Fayose’s ex-parte prayers for interim injunctions restraining Omirin and other defendants in the case from proceeding with the impeachment move.

Instead, Justice Mohammed ordered the defendants to show cause why the orders of interim injunction sought by the plaintiffs should not be granted.

Plaintiffs in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/302/2015 include Olugbemi Joseph Dele (who claimed to be Speaker of the State Assembly), Ekiti State House of Assembly, Fayose and his deputy, Olusola Kolapo.

Listed as defendants are Omirin, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Chief Judge, Ekiti State.

At the commencement of proceedings Thursday, Raji urged the court to grant the order of interim injunction on the ground that none of the defendants complied with the court’s order of April 8 directing them to show cause.

“None of the defendants has filed any paper and already a life has been lost on the account of trying to carry out the illegal act (impeachment). To save more life, I urge my Lord to grant the reliefs 5, 6, 7 and 8 on our motion paper.”

Vembe objected and told the court that his client were contesting the mode of service of the court processes on him, which he said, was done through a newspaper publication on April 11 which was a public holiday.

He further faulted the service effected by the plaintiffs via a publication in the Nigerian Tribune newspaper on April 11 on the ground that movements were restricted on that day owing to the governorship and House of Assembly elections held nationwide.

In a brief ruling, Justice Mohammed upheld Raji’s argument that Vembe‎ could not canvass any argument on the issue of service orally without putting it in writing as required under the court’s rules.

Vembe proceeded to argue that his client was still within time to obey the court’s order directing him and other defendants to show cause.

Although Raji objected to Vembe’s further argument that his client was still within time, Justice Mohammed, in yet another brief ruling, upheld Vembe’s argument.

The judge noted that the publication ought not to have been done on a public holiday. He held that the three days within which the defendants were required to comply with the court’s order began to run on Tuesday, April 14 and will end on Friday‎, April 17.

“As of today, the 1st defendant is still within time as provided by Order 36 Rule 13 of the Federal High Court Rules,” the judge said.

Further hearing in the case has been fixed for April 29.

The plaintiffs are, in the substantive suit, seeking nine prayers among which is “an order setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all steps taken by the 1st defendant (Omirin) with other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) in relation to the purported issuance and service of the said notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding the impeachment proceedings against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”

DETAILS: How FEC meeting held with sad faces in Aso Rock

image

Since President Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential election to General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, there has been graveyard silence in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Immediately he conceded defeat and called Buhari on March 31, the President received a few persons who came to commend him for what they called his rare display of sportsmanship.

With that over, the seat of power became silent. The lull in activities in the villa forced a journalist to exclaim unconsciously recently inside Aso Rock that “failure is indeed an orphan.”

When news filtered in on Tuesday that Jonathan and his ministers would, on Wednesday, be holding the first Federal Executive Council meeting after his electoral loss, some of us looked forward to capturing the mood at the meeting.

As of 9.30am, members of the council had started arriving the Council Chamber – the venue of the meeting. Unlike previous meetings when members would gather, laugh and pose for photographs, many walked quietly into the venue and quickly located their seats.

After watching the mood for some time, they started gathering in groups: more of ethnic groupings. They were analysing the performance of the Peoples Democratic Party in their various zones. At first, they discussed in hushed tones. Later, temper rose and journalists who had their ears on the ground started deciphering some of the discussions.

For Jonathan’s performance in the South West, it was the responsibility of the Yoruba ministers to take stock. Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan (Osun); Minister of State II, Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos); Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide (Oyo); and the Minister of State, Works, Dayo Adeyeye (Ekiti), gathered at a strategic spot and started blowing their own trumpets.

In order not to be accused of eavesdropping, I will not disclose details of what transpired among them. The summary, however, is that expectedly, like the proverbial lizard that fell from a height and nodded its head to commend itself, the ministers believed that they did their best for their principal. It is, however, no longer news that Jonathan did not win in any South West state – except Ekiti.

They were still engrossed in that heated discussion when Jonathan arrived and the meeting started.

As ministers gathered in groups, there were also a lot of political analyses from journalists on their (the ministers’) role in Jonathan’s loss.

The consensus was – and is – that there are many ministers without electoral value in the President’s cabinet. Before now, there had been the general belief that some people betrayed the President and finger is being pointed at some ministers. That is why some people said they expected that Jonathan would dissolve the cabinet after that Wednesday meeting.

After the meeting, many of the ministers also filed out quietly. But there were some of them who managed to remain their cheerful selves.

