Ashes And Death: What Boko Haram Left Behind In Baga - BBC (Photos)

The Nigerian military took us to towns taken back from Boko Haram in the north-east.

Some are almost impossible to reach by road because the insurgents have blown up bridges.

From one town to another, Boko Haram fighters have left their imprint of destruction - the charred remains of market places, homes, government buildings and farms.

Signboards have been painted over in black and replaced with Boko Haram insignia and inscriptions in Arabic.

"Thank you! Thank you!" a group of women chant as they praise the soldiers who reclaimed their town, Doron Baga, from Boko Haram.

They are the few people we found in the area. Most others fled after possibly the worst insurgent attack yet in the region.

It has been suggested that during the January attack, Boko Haram killed hundreds, possibly more - and then set fire to dozens of buildings.

'Those bastards kill men'

Now the town is deserted. At the main market area, blackened-out shells have replaced what would have been busy shops.

Mangled motorcycles litter the streets, their tyres blown out. Decomposing bodies lie by the roadside and fill the air with the stench of death.

A group of women take shade under a tree away from the scorching heat. "Boko Haram fighters killed my sister," one tells me.

"We attempted to leave three times for Maiduguri but the militants threatened to shoot us. They hardly fed us and we were very hungry. But when the soldiers liberated us, they gave us some food."

Despite the successes of the military, many of the reclaimed towns are empty. Only small groups of women, children and the elderly can be found.

Abubakar Ali is one of the few young men around. He had a fractured leg and could not run away when insurgents attacked Monguno town.

"My grandmother hid me under the bed," he says. "They don't touch women, especially old women, but those bastards kill men. They came searching but they didn't find any man in the house so they left."

Even Mubi town, a major commercial centre in Adamawa State, is largely deserted, except for the troops on patrol.

"I would plead with the people of Mubi," says the town's traditional Muslim leader, Emir Abubakar Ahmadu. "Come back home so that we develop Mubi more than ever before."

With widespread destruction, the region is in need of massive rehabilitation - far more than what the residents can do on their own if they return.

There are murmurings within the military that soldiers have been left to do the work other government agencies should be taking on.

There is also the question of whether the people should return to restore a semblance of normality or whether they should remain displaced until the military completes its operations.

There are regular reports of troops getting killed or maimed by mines planted by the insurgents.

Boko Haram fighters are known to surround their locations with hidden bombs. Some soldiers showed me a stretch of about 20m (60ft) where they say they detected 29 improvised explosive devices.

The army says such dirty tactics complicate the fight. This has not dampened the spirits of the troops.

They have recorded major successes recently, reclaiming many of the towns taken by the militants. This has elicited as much praise as it has criticism over why it took so long to act.

The military's gains were achieved in just a few weeks, while Boko Haram has been tormenting the region for the past six years.

The successes also came when Chad, Niger and Cameroon joined in the fight against the Islamist insurgents.

The subsequent plaudits these neighbours received proved embarrassing for Nigeria, the outshined regional powerhouse.

Nigeria's military spokesman, Maj Gen Chris Olukolade, denied reports of tension between members of the anti-Boko Haram coalition.

"Many of the opinions out there that seem not to be complimentary about participating colleagues are definitely not the positions of the countries," he said.

"They are positions of individual officials. We don't expect it to affect the co-ordination within the force."

At the Multinational Joint Task Force base in Baga near Lake Chad, only Nigerian troops are present.

They seem motivated, regardless of the problems at the diplomatic level. The soldiers promise not to let Nigeria lose its territory under their watch.

With new supplies of equipment, as well as fresh combat strategies from their superiors, morale is high on the frontline.

Federal Government reduces electricity tariff by over 50%

The Federal Government has announced the reduction in electricity tariff by half. Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sam Amadi, who made the announcement in Abuja today March 17th, said after a review of the tariffs being paid by Nigerians, the commission agreed to slash it by half. The reduction takes effect from the end of March.

