Konga.Com, The Brand Building Force Behind Infinix Success In Nigeria

Nigeria has been purported to be one of the fastest growing economies in the world and today foreign investors and businesses are increasingly focusing on Africa’s most populous country. One company that is forging a success story in Nigeria is leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers – Infinix mobility. What is interesting about the success model for this company is that it has been built on a long term partnership with Nigerian ecommerce company, Konga.com.

Entering into Nigeria’s market, Infinix Mobility exclusively adopted Konga.com’s ecommerce platform for the introduction of its first flagship device, the Infinix Zero. The unprecedented but very ingenious move saw Infinix enjoy record growth from Konga’s widespread reach and penetration across Nigeria. Konga capably rose to the task of building popularity and preference for the Infinix Zero with strategic marketing campaigns and support and within the first few weeks of the device launch, Konga.com recorded over 100,000 units of the devices sold.

Since then, Infinix continues to reapply this winning model, retaining Konga as its exclusive partner for the launch of their devices. According to Bruno Li, Country Manager for Infinix Nigeria, “With the heights we seek to take the Infinix brand to in Nigeria, it was clear that Konga is one company that would get us there”. In November 2014, Infinix launched another device on Konga.com; Infinix Hot X507. Unsurprisingly, the outstanding success was replicated. Today, on the back of innovative marketing and positioning led by Konga.com, Infinix has now grown to be one of the top selling mobile devices in Nigeria.

According to Konga’s Marketing Vice President, Gabriel Gab-Umoden; “Konga is happy to be a part of this incredible success story. We bring to the fore the importance of local content in reaching customers. Our marketing and sales strategy is predicated on Konga’s deep understanding of the Nigerian consumers and the best ways to reach them with the right value proposition in terms of competitive pricing and with excellent service delivery. We also commend Infinix for delivering top value in the mobile phone category. They have been instrumental in driving up smartphone and android penetration up in just a few months”.

Konga’s successes with introducing and building brands is pretty extensive. Some other brands in Nigeria today that are very well known and respected in the Nigerian market following joint launches with Konga.com include Polystar, Lenovo, BlackBerry, Huawei, Gionee, Fly, Skyworth, Saisho.

According to Infinix Country Manager Mr. Li, “Infinix is set to launch the highly anticipated Infinix Zero 2 phone on Konga, this May”. Click here to be one of the first to own the device exclusive to Konga.com.

Federal Government Upgrades Four Colleges Of Education To Universities

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the conversion of four federal colleges of education to universities.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the council, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Minister of Information, Patricia Akwashiki, and Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, briefed State House correspondents of the meeting’s outcome.

Shekarau listed the affected colleges of education as Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (now Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo); Federal College of Education, Zaria (now Federal University of Education, Zaria); Federal College of Education, Kano (now Federal University of Education, Kano);and Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri (now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri).

The minister explained that the colleges of education were part of the 21 federal colleges of education that had been awarding degree programmes in the last three decades under the close supervision of the different universities they are affiliated to.

He said the council considered the need for further quality in teaching service, hence the conversion of the colleges to universities since more graduates would be needed in the teaching profession.

“We are heading to having more graduates in the teaching profession and hence the need for these universities to produce graduates in education. If we need quality education, we need quality teachers,” he said.

Shekarau explained that the next step was for the Ministry of Justice to prepare amendment to the laws establishing the colleges.

This, he explained, would be followed by some administrative changes.

The minister added that the council had approved the establishment of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.

Until the approval, the university was said to be the College of Medical Health Sciences under the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

He said the institution had now been granted autonomy as part of continuous efforts to ensure quality graduates into the various fields of medicine and sciences.

“So, a total of five universities were approved at the council meeting today,” the minister added.

Buhari Appoints Femi Adesina As Special Adviser On Media And Publicity

Less than 10 days to the inauguration of his administration, the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, may have made his first official appointment by naming the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Sun newspapers, Mr. Femi Adesina, as his Special Adviser (SA) on Media and Publicity.

Adesina’s appointment, though yet to be formally announced, is said to have been concluded but merely waiting for some formality before the official announcement.

Already, the management of The Sun Newspaper, it was gathered, is concluding plans to re-organise its management structure following Adesina’s impending departure.