One can only imagine what would have happened at Wednesday’s meeting if Jonathan had won the election. The ministers would have walked into the venue with their shoulders high. They would have hugged and cracked jokes. They could have even rehearsed a congratulatory song that they would have rendered to the President’s admiration.

In fact, a giant celebration cake would have been placed inside the tea room and Jonathan would have cut it with the ministers beaming with smiles behind him. Of course, the ministers would have stood up one after the other to eulogise the President after presenting a giant greeting card that they would all have signed and presented to him.

These are mere imaginations, imaginations and imaginations. But because electoral failure is also an orphan, the story is completely different now.

Good one:- 33yrs Old Man Trekking from Lagos to Abuja Gets Royal Award

image

Two years ago, he promised that if Muhammadu Buhari won the presidential election, he would walk from whatever part of the country he was to the federal capital territory, Abuja. Today he is doing it.

A 33-year-old man, Hasheem Suleiman, who embarked on a walk from Lagos to Abuja to fulfil the promise he made, has reached Niger State where he was warmly received by royal fathers.

Suleiman, who started the trek about 13 days ago, was received in Bida towns of Niger State by Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, at his Wadata Palace, and the emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu.

He arrived at Agaie, a distance of about 50 kilometres from Bida, where he was hosted by the Etsu Nupe and hailed by a crowd of admirers.

image

Also at Agaie, a crowd of admirers, including the emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu, gave the traveller a warm reception in his palace.

On why he embarked on the mission, Suleiman said it was to fulfil a promise he made two years ago.

“I made the promise for this mission to show my love for the leader of the masses, General Muhammadu Buhari, and for the 13-day journey I have embarked upon, I have condemned five pairs of canvass shoes.”

He noted that on setting out, he had made adequate financial provisions for cross-country trek, but that since the journey started, he had not spent anything from the money since he had been warmly welcomed in every town or village he had passed.

Secret Plot By Jonathan Supporters To Kidnap INEC Chairman Jega Exposed

image

Politicians in Nigeria are truly desperate for power, an indication that most of them want power just to have access to our money and sleep with all kinds of girls with big ikebe and oversize watermelon.

Sahara Reporters has learned of a plot to abduct Independent National Election Commission (INEC) Chairman Attahiru Jega by PDP secret agents. The intent was to derail the vote tabulation when it was clear that Goodluck Jonathan of PDP would lose the election to Muhammadu Buhari of APC.

The plotters are said to have included former Minister of State for the Niger Delta, Godsay Orubebe, and members of Jega’s state-sponsored security detail.

Jega was supposed to be abducted after Godsay Orubebe disrupted the declaration of results.

It will be recalled that Orubebe subjected the Nigerian public and entire Election Commission to a lengthy diatribe, claiming that INEC Chairman Jega was biased against President Jonathan.

Sahara Reporters is confirming details, but it is believed that Jega was going to be abducted by agents working for the PDP if he had made a mistake to walk out of the venue when Orubebe was shouting.

Sahara Reporters said they will provide the latest updates, once the details of the plot are confirmed.

Jonathan's Supporters Planned To Kidnap Jega In Order To Disrupt Elections- Reuters

(Reuters) - As Muhammadu Buhari closed in on Nigeria's presidency, an aide to election commission chairman Attahiru Jega sent a text message to an independent voting monitor, warning of an imminent threat to the electoral process.

The aide had unearthed a plot by supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan to disrupt the public announcement of the national election results and kidnap Jega in a bid to wreck the count, according to pro-democracy advocates and a Nigeria-based diplomat.

Central to the plan, they said, were Jega's security detail and Godsday Orubebe, a former cabinet minister from Jonathan's Niger Delta, an area whose leaders feared a change of power would mean an end to the perks it enjoyed under Jonathan's presidency.

Orubebe's role was to cause a disturbance at the headquarters of the commission as cover for the abduction of Jega. Orubebe did not respond to requests for comment on the details of the plot.

The commission, called INEC, also declined to comment and turned down requests for an interview with Jega, whom Reuters was unable to reach independently. Reuters found no evidence to suggest that Jonathan, who conceded defeat in the election, was involved. His spokesman and his party, the PDP, did not respond to requests for comment.

While the plot would likely not have changed the result, it could have unleashed fury among Buhari supporters in the north, where 800 people were killed in rioting after his last election defeat in 2011.

But the plot's failure enabled Africa's most populous country to complete its first credible vote since independence in 1960.

Supporters of the presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressive Congress (APC) party celebrate in Kano March 31, 2015.