He said the commission agreed to remove the Multi-year tariff order, MYTO 2.1 following multiple petitions and complains from Nigerians especially members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria who said inclusion of the MYTO 2.1 caused them to spend more on their businesses and in some cases loss of jobs.

“The Commission also invited the Chief executive Officers of the distribution companies to the hearing to respond to the case of the consumer groups. Furthermore, the Commission reviewed the technical and financial assumption of MYTO 2.1. The review shows that the major underlying cause of the skyrocketing increase in the tariff is the huge Aggregate Technical, Commercial and Collection (ATC&C) losses, which are passed through to consumers. In some DISCOs ATC&C losses increased tariff by as much as 80-103%. “…

It is the responsibility of the DISCOs to collect their revenue from their customers. Failure to do so should not be a penalty to customers who pay their bills. It is clear that removing the collection losses will lead to lower tariffs for consumers. The removal of collection losses from customer tariff has reduced tariff by more than 50 percent in some places. Please note that the reduction does not affect the CBN facility and its repayment.

“Therefore, On Monday, March 9, 2015 the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued a new order to the effect that henceforth collection loss, which is defined as the ‘amount billed but not collected’, will not be automatically passed on to consumers of electricity. Consequently, the collection loss for all DISCOs is set at zero. It is now the responsibility of DISCOs to convince the regulator of any exceptional circumstances for such loss to be passed to the consumers,” Amadi said in a statement.

Tinubu Warns Jonathan Against Fani-Kayode

Former Lagos State governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to be wary of former Aviation Minister and the Director of Media and Publicity, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode.

Speaking on Monday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Media, Mr. Sunday Dare and titled: ‘Femi Fani-Kayode is an Epistle of Deceit as he Continues to Battle the Truth,’ Tinubu said Fani-Kayode could say anything against anybody for as long as he gets power.

The APC leader was reacting to claim by Fani-Kayode that government is not misusing the vehicles of state power to oppress the opposition, backing his claims with quotes from the Bible and claiming that APC leaders are wicked.

“The things that FFK (Fani-Kayode) said to us about Jonathan in private will remain private. But Jonathan would be wise to watch his back whenever he is dealing with this bugle for hire. The man has changed position so many times that he must feel like a tired chameleon on a spinning wheel of many colors. He is confused what colour he should be. The only thing he knows is that he will soon change hue again.

According to Tinubu: “Those of us in the APC know him for what he is. It was roughly a year ago that FFK tried to join the APC. In attempting to integrate himself, he spewed endless venom against his current boss. Because we knew him, we held him at arm’s length.

“The man is willing to say anything for a taste of power and to wiggle his way into some office or another. When he saw the door closed to him, he predictably bolted. His exit remains our gain. History will mark it as a key point in the development of the APC.

“If you doubt what I say, review carefully FFK’s statement on why he returned to the PDP, it is an epistle of deceit. Examine its allegations. He lists several purported statements made by APC figures that allegedly soured him on the party.

“His allegations against the party members are inaccurate. Here, the dates of the alleged statements are more than the purported content that are important. By his own admission, every alleged statement he attributed to an APC figure took place before FFK tried to join the party. A consummate media hound, he must have been aware of the so-called offensive statements prior to seeking space under the APC banner.

“The statements did not deter him from joining. They also were not the reason he departed. He left because, although a fledging party, we were wise enough not to give him a position of importance. He did not leave because he feared the APC would lead him astray. He left because we did not give him the chance to lead us astray.

“Soon enough, Fani-Kayode will discover that in the new Nigeria and in the responsible government to come, his tawdry skills will not be required. He can then go home and look in the mirror to see what he has made of himself.”

He claimed that Fani-Kayode’s antics of deceit is aimed at deflecting public attention away from the dirty tricks and tactics the government is set to deploy in order to oppress and intimidate key APC figures during these final days before the March 28 election.

