Gunmen Allegedly Kidnap Ex-Plateau Governor, Joshua Dariye’s Father

Gunmen kidnap ex-Plateau governor, Joshua Dariye’s father

Suspected kidnapers, Saturday night, kidnapped the father of a former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye.

A witness told PREMIUM TIMES that the victim, who is said to be in his late 80s, was abducted at his residence in Mushere, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The source, who asked not to be named as he is not permitted to speak for the family, said the kidnappers fired gun shots in the air to scare residents of the area before the victim was abducted and taken to an unknown destination.

However, the police in the state are yet to confirm the incident. The spokesperson of the police in Plateau, Abuh Emmanuel, in a telephone interview on Sunday asked for more time to confirm the incident.

Mr. Emmanuel said he will contact the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area for details.

The victim’s son, Mr. Dariye, currently represents Plateau Central in the Senate and is seeking re-election. The politician could not be reached for comments as at press time.

But our source, a close associate to the former governor, said he has been told of the incident.

Nigeria Is Investors Unavoidable Destination - France

Unveils 240bn euro Africa investment fund

By Ndubuisi Francis in Paris, France

Despite the various challenges bedeviling the country, France has described Nigeria as investors’ unavoidable destination.

French Minister of Finance and Economy, Mr. Michael Sapin, who disclosed this at the weekend, said Nigeria would be a major beneficiary of a 240 billion Euro fund being earmarked by France for investment in Africa as the European nation renews its investment drive on the continent.

Sapin stated that investing in Africa without Nigeria was unthinkable, adding: “if you are not in Nigeria, you are not in Africa”.

“With a huge market and investment potentials, he noted that “no serious investor can ignore Nigeria, given the large population, highly skilled human capital and massive untapped natural resources.”

Sapin said already a contact group had been formed to ensure that French investors took the centre-stage of business activities in Nigeria and African countries.

“Perception about Africa is changing rapidly, especially after over a decade of steady impressive economic growth, even when most regions of the world were experiencing slow growth or even recession.

“French investors have to know this, that French needs Africa. With a budding young population who are highly skilled and entrepreneurial, we must give impetus to this needed collaboration between Africa and France,” Sapin said.

French President, Francois Hollande, who unfolded France’s renewed investment plans in Africa at the ‘French-African Forum for a Shared Growth’ in Paris, France at the weekend, described Africa as “our future.”

Hollande stated that Africa stands out as the world’s preferred investment destination, considering its impressive economic growth over the years and abundant unexploited human and natural resources.

His government, he said, was adopting a multi-pronged investment drive in Africa as well as infrastructure funding, noting that France was willing to woo a number of countries to invest in Africa.

The French leader noted that there was a convergence of cultural links, assuring that France would support Africa better in investment and funding of projects.

He said the 240 billion euro being earmarked by his government for Africa would help African countries drive their growth, admonishing French companies to be more aggressive in their investments in Africa.

“Africa is our future. It is a continent with great demographic evolution. It has recorded the highest growth in the last few years. It is also a continent full of untapped resources...,” Hollande said, noting that Africa boasts an army of vibrant youth population unlike other continents

Besides the 240 billion euro earmarked for investment in Africa, he disclosed that an export bank was being put together at the end of March to help African countries access funds.

President Goodluck Jonathan was represented at the forum, attended by many African leaders, ministers and corporate chieftains, by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

At a session on “Financial Innovation for a Shared and Inclusive Growth,” Okonjo-Iweala stated that existing resources fall short of what is required to surmount various challenges in Africa, citing, for instance, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) figures which says that $30 billion investment is required annually to eradicate poverty.

The minister said there was the need to come up with more innovative financing options to meet various needs in Africa, adding that how to raise far more domestic resources was imperative.

She said more efforts should be channelled into what she described as "traditional sources" of projects funding.

Okonjo-Iweala, who said Nigeria was adopting a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement to finance two flagship projects—the Second Niger Bridge and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, noted the problem with PPPs was that it takes up to seven years to conclude such arrangements which is longer than the lifespan of an administration.