"NIGERIA ON TRIAL"

The plot to derail the election in its closing moments was pieced together by Reuters from the text message, events on the ground and interviews with democracy advocates and diplomats in the capital, Abuja.

When he sent the SMS, the election official, whom the sources declined to name for his own protection, hoped the outside world would hear of the plot, the text of the message made clear.

"Fellow countrymen, Nigeria on Trial," read the SMS sent on the morning of March 31 to Clement Nwankwo, head of the Situation Room, an Abuja-based coalition of human rights groups and democracy advocates monitoring the polls. Reuters later saw the SMS.

"Plans are on storm [sic] the podium at the ICC Collation Centre and disrupt the process," it continued, the official dropping words and letters in his haste.

"Nobody is sue [sic] what will happen. Please share this as widely as possible."

At that moment, INEC chairman Jega was about to preside over the announcement of results.

TALLY COUNT

Since the end of army rule in 1999, all four previous votes had been marred by violence and ballot-rigging.

The 2015 poll was different in two crucial aspects.

It was a genuine race, pitting Jonathan, saddled with an ailing economy and an Islamist insurgency, against a former general promising to get tough on corruption and the Boko Haram insurgents.

Voters had also been given biometric ID cards linked to their photographs and fingerprints, making it hard to inflate voter numbers significantly.

As tallies from around the country showed Buhari on course for a win, unidentified PDP hard-liners started to panic, seeking ways of manipulating the count, Nwankwo and the diplomat said, citing political contacts in the Delta and Abuja.

Realising they could not engineer an outright win, PDP agents set about doctoring the tally at collation centres in pro-Jonathan areas to ensure Buhari failed to meet a requirement for 25 percent support in two thirds of states, Nwankwo said, citing reports from election monitors on the ground.

A Reuters reporter witnessed and photographed one tally list in Port Harcourt with suspiciously similar totals for registered voters at polling stations: 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 500, 450. In another tally centre in the city, 17,594 valid votes were recorded out of a registered voter population of 11,757, the Reuters reporter said.

Foreign election observers also noted the peculiarities - and contacted diplomats in Abuja who called in international intervention.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his British counterpart Philip Hammond - in Switzerland for talks on Iran - issued a tough statement saying vote counting "may be subject to deliberate political interference".

"CREATE A FRACAS"

But as Buhari's lead grew, some PDP supporters from the Delta, including Orubebe, decided on a final gamble: to create a disturbance in the main INEC hall and have thugs snatch Jega from the stage, according to Nwankwo and the Abuja-based diplomat.

What the group planned to do after the abduction is unclear, the diplomat and Nwankwo said, but the confusion could have triggered nationwide violence.

"It was a desperate thing, mostly by a group of people from the Niger Delta who were in the room," Nwankwo said, describing events that unfolded publicly in the minutes after he received the SMS.

When Jega opened proceedings on the morning of March 31, Orubebe, the former Niger Delta minister, grabbed a microphone and launched into an 11-minute tirade accusing Jega of bias.

"Mr. Chairman, we have lost confidence in you," he shouted, pushing away officials trying to make him surrender the microphone. "You are being very, very selective. You are partial," he continued, surrounded by three or four supporters. "You are tribalistic. We cannot take it."

Nigerians watched, aghast, on live television.

Meanwhile, Jega's security detail was approached by unidentified individuals telling them to stand down, according to Nwankwo and the diplomat.

But the bodyguards refused.

"Some of the guards who had been guarding Jega for years demanded a written order," Nwankwo said. "But it didn't exist."

Jega then rebuked Orubebe: "Let us not disrupt a process that has ended peacefully," he said as Orubebe slumped in his chair.

"Mr. Orubebe, you are a former minister of the Federal Republic. You are a statesman in your own right. You should be careful about what you say or about what allegations you make," he said.

Later, Orubebe congratulated Buhari on Twitter, expressing his "apologies to fellow Nigerians".

In Buhari, The Spirit Of MKO Abiola May Find Rest - Lisa Akerele

By the dint of a pleasant historical irony, the campaign jingle of the late Chief M.K.O Abiola during the June 12, 1993 Presidential election was the popular lyric: “On The March Again”; and the high point of which slogan then was the ‘search’ for ‘the People’s Choice’.

And although that free-willing determination of the people to ‘march’ for the actualization of their democratic choice was arbitrarily suppressed by the anti-democratic jackboot of vested military interest, that ‘Peoples Spirit’ was only scorched, but not entirely killed.