“FFK should proceed carefully with the use to which he puts his tongue. Not every word a person speaks is a lark that evaporates the moment after its expression. FFK ropes his tongue in danger when he, of all people, uses the Bible to ridicule others. He must be careful for he does not mock man. He mocks a Higher Power and should be wary of his excesses in this regard.

“When FFK looks in the mirror he thinks he sees a man who should be Pope. Instead, what he should see is a man guilty of more public lies than any Nigerian of his generation. Perhaps FFK can delude himself because his memory is short while his ambition is long. His hope is that our memories are even shorter. Here he is wrong again.”

Gov. Rochas Okorocha Says Buhari is Nigeria’s Nelson Mandela

Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has likened the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) to late Dr. Nelson Mandela of South Africa and urged Nigerians to give him the mandate to steer and stabilise the ship of state.

Addressing Imo State indigenes who gathered on the banner of Imo State Towns Development Association Lagos (ISTDAL) at a colourful reception for him at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Okorocha said at 72, the only thing uppermost in Buhari’s mind was to clear the rot in the polity and move on.

The governor, who spoke in Igbo language, according to Vanguard, said if the South-East Zone wanted to produce the president in the immediate future, the people must elect Buhari. Reason:

“Buhari is the Mandela of our time. At 72, what does he want? He will do one term, fix the country and move on and then power will be come back to the South. When power rotates to the South, the South-East will have it in 2019 because the South-West has had it through Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the South-South through Dr Goodluck Jonathan.’’

However, he said the South-East would not be in the stead to produce the president if they did not get their politics right by voting for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he claimed had marginalised the South-East. According to him,

‘’under President Jonathan administration, the South-East is not among the five topmost positions in the country (President, Vice President, Senate President, Chief Justice of the Federation, Speaker of the House of Representatives), does not have any of the service chiefs, Inspector General of Police, Controller of Customs, Immigration, Civil Defence, etc. We only have controller of Prisons. This is not fair.’’

Nigerian Government Cuts Electricity Tariff By 50%

The Nigerian government has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs by half.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday announced the immediate review of electricity tariffs by about 50 per cent.

The Chairman of the Commission, Sam Amadi, who announced the review in Abuja, said the reduction, which takes effect from the end of March, followed the regulatory agency’s decision to remove collection losses from customer tariff under the multi-year tariff order.

Mr. Amadi said following the approval of the multi-year tariff order, MYTO 2.1 in January 1, 2015, the Commission had received several complaints and petitions against the decision, which resulted in astronomical increases in tariff across the different consumer categories.

He noted particularly the petition by industrial and commercial consumers under the auspices of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, which demanded a drastic reduction of their tariffs.

The two categories of consumers had cited the negative impact of their increased tariffs, which they said were threatening their businesses, leading to massive job losses.

Following the review of the petitions, Mr. Amadi said the Commission conducted public hearings to gather evidence from all consumer classes on the affordability of the new tariff.

Again, he said the Commission had

consulted with the Chief Executive Officers of the Distribution Companies before deciding to intervene by reviewing the tariffs.

Besides, the Chairman said the Commission also decided to review the technical and financial assumptions of multi-year tariff order 2.1.

The reviews, he noted, were in line with the provisions of the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act 2005 and the Business Rules of the Commission’s mandate, which allow such a decision on a petition by an interested party within 60 days.

He said findings from the various reviews showed that the major cause of the spiralling consumer tariffs was the huge aggregate technical commercial and collection losses.

Some distribution companies have

complained that the collection losses, which are passed to consumers, raised the final tariffs by as much as an average of 80 and 103 per cent.

“The Commission has been listening to consumers’ complaints and taking full account of the impact of the high tariff on consumers and the Nigerian economy,”

Mr. Amadi said.

“Therefore, the Commission has reviewed the basis of the MYTO 2.1 assumptions and has determined that it is inappropriate to transfer to consumers collection losses that are controllable by the DISCOs (distribution companies),” he announced.