But she said with the involvement of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), managers of the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) in the Second Niger Bridge, the Jonathan administration was working on leveraging on the available legal and technical expertise to see how to wrap up everything, including financing within three years.

The minister also said another innovative financing source was Diaspora remittances, which could be securitised as well as financial inclusion, which incorporates people from the lower rungs of the ladder- Thisday newspaper

AFCON Final: Ivory Coast Vs Ghana Today At 8pm

Bata: Ivory Coast face what is likely to be their sternest test of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations when they tackle Ghana Sunday in what has been dubbed the `dream` final.

Two of Africa`s football powerhouses are in dire need of a continental trophy after long, frustrating waits.

Ghana have won the Cup of Nations four times but their last conquest was 33 years ago, while the Ivorians only triumph was in 1992 and, ironically, it was at the expense of Ghana.

Ivory Coast beat their west African neighbours 11-10 on penalties after 120 minutes of action did not produce any goals in Dakar.

In the absence of defending champions Nigeria and record seven-time winners Egypt, two of the continent`s most consistent teams will clash for African football`s biggest prize.

Both started this tournament slowly - the Ivorians needed to win their last group game against Cameroon to reach the knockout stage, while Ghana fought back from an opening-day loss to Senegal to make the final.

Former Nigeria skipper Sunday Oliseh, who won the Cup of Nations in 1994 and came close to another title in 2000, has tipped Ivory Coast to win, but also warned Ghana are capable of causing an upset.

"Ivory Coast is clear favourite to win the final," said Oliseh on his website.

"Player for player, Ivory Coast has better individuals than Ghana and they are playing better as a team now, especially when not in possession.

"Ghana are quite impressive and, with (Christian) Atsu and the Ayew brothers (Andre and Jordan), are becoming unpredictable and champion material.

"They go into this final as underdogs but with less pressure, unlike Ivory Coast, due to the fact that not many would have bet on them coming this far when the tournament kicked off."

The "new generation" Black Stars have flourished under former Chelsea manager Avram Grant and displayed strong character throughout this campaign.

"The boys do not give up, they have fought till the end of every match," remarked skipper Asamoah Gyan, who remains an injury doubt after sustaining an abdominal injury in the quarter-final against Guinea.

Ivory Coast, on the other hand, have been tactically shrewd and well organised when they do not have the ball.

They have been able to combine talented stars like Yaya Toure and Gervinho with hard-working team-mates.

Gervinho said they are gunning for history against Ghana.

"It has been a long time since we have had a final between Ghana and Ivory Coast and we want to write our history too. This is our chance and we hope to take it," the Roma forward told AFP.

"We are very motivated. From the beginning of this competition, we said we have six games to play -- we have played five and there is one remaining."

Tallo Gadji Celi was born in 1992, the year his uncle Gadji Celi led the Elephants to Cup of Nations glory and now hopes he can write his own name into history.

The Bastia striker said victory in the final will be dedicated to Ivorian legend Didier Drogba, who retired from international football last year.

"Didier Drogba, our model, our strength, we love you. It will also be for you if we make it," said the player who wears the No.11 shirt worn with distinction by Drogba.

Some Interesting Facts About The Urhobo People Of Delta State

This thread is to enlighten Nairalanders about the Urhobo people. Most Nigerians may not have heard about Urhobos and some of those who may have heard anything about them dont know much about them. I am an Urhobo and I want others to see my people for what they really are.

- The Urhobos are the majority ethnic group in Delta State with more than a million people. They occupy Delta Central exclusively but they are also present in a few numbers in Delta South. They also have 9 LGAs out of the 25 LGAs in Delta State. The Urhobos effectively constitute the 5th largest ethnic group in Nigeria coming after the Ijaws.

- The Urhobo people share a common ancestry with Edo people. It is even said that the Urhobos migrated from Edo. The language is very similar and there are cultural similarities as wells. Some names and words are shared such as "Efe". In some Urhobo clans and kingdoms, the king (Ovie) has to pay a certain tribute to the Oba of Benin in other for his ascent to the throne to be legitimate.

- The Urhobo people are also similar to the Isoko people of Delta State. At a point in time, the white colonisers referred to both the Isoko and Urhobo people as the "Sobo" people. However this was fought against by both tribes. As of now, the Isokos manage to understand Urhobo at the elementary level and some Urhobos can understand the Isoko language.