Thus 22 years since that historic June 12 annulment, Nigerians, for the first time, went ‘On The March Again’ –and this time incidentally in the month of March— to search for a president that is truly the democratic ‘Choice of the People’.

And it was not by accident that that democratic choice of the people would fall on the All Progressives Congress’s Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, one of Nigeria’s foremost military generals and her former head of state reputed as well for his personal discipline and modesty as for his transparency and incorruptibility.

Thus as ‘ghosts’ are said to be spirits that rise from the dead, it is virtually safe to surmise that the ghost of June 12 has, at last, resurrected in the resounding victory of the APC’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

Never since the criminal annulment of June 12 Presidential election has the muffled democratic will of the Nigerian people found such sharp vent nor was suddenly animated by the positive spirit of political change, than by the inevitable advent of the potentially corrective and liberating candidature of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

The general’s persistence and perseverance in his bid for election as Nigeria’s civilian president after three previous failed attempts attest not only to his faith in the democratic process, but is also a veritable proof of the purge in him of the regimentation and impetuosity that the military mind in politics is reputed for.

And just like the Pan Nigerian mandate secured for the first time by the late Chief MKO in 1993, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has re-enacted an electoral feat that is, once again, about to reunite Nigeria just when the country was on the verge of balkanization.

The recent victory of Gen. Buhari (over an arrogantly under-performing incumbent Jonathan) was not only cross-cultural in its diversity, it was in fact secured by a free-willing and free-acting electorate encumbered though by, but stridently resistant to, the canker worm of geo-politics, ethnographic and religious divide.

The incoming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is not only a child of promise; it is a child of hope. Even before it has taken off, it has brought a lot of healing to a nation only a few days ago was on a snapping point. The combination of a humble, incorruptible man of extreme modesty as president and commander-in-chief and an erudite legal luminary and a man of God and pastor as vice president is a veritable recipe for transparency and accountability in the in-coming APC dispensation.

Nor is the progressive content of this potentially messianic administration – as ably epitomised by the prodigious leadership of our very own Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Asiwaju himself—any less promising of a new evangel of good governance or what a Minna-based colleague of mine described as the Albert Einstein pitch of contemplation which trail was blazed 16 years ago in Lagos by the Jagaban himself.

It is my belief also that the advent of the Buhari-Osinbajo administration should give rest to the spirit of its political alter ego —namely June 12- by finally giving a lasting repose to the soul of the very democratic icon whose supreme sacrifice paid 22 years ago, set the nation on this irreversible path to democracy.

5 Issues Only Nigerian Gamers Understand

It is not easy being a gamer in Nigeria. The Nigerian society is not as technologically advanced as many other countries (for example, the UK and USA), which naturally means that the video-gaming industry in Nigeria is not adequately catered for. The Nigerian gamer faces a lot of unnecessary issues due to this fact, and here are some of these ordeals we have to go through-

5) Knowing that NEPA/PHCN will destroy your game/console;

NEPA/PHCN is the sole electricity provider in Nigeria which continuously fails to deliver constant electricity. It is bad enough that Nigerian gamers have only few hours everyday to play their favourite games due to a national case of epileptic power supply but the real kicker is that the unexpected “cutting and bringing-back” of electricity destroys electronics. When NEPA/PHCN brings back electricity after a period of power outage, it sometimes comes with a high voltage which can burn or blow up your gaming console and other household electronics. Even with a UPS or stabilizer you aren’t always safe- NEPA/PHCN once blew up my PS2 console with a stabilizer.

Unfortunately, there is another way that NEPA/PHCN can destroy your console- if there is a power outage during a process in your gameplay/console functions that shouldn’t be interrupted. When this happens, it at times creates corrupt data. This could be bad for your console if it happens constantly.

4) The frustration from NEPA/PHCN power outage when you are at an important stage;

Imagine playing a difficult game and you manage to clear the stage but as you are about to save, there is a power outage (NEPA/PHCN takes the light). The anger, the frustration, the butthurt! All your hard work in your game goes out the window just because you live in a country that refuses to give constant electric power supply.

There is even a worse scenario with power outages- a situation in which you are beating your friend at a competitive game (eg FIFA, PES, Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter) but then NEPA/PHCN strikes and the electricity goes off. It is an annoying situation that is only exacerbated by the smirk on the face of the friend that should have lost. I cannot count how many times some of my friends narrowly escaped defeat at PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) to my attacking prowess because of NEPA/PHCN.