10 Signs You May Have Kidney Disease

Leslie Spry, M.D., FACP

Most don't know it -- Over 90 percent of people with signs of kidney disease are unaware of it.

March is National Kidney Month, and one of the best ways to observe this health awareness month is by getting tested if you're at risk for kidney disease. Major risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, a family history of kidney failure and being age 60 or older.

While the only way to know for sure if you have kidney disease is to get tested, there are a number of physical signs. Sometimes people attribute these physical symptoms of kidney disease to other conditions. This is because those with kidney disease tend not to experience symptoms until the very late stages, when the kidneys are failing or when there are large amounts of protein in the urine.

Here are 10 possible signs you may have kidney disease:

You're more tired, have less energy or are having trouble concentrating. A severe decrease in kidney function can lead to a buildup of toxins and impurities in the blood. This can cause you to feel tired, weak and can make it hard to concentrate. Another complication of kidney disease is anemia, which can also cause weakness and fatigue.

You're having trouble sleeping. When the kidneys aren't filtering properly, toxins stay in the blood rather than leaving the body through the urine. This can make it difficult to sleep. There is also a link between obesity and chronic kidney disease, and sleep apnea is more common in those with chronic kidney disease.

You have dry and itchy skin. Healthy kidneys do many important jobs. They remove wastes and extra fluid from your body, help make red blood cells, keep bones strong and work to maintain the right amount of minerals in your blood. Dry and itchy skin can be a sign of the mineral and bone disease that often accompanies advanced kidney disease, when the kidneys are no longer able to keep the right balance of minerals and nutrients in the blood.

You feel the need to urinate more often. If you feel the need to urinate more often, especially at night, this can be a sign of kidney disease. When the kidneys' filters are damaged, it can cause an increase in the urge to urinate. Frequent urination can also be a sign of a urinary infection or enlarged prostate in men.

You see blood in your urine. Healthy kidneys typically keep blood cells in the body when filtering wastes from the blood to create urine. However, when the kidneys have been damaged, these blood cells can start to "leak" out into the urine. In addition to signaling kidney disease, blood in the urine can be indicative of tumors, kidney stones or an infection.

Some Myths About Alcohol

Since drinking is such a popular pastime, it makes

sense that there are a lot of legends, assumptions

and myths about alcohol out there. What's true and

What isn't? Surprisingly, even things that might feel

or seem true from experience are actually just

myths.

Myth: Drugs are a bigger problem than alcohol.

FACT: Although alcohol use is legal and more socially acceptable, it is still classified as a drug. Alcohol has claimed the lives of more young people than cocaine, heroin, and every other illegal drug combined. About 18 million Americans are addicted to alcohol or have alcohol abuse issues. Furthermore, alcohol is the No. 1 drug problem of today's youth.

Myth: A combination of beer, wine and liquor will

make you more drunk than only drinking one

type of alcohol.

FACT: Alcohol is alcohol. Your blood alcohol content

(BAC - the percent of alcohol in your blood) is what

determines how drunk you are. Not the flavors you

selected.

Myth: A cold shower, cup of coffee, sleep, or

making yourself throw up will sober you up.

FACT: Only time will get you sober. In general, it

takes about one hour for your body to eliminate one

average drink. A cold shower will not sober you up

and might cause you to go into shock if you are very

drunk. Coffee contains a stimulant drug (caffeine)

and will make you feel awake, but it will not remove

the alcohol from your body. If you has a lot to drink

before you go to sleep, you could still have alcohol in your body when you wake up and be over the legal driving limit the next morning. And finally, self-

induced vomiting might get rid of some of the alcohol that has not yet been absorbed by your body, but most of it will already be in your bloodstream and causing yourself to be sick can be dangerous.

Myth: Someone who has had too much to drink

will look drunk

FACT: The way someone looks can be misleading.

One drink can impair one's judgement and ability to

drive. Judgment is the first thing affected when

someone has been drinking - motor skills are the

second.