Adesina was recently re-elected as the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) for another term of two years.

The NGE president was returned unopposed at the 2015 bi-ennial convention of the Guild which held in Lagos by his colleagues, most of whom described his tenure as the “best the Guild has ever had.”

With his new appointment, Adesina also becomes the second person to be so appointed while serving as the president of the Guild of Editors. The first person was the late Mrs. Remi Oyo, who was the SA, Media and Publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

A prolific writer and tested journalist, Adesina started his career at the Vanguard Newspapers as a features writer before later moving to the defunct National Concord Newspapers. He is a pioneer staff of The Sun newspaper where he became the editor, and later the managing director and editor-in-chief, a position he will be quitting for the new assignment.

As the president, Guild of Editors, Adesina fought for the rights and protection of journalists at every event or fora. In one of such events was a lecture organised by the Bank of Industry (BoI) where he advised the bank to find ways of encouraging media practitioners by giving them loans for the purpose of establishing businesses after retirement, pointing out that the media industry cannot afford to have more ‘veteran’ journalists.

Adesina in his presentation at the event titled: ‘‘The Media and BOI: Working Together’’ admonished Bol to patronise media houses, saying that they are not charitable organisations.

‘‘When you therefore have businesses, patronise them. If they are good enough for your press releases and other editorial items, they must also be good enough for your advertisements. Build a mutually rewarding relationship, including rendering investment support, as the journalists may require,” he said.

A seasoned and renowned journalist with over 28 years of experience in the industry, Adesina took The Sun to a new height. Under his leadership, the newspaper won several reputable awards.

In 2007, he was named the Editor of the Year by the Nigeria Media Merit Award.

Nigerian Elected As President of The Global Network of Export-Import Banks

The Global Network of Export-Import Banks and Development Finance Institutions (G-NEXID) concluded its 10th Annual General Meeting today at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland with the election of Mr. Roberts U Orya, the MD/CEO of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) as its new ‘Honorary President.’

The G-NEXID, with a membership of 24 institutions – http://ift.tt/1HeYT1Z – was established in March 2006 at the joint initiative of Exim Bank of India and UNCTAD, as a platform to boost South-South trade and investment relations.

In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Orya thanked the members for his election as the 4th Honorary President of the Global Network of Export-Import Banks and Development Finance Institutions (G-NEXID). According to him, “…I see my election as a privilege to serve and continue in the giant strides already made by my predecessors towards forging and fostering a strategically vibrant and mutually beneficial South-South trade relationship…. It is also an honour to my country, Nigeria, which is the largest economy in Africa…especially as we have just concluded a very peaceful Presidential election.”

Validating the excellent work of his predecessors, Mr. Roberts Orya attested that, “the G-NEXID in the past nine (9) years of its establishment has transformed into an association of relevance to realize the objectives of its formation, largely through the able leadership and dynamism of institutions that held the past Honorary Presidency and commitment of members.”

Particularly, Mr. Orya lauded the outgoing Honorary President, Mr. Rubens Amaral Jr. who, according to him, had in the last two years stepped up the achievements recorded thus far by taking giant strides to re-invigorate G-NEXID influence and reach. Notable among the specific activities are the new membership drive, increasing revenues, the institution of a Focal Group from active members of the Steering Committee, and the re-organization of the Secretariat, which has culminated in the recruitment of a new Coordinator.

Mr. Orya stated that his tenure would be devoted towards boosting bilateral and multilateral agreements of all kinds between member export-import (Exim) banks and development-finance institutions (DFIs); as well as the development of appropriate collaborative framework and strategic partnerships with organizations such as Berne Union, Association of African Development Finance Institutions [AADFI], and other such regional economic initiatives to be evidenced by tangible transactional relationships. Expected benefits of such cooperation and partnerships would help improve trade and investment within the member countries; improve information sharing/capacity building – exchange programs among member institutions while enabling regional integration and the growth of niche markets.

Orya is the 4th Honorary President of the G-NEXID after Mr. Rubens V. Amaral Jr. Chief Executive Officer of Bladex (2013 – 2015); Mr. Jean-Louis Ekra, Chairman and President of the African Export-Import Bank (2009-2013); and Mr. T.C.