3) Online gaming is hampered by poor internet services;

If you manage to get a good internet service provider with fast broadband speeds in Nigeria, your internet bill will surely be a huge monthly amount. Internet in Nigeria is an expensive service- fast broadband is cheaper in the UK than Nigeria. £30 (30 Pounds) a month in the UK will get you on many unlimited broadband plans but in Nigeria, the best such can get you is a 40 Gigabyte limited download plan. It also goes without saying that most of the internet service providers in Nigeria give slow download speeds that are not good enough for online gaming.

2) Everything is imported- from the consoles to the in-game storylines;

Nigeria does not produce games. Yes, pirated games do not count as “production”. Buying videogames, consoles and PC’s in Nigeria is a nightmare because they are more expensive due to the importation costs added on by the retailers. A problem with the importation is that most retailers in Nigeria can not give warranties on the hardware as they are just resellers rather than accredited distributors.

Going deeper into issue, one has to wonder when we will get Nigerian characters or storylines in the games we play? Yes, there are some mobile games designed by Nigerians but they are not hardcore games nor do they sell in the hundreds of thousands.

1) The negative stereotypes from “non-gaming” family and friends

Gamers generally get stereotyped as “lazy” or “immature” or “anti-social” people by non-gamers (people who don’t play videogames). It is a universal issue but in Nigeria, it is arguably 10 times worse due to the fact that the country is not technologically advanced nor is it a liberal country. Furthermore, Nigeria is a very social country where it is culturally expected for everyone to socialize. It is not like in New York or in London where everyone just stares at each other in the subway trains without talking to each other- in Nigeria, passengers chat in public transport. In short, introverted behaviour is not encouraged here.

The typical Nigerian parent will rain curses on their middle-aged child that they catch playing videogames- “See this agbaya! Your mates are getting married with children and you are playing cartoon!”.

Xenophobia: House of Rep member calls for evacuation of Nigerians in SA

The Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, has called on the Federal government to initiate moves to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Ukeje said;

“The Federal Government of Nigeria should rise up to the occasion by having contingency plans to evacuate Nigerians within 24 hours to avoid us losing our citizens to these attacks. It is expedient to think of where all Nigerians can gather within 24 hours for safety either in our embassy or mission for the safety of our citizens,” she said.

Also speaking, chairperson of the House committee on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa condemned the attacks and said the House of Representative members will move a motion in its next plenary session to discuss the attacks

Man Indicted In USA For Drug Deal Elected Senator In Nigeria-Report

LAGOS, Nigeria - A man indicted in America for allegedly smuggling heroin, in a court case that was the basis for the TV hit "Orange Is The New Black," has been elected a senator in Nigeria.

Buruji Kashamu was little known before he returned home in 2003 from Britain despite a U.S. extradition order to become a major financier of President Goodluck Jonathan's party.

Election results posted late Wednesday identify Kashamu as a senator-elect in southwest Ogun state. Opponents are challenging his victory in court, saying ballots were rigged.

Kashamu, 56, hung up the phone twice when the AP called for comment about the drug case on Thursday. Kashamu has said he is "a clean businessman" and that the 1998 indictment by a grand jury in the Northern District of Illinois for conspiracy to import and distribute heroin in the United States is a case of mistaken identity.

He has said Chicago prosecutors really want the dead brother he closely resembles.

A British court refused a U.S. extradition request in 2003 over uncertainty about Kashamu's identity. Chicago Judge Richard Posner thought otherwise when he refused a motion to dismiss Kashamu's case last year.

A dozen people were long ago tried and jailed in the case, including American Piper Kerman, whose memoir about her jail time became the Netflix hit "Orange Is The New Black." Kerman's book never identified Kashamu by name, but there is a West African drug kingpin whom she

calls "Alhaji," meaning one who has completed the haj or pilgrimage to Mecca.

A Nigerian federal court last year ordered Kashamu's extradition, an order upheld by an appeals court. But Nigeria's government has not extradited him.

That failure caused Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, to warn that "drug barons ... will buy candidates, parties and eventually buy power or be in power themselves."

Jonathan's perceived protection of Kashamu was a factor that led Obasanjo to defect from the ruling party before recent elections to the opposition that won most votes in Ogun, the home state of Kashamu and Obasanjo.

Kashamu is suing Obasanjo for libel for stating that Kashamu is a fugitive from U.S. justice. He had won a court order halting publication of Obasanjo's autobiography but a judge this week rescinded it, saying Kashamu had misled the court.

Obasanjo's lawyer argued that the truth cannot be libel.