Myth: Hard liquor is more dangerous than beer,

wine or wine coolers

FACT: A 12-ounce can of beer, a five-ounce glass of

wine and a 12-ounce wine cooler contain the same

amount of alcohol and the same intoxication

potential as 1.5 ounces of liquor. All of these will

affect an unborn baby.

Myth: Alcohol affects you less if you eat meat or a

high-carbohydrate meal with it.

FACT: Eating a meal while drinking alcohol does slow

down your body's absorption of alcohol, but it does

not prevent it. You will only get drunk slower.

Myth: Alcohol will not make me gain weight.

FACT: Alcohol is a heavy source of calories, which

can inadvertently cause weight gain. The following

table shows drink portions with their approximate

number of calories:

Alcohol Calorie Chart

Serving

12 oz.

light beer

Myth: One or two drinks will not affect driving

ability

FACT: Alcohol is a depressant drug and therefore

slows down reaction time and affects judgement with just one drink. The effects of alcohol not only depend on the amount consumed, but also on the user's past drinking experience, the way in which the alcohol is consumed, and a person's feelings or mood. The only safe way to drive is sober.

Myth: If a person can abstain for weeks or even

months between drinking bouts, he or she does

not have a drinking problem.

FACT: A person does not have to drink every day or

every week to have a problem with alcohol. The effect of alcohol on a person's home, friends, social life, school life, job, leisure time, medical needs, and

financial responsibilites need to be considered. If

sonemone's drinking affects even one of these areas, the person should consider receiving help to keep it from causing more problems.

Myth: Alcohol improves sexual performance.

FACT: Although a small amount of alcohol may make

you feel less inhibited, anything more will decrease a man's ability to maintain an Attention and both

genders' ability to achieve orgasm. As a depressant

drug, alcohol numbs nerve endings and decreases

lubrication while also affecting rational decisions and judgement.

Myth: There are no benefits to drinking alcohol

FACT: In moderation (1 drink per day for women, 2

drinks per day for men), it has been suggested that

alcohol can have some health benefits such as being

protective against heart disease and diabetes.

However, excess use of alcohol can have negative

health effects, and it is recommended that those who do not drink do not start to gain these benefits

without first speaking to a doctor.

NCC May Revoke 115 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Operating In Nigeria

EXCEPT their current operational status are known, about 115 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating in the country risk being declared illegal operators by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC). The revocation of their operating instrument by the regulatory body may be carried out on the heels of the expiration of licenses belonging to about 24 others before the end of the year. The expired licenses are expected to be renewed before the end of the year.

The service providers are, by the provision of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA 2003), licensed for a period of five years before they are renewed.

Though, Nigeria has about 184 ISPs, 115 of them are expected to update the commission with their current business contacts/addresses before the end of March, in order to ensure seamless correspondences.

Besides, 22 other ISPs are to renew their licences in 2016; 18 in 2017 and by 2018 and 2019, 21 and 20 others are to renew theirs respectively. The 184 ISPs operate in different parts of the country and have helped in making Internet services readily available to individuals, businesses and governments.

Through their various activities, they have also helped in deepening Internet penetration, from less than 20 million to about 78 million people online, in the past five years.

Apart from the ISPs that are to be renewed in 2016, three Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operators would also renew their 15-year old licences.

The GSM operators include MTN, Airtel and Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTEL), the mobile arm of the Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL). Of the three companies, only MTEL has been dormant in its operations, but the just concluded privatization activities for its turnaround by the National Council for Privatization (NCP), may as well bring it back to life. The renewal will allow the ISPs and the GSM companies to be able to continuously provide services to their subscribers.

As at press time, it was still very difficult to establish how much the renewal will generate for the regulator, but it was learnt that the exercise would offer another stream of revenue to government.

Recall that each of the GSM operators paid a licensing fee of $285 million (about N51.3 billion currently) to pick their licences, following the historic 2001 Digital Mobile Licence (DML) auction, conducted by the country’s telecoms regulator.