- The Urhobo nation is made up of many sub-cultural units with obvious differences. This is why many scholars are quick to say that Urhobo is a cultural unit and not a geographical unit. What binds all the various sub-cultural units together is the commonness of Urhobo cultural worldview and tradition. However, linguistically, there are alot of differences. Some of these sub-groups include the Okpe people that reside in Orerokpe, Sapele, Amukpe, Aghalokpe, etc. The Uvwie people of Effurun and its environs, the Agbon people of Okpara, Kokori, Eku, Ovu-Oviore, etc, The Abraka people of Abraka, the Ughelli people of Ughelli, the Agbassa people, etc. Major Urhobo towns and cities in Delta State include: Okparabe, Arhavwarien, Warri, Sapele, Abraka, Ughelli, Effurun, Aladja, Ovwian, Orerokpe, Amukpe, Eku, Oghara, Evwreni, Agbarha-Otor, Agbarho, Okpara Inland, Egini, Kokori, Olomu, Kiagbodo, Isiokoro, Jesse, Ogharaefe, Effurun-Otor, Ewu, Jeremi, Emadadja, Okwagbe, Ovu, Orogun, Owahwa, Otogor, Edjekota-Ogor, Ofone, Otor-Udu, Ekpan, Jeddo, Uwheru, Urhowhorun, etc.

- The Urhobo people are highly egalitarian by nature and believe in equality and freedom. Their major political systems are Monarchy and Gerontocracy. Urhobo traditional monarchy is usually headed by an Ovie(king) who oversees the affairs of his kingdom. He is assisted by the Oloroguns (Chiefs) and Ohovwores (Female Chiefs). He also vests ceremonial/honorary titles on well deserving non-indigenous persons.

- The Urhobo people are very demonstrative when they speak. This usually adds a dramatic touch to their conversations. This is one of the reasons why Urhobos excel in entertainment. Especially when it involves comedy.

- The Urhobo people usually greet by saying Mee-gwooo /mi:gwɔ:/ which means "I am kneeling o" and the response is Vreen-Do /vrɜ:dÖ/ which means "Stand up. Thank you." Whereas Mavor? /ma:vɔ:/ means "How far?".

-The first Urhobo man to go to a university is McNeil Gabriel Ejaife of Okpara. He graduated with a B.A. degree of Durham University in 1948. The first Urhobo Professor is Frank Ukoli who was appointed in 1973. Six Urhobo academics have been vice chancellors of Universities, namely, Philip Kuale, Frank Ukoli, Andrew Onokerhoraye, Eric Arubayi, Andrew Evwaraye and Uvie Igun.

-The Yorubas have Afenifere, the Hausas have Arewa while the Igbos of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The Urhobos have UPU (Urhobo Progress Union). This is the apex socio-political and cultural group belonging to the Urhobos.

-The Urhobo traditional meal is Oil soup, also known as Ohwo soup by Urhobos, and Starch, known as Usi by the Urhobos. The second traditional meal is Ukhodo (Yam and Plantain Soup). The Urhobos also take Banga soup, Ogbono soup, Pepper soup, Egusi soup, etc, as delicacies.

-The first Nigerian indigenous monotheistic religion originated from the Urhobo town known as Kokori. This was where Ubiesha Atakpo started the Igbe Religious Movement. This movement seeks to worship and glorify a single God (known as Oweya) through dancing and the consumption of native chalk.

-Urhoboland has a good supply of crude oil. This is one of the reasons why it is a major site for oil exploration. For instance, the Erhioke oil wells of Kokori are thought to be among the shallowest oil wells in the world.

-The Urhobos are highly educated and have the love for Western education. They are known to have one of the highest concentration of Professors, Doctors and Lawyers in the Niger-Delta region. Almost all the tertiary institutions in Delta State are situated in Urhobo land. i.e., Delta State University, Abraka; Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun; Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Ugbomro; College of Physical and Health Education, Mosogar; College of Education, Ejeba; Delta State Polytechnic, Oghara; College of Health Technology, Ufuoma, etc.

