Read What President Jonathan Said He Will Become After Leaving Office On May 29

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said his major commitment after leaving office on May 29 will be to engage religious and ethnic leaders across the country on the need to allow peace to reign.

He said he took the decision because of his strong belief that Nigerians can only practise their different religions in an atmosphere of peace.

Jonathan disclosed this shortly after he was presented with the 2015 Epitome of Peace Award by the Field Superintendent of The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Federal Capital Territory Field, Apostle John Buzu, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President said the award, which was in recognition of the step he took after the March 28 Presidential election, which had led to peace in the country, had further spurred him into doing more for the country.

He said he would work hard to reduce religious and racial discrimination in the country after leaving office, expressing the hope that people would be ready to join him in the crusade.

Jonathan said, “To whom much is given, much is expected. For you to honour me today, you have given me another mandate to work harder to ensure that we as Nigerians continue to live in peace.

“One thing I have decided I will do after leaving office is to be talking to faithful of all religions: Christians, Muslims and other religions, on the need for Nigerians to live in peace.

“This is because when there is crisis in any part of the country, nobody can practise his own religion. If there is crisis anywhere, people cannot go to the mosque, they cannot go to the church.

“We need peace in this country, no matter our religious persuasion or belief. That will be one of my main commitments when I leave office: to reduce discrimination in this country based on religious divides or ethnicity. I believe I will have so many apostles that will follow me to do that.”

While thanking the church for considering him fit for the award, the President observed that a number of Nigerians make extraordinary contributions to national development daily, but they go unnoticed.

He added that a few of them, including himself, are a bit luckier because their contributions are noticed.

“I sincerely thank you for considering me fit for this honour that you have just bestowed on me.

“All of us do a number of things everyday. People have saved this country, we don’t even know some of them or what they did but some people are a bit luckier that their actions are noticed and sometimes rewarded.

“You have also noticed me with my little contribution, not just because I am the President of the country, but because of an action I took that you believe saved lives and you are honouring me,” he added.

Jonathan who was presented with a white shirt and suit, which the church said connote peace, a medal as well as a plaque, said the items would be displayed conspicuously in a Presidential museum or library which he would put in place after leaving office.

“I am grateful for the insignia given to me: the plaque, the medal and the dress are quite unique.

They will be very conspicuous in my Presidential museum or library so that even after 50 years, people will still see and appreciate what you have done today even if I have left this world and have gone beyond, what you have done will still be displayed in my library for people to see,” he said.

Shortly before presenting the award, Buzu said it was in recognition of Jonathan’s outstanding leadership qualities, strides, contributions and laudable achievements as the President of the country.

He said Jonathan had proven to be an excellent leader and a wonderful asset to the country.

He added that one excellent quality that distinguished the President for the award was the legacy of peace which he had bequeathed to Nigeria and Nigerians.

The clergyman added that for conceding defeat and calling Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him after the Presidential elections, Jonathan saved lives of those who would have been consumed by violence.

He said the President’s decision was unprecedented in the country and in Africa.

We’ll Choose Senate President On Merit – Bola Tinubu

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that choosing the Senate President will be based on merit.

He said this in Abuja on Thursday, May 21, after a closed-door meeting with the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “Well, you have heard from the party; you have heard from leadership. My desire is not to rock the party. I am a disciplined party man and we will look at it critically.

“However, the nation is expecting us to take a decisive leadership decision. Merit would not be compromised. You have to be competent; you have to possess the character for the leadership.

“You have to be PAN Nigerian and be a very solid character to lead the National Assembly and that is what we are talking about.”

He said the party’s decision is that the Senate President will not be chosen through zoning as that may “compromise the credibility, qualification of an individual.” He added, “let everybody aspire just like we aspired.”

He assured Nigerians that the party will make the best decision in the interest of all.

The incident happened at Agege area of Lagos on May 7, after the deceased bought bottles of Ogogoro (local gin) for his drinking companions, who then challenged him to finish a bottle of bitters and smoke five sticks of cigarette within a stipulated time.

If he had won, the friends would have paid for everything he consumed. Vanguard gathered that after agreeing to the terms, the deceased opened the bottle of bitters, drank it in less than two minutes, smoked two sticks of cigarette, stood up and began to walk away.

His friend’s story His friend, 28-year-old Earnest Joseph, who had gone out with him said:

“At about 8am, Thompson returned from his security guard job, went inside his room and slept. “Later in the afternoon, two of his friends came.

“As soon as we finished consuming the first bottle, Thompson and his relatives began to speak their local dialect, which I do not understand.

“All of a sudden, the vendor brought a big bottle of bitters. I asked Thompson if he was the one that ordered for the bottle.

He said his friends ordered it and that he wants to prove to them that he can drink a bottle of Alomo Bitters and five sticks of cigarettes.

“I tried to stop him but he drank it in less than two minutes, smoked two sticks of cigarette and decided to leave.

His relatives called him back to smoke the remaining three.” Trouble He said trouble started as soon as he finished the fifth stick.

Gov Fashola to commission agrochemicals plant

The Candel Company Limited, a leading agricultural inputs development and distribution company, has announced that its integrated manufacturing facility for crop protection chemicals and foliar fertilizers at the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, will be commissioned on May 26 by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

The multi-billion naira project, which is only in its first phase, when completed, will deliver a facility with capacity for 80 million litres of formulated products per annum.

It will enable Candel to deliver solutions most suited to Nigeria’s tropical climate and peculiar farming systems. There is currently no local production of crop protection agrochemicals in Nigeria with over $400 million in foreign exchange expended annually to import them.

Crop protection chemicals protect crops from weeds, pests and diseases when in the field, during transportation and in the store and are helping the quest for increased crop yields and better preservation by Nigerian farmers. Candel’s factory is configured to produce products specially targeted at small scale farmers as well as customised formulations with different surfactant levels for large scale farmers.

The facility has five process plants for Soluble Liquids (SL), Emulsifiable Concentrates (EC) and Suspension Concentrates (SC) of products from diverse chemical families. It has sufficient capacity to supply Candel’s own distribution network in Nigeria and Ghana with enough spare capacity for third parties in Nigeria and overseas. The target of the international market influenced its location at the Lekki Free Zone.

Construction of the production facility began early 2014 after an extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) exercise under the full supervision and guidance of the Federal and Lagos State Ministries of Environment.

Charles Anudu, the Chairman of Candel Company underlined the company’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit as well as the many years of experience in the field of crop protection and nutrition thus: “Our company has a reputation for being at the leading edge of innovation and entrepreneurship that have helped to frame our industry in the context of the local realities. Our world-class factory is geared towards tailor-made solutions that address the peculiarities of our farming systems thereby improving the industry economics and competitiveness of West Africa’s crop farmers.”

“We are determined to restore the quality standard that has since declined in our industry by ensuring that every product that is made in our facility meets the highest international standard for such a product. Nigerian farmers will get peace of mind when they buy any of the products made in this factory,” added Mr. Emmanuel Kattie, the Managing Director of Candel.

“We are very pleased that Candel chose the Lekki Free Zone to site its pioneering project and happy with the rapid progress and quality of construction so far. Projects of this nature create highly skilled and entry-level job opportunities for our local communities which is a major benefit of a Free Zone like ours. We will continue to ensure that the framework conditions are attractive for serious investors like Candel, especially with our state-of-the-art infrastructure,” enthused Mr. Yonghua Ding, the Managing Director of the Lekki Free Zone Development Company (LFZDC).