Specifically, the three operators picked their licences on February 9, 2001 and they are expected to apply for renewal by February 18, 2016. Other GSM operators such as Globacom and Etisalat will renew their licences in August 2017 and March 2022, respectively.

According to the Director, Policy Competition and Economic Analysis at NCC, Ms. Josephine Amuwa in an advertorial, those 115 ISPs are reminded of their licensing obligations with respect to information pursuant of sections 64 to 66 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.

Amuwa said the commission might be compelled to declare those who do not respond as illegal operators.

Investigations revealed that most of the ISPs refused to be connected to the country’s Internet Exchange Point (IXP), which to a greater extent has continued to make Internet services costly and even as services continue to be erratic.

A reliable source in the industry told The Guardian that some ISPs in the country still depend on Internet hubs that are located outside the country, in places like the United States of America; Israel and some parts of Europe.

According to him, this means that Internet traffic from Nigeria goes directly to these foreign hubs, thereby causing serious capital flight in form of transit charges paid to foreign ISPs by some of their Nigerian counterparts.

According to findings, only 37 of the 184 IT service providers in Nigeria are currently connected to the IXPs. The country currently has three IXPs, situated in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja, with plans to commission two new ones in Kano and Enugu before the end of the year at the estimated cost of N35 million each.

An IXP is a physical infrastructure through which ISPs exchange Internet traffic between their networks (autonomous systems).

The function of an IXP is to reduce the portion of an ISP’s traffic, which must be delivered via their upstream transit providers, thereby reducing the average per-bit delivery cost of their service.

Analysts have stressed that one of the most cost effective ways of managing Internet traffic in any country is to ensure it is kept within the nation to avoid the global imbalance in the global telecommunications connectivity.

Speaking on the issue, the President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Lanre Ajayi said majority of the ISPs, especially the big players are connected to the exchange. He said that due to the vicissitudes of the business environment, larger percentages of them are no more in operation.

He said there was need for government to create a favourable environment for business growth, adding that it was important to woo investors into the economy, “especially now that the country plans to develop its broadband potential”

To Kehinde Aluko, a telecoms expert, the ISPs may continue to shun the local exchanges because of the country’s under-developed distribution networks, which include national long distance fibre, metro fibre and last mile connectivity, which constitute a huge challenge, especially because of the cost implications.

Woman Dies After Spending First Night With Married Lover She Met On Facebook (Photo)

Another Facebook lover has died in Lagos a few years after Cynthia Osokogwu, the daughter of a retired miliitary officer, was allegedly lured to Lagos by her Facebook lover, drugged, raped and murdered in Festac Town.

The latest victim, identfied as Adekemi Faboro, who teaches at a private nursery and primary school, in Ojota, died in Ogba area of Lagos last weekend while on a date with her married Facebook lover, Christopher Ezekiel, for the first time.

Sources told P.M.NEWS that Ezekiel, a father of two, came from Ibadan, Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, to visit Adekemi in Lagos State, for the first time on the fateful day, after he met her on Facebook.

Investigation by PM.NEWS revealed that trouble started for Ezekiel, an engineering staff of an electrical company based in Shagamu and who resides at 8, Orelope Street, Ibadan, when Adekemi started coughing severely at mid night in her home, at 5, Folorunsho Street, off Ajayi Road, Ogba.

And when the situation was getting out of hand, tenants who suspected foul play, rushed her to Ifako General Hospital where she died.

Ezekiel was subsequently arrested by the police at Pen Cinema Police Station while the corpse of Adekemi was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

The cause of her sudden death could not be ascertained at the time of this report.

P.M.NEWS findings also revealed that Ezekiel’s wife works with Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in Ibadan.

When P.M.NEWS visited Pen Cinema Police Station, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of the station, Mr. Achinyan Z. Fera, a Chief Superintendent of Police was said to have gone to Area ‘G’ Police Command, Ogba to meet with the Area Commander

However, a source who craved for anonymity at the station confirmed the arrest of Ezekiel, adding that investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, some of Adekemi’s friends on Facebook have been mourning her, with some expressing shock over her sudden death.