-The Urhobo people maintain a closely-knit family unit. Family ties are strong and are maintained until death.

-The Urhobos share Warri City together with the Itsekiris and Ijaws. Warri is the economic nerve of Delta State. The native Urhobos in Warri are known as Agbassa-Urhobo or Agbarha-Ame and Okere-Urhobo. They maintain good relationships with their neighbours and have been known to inter-marry since time immemorial. When the Warri crisis started, the Urhobos were known to have been neutral in the issue.

-The Urhobo name for God is Oghene . The name for Life is Akpo . The name for Love is Eguono . Many Urhobo names derive from these terms.

Richard Mofe Damijo, the commissioner of tourism in Delta State and actor is half-Urhobo. The popular and award-winning sprinter, Blessing Okagbare, is also of Urhobo origin. Some known Urhobo writers include : Professor J.P. Clark, Ben Okri, Professors Tanure Ojaide, Isidore Okpewho, and Hope Eghagha, and Ben Omonode. The foremost Urhobo nationalist is Mukoro Mowoe.

Why Is Eating Okro Soup Forbidden To Some People, Especially At Parties?

A few years ago,my mum was at a party where okro soup mixture(popularly called ila asepo among yoruba people) was served with boiled meat(gross, isn't it?) and most people couldn't help complaining about the food. They felt it was totally wrong and you know,my mum keeps talking about how insulting that was each chance she gets.

Well it has been noticed(by me smiley) among a number of families who try as much as possible to avoid eating okro and some I know have even banned it from being eaten in their homes because of the belief that the soup draws back the progress of those who eat it and they could even get 'spiritually attacked'.

Some simply avoid it because of the stomach upset that comes with the soup. What do you think about this conception? Is okro really that wrong to be presented at parties?

BTW,I sort of love okro soup save for the stomach upset that at times come with it. cool

Fashola/INEC Allegedly Withold PVCs Of Igbos/SS In Lagos State

Governor Fashola should please release PVCS cards Igbo Lagos residents. Fashola a man that at times aspires to higher ideals must resist his God father Owner of Lagos Ahmed Bola Tinubu on this very issue. He must not allow himself to be dragged to the lowest of Nigeria's political gutters by disenfranchisement of your fellow citizens. Mr. Fashola you are better than that. Get the PVCs out of the hands of the Iyaolojas and party touts masquerading as local government employes asking people for voting inclinations or bribe before handing them out. This you must do in the name of fairness, justice and humanity. Our Igbo brothers and sisters might actually be galvanize by this sordid act that it might come back to bite you big time.

Fashola, release IGBO PVCs. NOW.

Read the blind item that predicted Bobbi Kristina's tragedy

Back in March 2014, the guys at Crazy Days and Nights, wrote that Bobbi Kristina's boyfriend, Nick Gordon will end up killing her. Fast forward to February 2015 and the 21 year old heir to Whitney Houston's fortune is fighting for her life after she was found unconscious in a bathtub. Criminal investigation is now targeting Nick Gordon.

March 28, 2014

For the past few months things have been getting worse. What was always a volatile relationship has turned more violent than volatile. Family members have tried to help this C list reality star offspring of this former A+ list entertainer(singer). From people I have spoken to who have been inside the home of our C lister, things are bad. There are drugs everywhere. There is cash everywhere. It is like watching Scarface. The significant other of our C lister thinks he is the next Scarface. The thing is he sucks at business. He just uses the money of our C lister to make it seem like he is making millions of dollars. Instead he is spending every cent she gets in the second it comes in and has made her sign all types of documents which have basically cost her most of her future income for the next few years. When he doesn’t keep her drugged up he beats her. He has all kinds of recordings of her doing anything he can think of just to keep her in line. He says he will release it all if she tries to leave him. She is scared of him and loves him at the same time. When he is wasted the beatings can be rough and there have been shots fired more than once. Everyone knows he is going to end up killing her one night. She will try and leave and he won’t like that and will shoot her and kill her. The family hopes she can escape, but she has no place to go that she would accept help from.