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator who had people jailed for littering in the 1980s, has promised to fight corruption, has many politicians fearful in a country where corruption is endemic.

Man Who Shot South African Lucky Dube Says He Thought He Was A Nigerian

NEWS NUGGET - Man who shot South African Lucky Dube says he thought he was a Nigerian.

About an hour after they pumped two bullets into Lucky Dube, the alleged killers returned to where the reggae superstar lay dead to see if any of the bystanders recognised them.

This was the chilling evidence of a state witness, who also revealed on Tuesday that the two men on trial for the murder didn't recognise him and thought he was a Nigerian.

Question- So if Lucky Dube was a Nigerian living in South Africa he deserves to die?

Do you feel our Government have opened up Nigerian market to foreign investors with no protection of Nigerians in same business who can't compete?

Are South African business policies as liberal as ours or more protective of their own?

DSTV went ahead to increase their rates regardless of court judgement. Can they do this in South Africa?

I'm not an economist but should these companies be compelled to retain a certain amount of their profit in Nigeria unlike what we have now where every kobo of their profit is taken back to develop their country from the sweat of Nigerians. We can only speculate how much of Nigeria's money was used in sponsoring the world cup in South Africa.

They come with give employment to a few Nigerian, rip us off with profit and take the money out to develop their country. This has to CHANGE.

While Nigeria has opened up her market the South Africans are killing her citizens in return.

God bless Nigeria.

Was He Wrong To Have Rescued Her From Hot Beating?

Lemme make it short.

Went to a friend's place on Tuesday to watch Real-Madrid match. After a while,I heard a knock at the door,my friend went to open,I started hearing noise,on getting to the door,I saw my friend beating his girlfriend. I had to ask,he said the girlfriend came unannounced, and want to force herself in,which resulted to fracas.

I settled them, and went drop the girl in her hostel in unilag, went I came back to my friend's place,he was shouting that why should I go drop the girl off to her hostel, that I should have left her outside, when he locked the door against her. That my loyalty should be to him.

My question is this, was I wrong to have dropped her? I went to drop her because she was crying, bruised, and her sandal was torn.it will be unfair to leave her outside.

How can I help her out of the toxic relationship, without being seen as a traitor,or back-stabber by my friend, because its obvious my friend didn't like her at all, she's the one forcing herself on him.

Imagine after the whole beating, while driving her to school, she was pleading with me to beg my friend for her,I was like WTF in my mind, but didn't say anything, that I will get back to her.

IROKOtv Signs Partnership Deal With Internet Giant, Netflix

We're going places, people. wink

In 2013, a FastCompany feature piece on Jason Njoku of IROKOtv said, “Iroko’s Jason Njoku Is Creating The Next Netflix In Nigeria“. Maybe that’s what got Netflix’s attention, maybe not. But that piece has certainly proved correct today.

According to IROKOtv CEO, Jason Njoku, IROKOtv has signed a deal with Netflix to support their launch of a dedicated African section, on Netflix.

Netflix, the world’s leading internet TV service, famous for shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, quite recently featured Nigerian movie, October 1st and now, courtesy of IROKOtv, they will feature a larger assortment of African content.

While the terms of the deal are not clear yet, it is a favorable distribution model for IROKOtv as it continues in its quest to bring Internet TV and African content together.

Why this move? Asides from the fact that Netflix has 57m subscribers globally, and will definitely improve the visibility of Nollywood, Jason says, “This is something I yearned for with YouTube so many years ago, and was ultimately the reason I created IROKOtv.”

I think about competition in many dimensions. When I burn bridges to focus, they burn. IROKO’s focus is on Android, super encoded and compressed downloads in Lagos. We have established a beach head. We want to win Lagos. Scratch that. We need to win Lagos. I am betting the entire company on it. We are bringing Internet TV to Africa. Lagos first. City by city, thereafter. We are still trying to establish the right price, access (downloads vs streaming) and content mix to drive this mandate. African movies on Netflix has little impact on that, remember, and I have said this numerous times. – Jason Njoku, CEO of IROKOtv

IROKOtv has recently been making ambitious moves like this to put Nollywood on the radar, Techloy’s Loy Okezie certainly predicted how audacious it could get. Two days ago, IROKOtv also signed a deal with African pay TV platform, StarTimes to launch two brand new linear TV channels, IROKO Play and IROKO Plus to launch on the 1st of May, 2015.

Jason ended his blog post with the quote, “iROKOtv is not the Netflix of Africa.“? Do I agree? Maybe. They’re certainly poised to do better things for African content than Netflix would