Joyce Ante said: “May the Lord comfort your aged parents, the entire family and Calvary church.”

Olatimehin Ebenezer said: “I was shocked about your death RIP (ORE), while Olu Blues said: “My best friend ever, it’s come as a surprise for me to believe this. Can someone tell me this is not true, or am I dreaming? R.I.P.”

Omosunle Mary mourned: “My sister, it is unbelivable. We love you sister Kemi omo Faboro ‘Iya Ido’ but God loves you more.”

“Your demise is so incredible, I can’t believe it, but I believe you are resting in the bosom of the Lord,” said Ayandeji Opeyemi.

Soyode Famuwagun Elizabeth said: “I will miss you my beautiful sister. Rest in God’s bosom because he loves you very much.”

Ante Ruth wrote on her Facebook wall: “Oh my God!!!! why did Aunty Kemi have to leave so soon? This is unbelievable and so sad. My only comfort is that you knew Christ and served him to the end. Hope you are enjoying your new home right there with the Father. Continue to rest in His bosom because he loves you more than we do. RIP Aunty Kemooo.”

LASU Workers Cripple Convocation Ceremony, Chase VC Out

Members of staff of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, yesterday protested what they called bad administrative style of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, chasing Reghim out of campus alongside other principal officers.

The staffers under the various trade unions in the institution, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, listed victimisation of staff, non-payment of outstanding salary arrears, violation of due process, ruining staff image in newspapers, withdrawal of PhD certificates of some lecturers, denial of letters for elected Governing Council and Senate members, as some of their grouses against the authority, thus warranting the protest.

Aside the academic and administrative activities that were paralysed in the process, both the Senate meeting and Coconut Breaking festival as parts of ongoing convocation ceremony could not also hold.

National Mirror gathered that the aggrieved workers started the protest around 7.45am, blocking both the main gate on Badagry Expressway and Iba gate with vehicles, despite the presence of armed policemen and campus security officers, to prevent vehicular movement in and out of the campus.

PDP Chairman, Executives Decamp To APC In Edo State.

The Chairman and eleven members of the executive council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday, decamped to the All Progressives Congress in Ukpato Ward, Orhiomwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

Receiving the PDP decampees at the Government House, the State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said the exit of the executives has further reduced decimated the PDP in the state.

He said: “your journey is coming at a very strategic period. When the PDP postponed the elections, they wanted to buy time but as they buy time, they are losing people and as they lose people and they are losing more votes.

“I believe that God has a purpose for touching everybody’s heart who have joined the movement for change because people like you who live in the rural areas know much more than anyone else the pains of poverty, the pains of the failure of the Nigeria State.

He said, “When we buy you a transformer, there is no light. When light comes, the fees the community is asked to pay is more than the entire income of the community. Other than what the state government is doing in Orhionmwon, there is no federal presence in the community.

“The Federal Government has spent 52% of our earnings on your behalf over the past 16 years and you cannot show one thing they have done.

We haven’t fixed all the problems but we have shown that it is possible to begin to address the problems.

This is why in Orhionmwon we are building schools besides the long road that we are doing from Ugoneki to Urhonigbe, also we have done roads in Igbanke and all the adjoining communities.

We are currently working on the road in Abudu and several others.

“We have also done several red roof schools in several communities, an industrial borehole at Iguododo that will supply water to all the environs just to say but a few.

We haven’t fixed all the problems but every day we are doing something new, connecting the people through networks of roads from one community to another, supplying transformers even though they may not enjoy it because the federal government has not delivered power and that is why we say unless we fix the head, you will not enjoy the full benefit of it.”

Governor Oshiomhole however assured the defectors of equal privileges in the party adding that they will not regret their actions and decision to join forces with the All Progressives Congress.