Poll Shift: US Reacts, Condemns Postponement Of Nigeria’s Elections

The United States government has expressed ‘deep’ disappointment by the decision to postpone Nigeria’s presidential election, which had been scheduled for February 14.

A statement by U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, shortly after the announcement of the poll shift by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, on Saturday, said political interference with INEC is unacceptable.

Mr. Jega, while announcing the shift, said INEC’s decision follows a letter from security agencies informing the commission that security cannot be guaranteed if the elections go ahead as scheduled.

He said the Nigerian military is currently engaged in operations against Boko Haram insurgents in the north-eastern part of the country.

“Last Wednesday…the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) wrote a letter to the Commission, drawing attention to recent developments in four Northeast states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe currently experiencing the challenge of insurgency.

“The letter stated that security could not be guaranteed during the proposed period in February for the general elections,” Mr. Jega said.

But the U.S. government in its reaction said “it is critical that the government not use security concerns as a pretext for impeding the democratic process”.

Mr. Jega had also on Saturday announced new dates of March 28 and April 11 for national and state elections.

The US said the international community would be watching closely as the Nigerian government prepares for elections on the newly scheduled dates.

“The United States underscores the importance of ensuring that there are no further delays.

“As I reaffirmed when I visited Lagos last month, we support a free, transparent, and credible electoral process in Nigeria and renew our calls on all candidates, their supporters, and Nigerian citizens to maintain calm and reject election-related violence,” Mr. Kerry said.

How To Quit Pornography Addiction And Womanizing

I was born into a Christian family in the early 80’s. well brought up and groomed by my parents. I had the best of education and grew up among my peers. I knew peace, love and was focus in my studies until I discovered pornography in secondary school. I still remember how one of my classmates brought a VHS cassette to school at the boarding house and that was what caught our attention and like they say, the rest is history. This is a lesson for every Nigeria youth in secondary and university. The devil can use anyone to influence and redirect your life, so be careful of the type of people you choose to be your friend. I learnt the bitter way and I have paid the price.

I was involved in pornography for almost 11 years of my life that I was crowned the king of porn during my University days…peer pressure. Each time I passed through different boys hostels in our school, I was hailed and encouraged. A lot of students came to download and copy this porn to their phones and laptops. I had different collections of it then until I found help and with the help of God I was able to come out of from my. I must tell you it is the devils way of enslaving Christians into the pit of hell. You lost concentration as a result of uncontrollable use of porn, I thought negatively of all sorts of insane things, self-service and womanizing actually became my hobby.

I used to watch dozens of pornography films weekly that it became a habit for me that affected me psychologically and negatively. I tried a lot of countless times but couldn’t withstand it because I didn’t know how to do it. Then one day I decided to quit porn completely and just right away my life turned around for good with the help of Jesus Christ and that is what I want you to achieve too in 2015.

I stopped watching porn because I seeked for help in the right places. I confided in my mentor about my predicament and my friend who is also a medical doctor in one of the Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria. He was able to take a history of my past activities and the circumstances surrounding my excessive crave and demand for porn and Unclothedness. He had to place under special monitoring and developed a system that worked for me perfectly in checkmating my trigger points. I also had to work hand in hand with a psychologist and life coach who I signed up under his tutoring classes. I must tell you that cost me some money because those services didn’t come cheap. But the results started showing up by second week. Within some few weeks of conscious effort to quit porn I was gaining confidence and seeing results. More concentration and good use of my time.

My dear friend, ever since I stopped watching pornography, I have been able to save money, get married and have a thriving business of my own. My love life has improved greatly as well because I no longer live in the shadow of the past when I found it difficult relating to my girlfriend emotionally. Pornography made me weak and sober after engaging in such a shameful acts.

If you are addicted to pornography, I urge you to consider quitting today in 2015. Yes! It is possible. Take a pen and write your GOALS and action plan and together I will personal work with you to quit this terrible habit. Go for confession today in the church, talk to a respected man of God who will help in deliverance and counselling for you. Your life will change in so many positive way. You will begin to connect with God and experience tremendous breakthrough and success. Remember your body is God’s temple, do not defile it. I wish you fast recovery and total freedom from the addiction of pornography in Jesus Name.