Earlier, the leader of the defectors and Chairman, Ukpato Ward, Mr. Vincent Awekhor on behalf of other members of the executive applauded the leadership style of the Comrade Governor and his people oriented projects in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

Mr. Awekhor said, “We have watched political activities not only in the state but the federal and have concluded that Nigerians need a change and the change is coming from only one party which is the APC and because we do not want to be left behind, we have decided today to join the moving train that will bring the desired change to Nigeria.

“We’ve got the international break coming up which I hope will give our medical team the chance to work on Ben’s rehab and we will reassess later.”

Welsh goalkeeper, Boaz Myhill, who replaced Foster at the Hawthorns on Saturday, will deputise during the 31-year-old’s absence, with young goalkeeper Jack Rose expected to step up to the bench.

Foster could return in time for Liverpool’s visit to the Midlands but is certainly ruled out of this weekend’s visit to Manchester City. Card Reader Jammers: Opposition Have Lost Control Of Their Senses, Says Fani-Kayode.

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO, has accused the All Progressives Congress of “coming up with a different lie every day of the week”.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the Campaign Organization, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who reacted to the opposition party’s allegation that the Federal Government and the PDP were planning to render the smart card readers ineffective on Election Day, said the allegation was wild and baseless.

We had earlier reported that the APC spokesman, Lai Mohammed, on Monday raised the alarm over the plan by the Goodluck Jonathan Administration and the PDP to render card readers ineffective on Election Day, with a view to justifying their fears about the use of the device and ultimately to scuttle the polls.

Mr. Mohammed further claimed that to this end, the PDP-led federal government had contracted an Israeli, who has developed card reader jammers, which would be air freighted to the country next week.

Reacting, Mr. Fani-Kayode said the Federal Government and the PDP did not have any plans to sabotage the card readers and did not need to indulge in such “shady, sinister and tardy practices”.

“We view this wild and baseless allegation with amusement”, Mr. Fani-Kayode. “Frankly the APC deserves to be pitied. So desperate are they for power that their latest strategy is to come up with a different lie for every day of the week.

“They have lost control of their senses; their imagination has gone wild and they see things that are simply not there.

“This latest allegation is absurd; it is not rooted in truth; it is irrational and it is illogical. It is clear that the opposition are already preparing the grounds and making excuses for their own defeat.

“They are running scared and they are already preparing the minds of their supporters for their imminent failure at the polls.

Ex Banker And Undergraduates Arrested For Armed Robbery (Photo)

A 32-year-old ex banker, Edet Ekuno, and his three undergraduate cohorts from the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Hope Okon, Sunday Samiga and Isaiah Unagbon, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for armed robbery and kidnapping.

Ekuno was the leader of the gang which he formed after he was laid off by a new generation bank for involving in some shady deals, while Okon is an ND2 Computer Engineering student.

The gang was arrested at the D2 Hotel in the Ojodu-Berger area, where they were reportedly perfecting plans to kidnap a businessman in Magodo Estate on March 7, 2015.

Two locally-made pistols and 18 live cartridges were said to have been recovered from the gang.

The former banker confessed to the police that he joined the gang in 2012 to kidnap one of his neighbours working with Chevron.

Hear him:

"I was laid off by the bank I used to work for. I am also an estate agent and the music minister in a church.

I don’t just know what came over me. The 2012 operation involved a neighbour, but it was not successful. The man shouted for help and we fled with his money and phones.

We were five in that operation. I was given N20,000 from the proceeds. The Magodo operation was my second attempt."

27-year-old Okon said he made N800,000 from one of his operations after collecting N5 million ransom from the family of a woman they kidnapped, adding that he had been in Lagos for about two weeks monitoring their target’s movements.

"In 2010, in Akwa Ibom, we kidnapped a woman whose daughter is a medical doctor. We released her after her family paid N5m.

My share was N800,000. I used it to keep poultry, but it later collapsed due to poor management.

I was about to go back to Akwa Ibom having exhausted the N50,000 on me when we were arrested."
