Nigeria Gets N1.2bn from UN for 2015 Elections

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

The UN Secretary-General High Level Representative to Nigeria, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has announced that the United Nations (UN) provided 60 million dollars, about N1.2 billion, to ensure the success of Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.

Chambas disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Friday. And according to him, the UN was interested in Nigeria’s elections because “the country is too important for the sub-region, the region and the world at large”. More details later...

Elections: We Will Announce Results Within 48 Hours – Jega

As Nigerians go to the polls tomorrow in the presidential and national assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will announce the result of the elections within 48 hours after voting.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega who revealed this Friday, during a joint press briefing with the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi said the electoral body has put everything in place to ensure a hitch free exercise.

He said that the use of the card reader and the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will make it easier for the commission to conduct an election that will be free, fair and credible in line with international best practices even as he equally used the opportunity to clear the air on an allegation by some politicians that he was planning to aid the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the card reader contrary to the allegation has no master key but a security chip which can only be breached when the card is cut.

Chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega

Jega also revised the argument whether voters should vote and go home or stay for the result to be announced, saying the statement of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba that people should go home after voting was only advisory.

“There is no controversy whether people should vote and go or stay. People should remain to know who wins in their polling unit as long as they remain calm. The statement of the IG is only advisory.”

The INEC boss also revealed that the elections will take place in all the 119,973 polling units across the country even as he added that there is no polling unit with more than 750 voters because where that occurs they should be broken into voting points.

Jonathan Arrives Otuoke Amidst Tight Security

There was tight security in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area in Bayelsa State on Friday as President Goodluck Jonathan arrived his hometown.

The president will cast his vote at a polling unit near his country home.

Prior to his arrival, two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) were seen on the Otuoke Road, one in front of the president’s house.

The other was parked in front of Magels Resort, a hotel close to UBA, the only bank in Otuoke.

Earlier, a helicopter was seen hovering around the town, apparently on security surveillance.

Soldiers and policemen were also seen on the main road, as well as plain-clothes officers who guarded the president’s house.

There were sign posts directing motorists to “keep moving,” while police officers shouted at drivers of vehicles which stopped within the vicinity of the president’s home to leave.

The president arrived by 3pm in company of Governor Seriake Dickson and other aides.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned its operatives taking bribes from politicians while providing security at polling units.

The State Commandant Mr. Desmond Agu said any personnel found to have been compromised during the general elections would be prosecuted.

Addressing the men, he said: “Do not compromise. Do not allow politicians to use you to manipulate the process.

“Also, do not allow any other security agencies or your colleagues to influence you to collect bribes. Let me assure you that your allowances have been paid.

“We urge you to go out there and conduct yourselves as a security agency with integrity and professionalism.

“Let me reiterate here that the Commandant General of the corps, Mr. Ade Abolurin, has warned that no civil defenders should compromise. Your duties are to protect lives, staff of Independent Electoral Commission, ad hoc staff and citizens. Any compromise will be severely punished.”

He also advised the personnel to work in collaboration with other security agencies.

Also, the state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has advised residents and youths to stay away from banned narcotics during the exercise.

In a statement on Friday, it said the advice was to ensure that the elections were not marred by violence arising from drug-induced violence.

“Officers and men of the command have been deployed and are fully on ground to ensure that such activities are reduced to the barest minimum by arresting anybody found involved in this deviant behaviour.

“Parents and guardians are hereby advised to closely supervise the activities of their children and wards in order not to fall foul of the law and victims of the negative consequences of illegal drug trade and abuse,” the agency said.

Gov. Amaechi stage managed his gun attack - Rivers police say

The Rivers state Police command has released a statement regarding the alleged attack on Governor Rotimi Amaechi's convoy in Port Harcourt yesterday March 26. In the statement, the police said contrary to what was said by the Amaechi's Chief Press secretary, David Iyofor that political thugs loyal to the PDP attacked the governor's convoy, it was Governor Amaechi himself who orchestrated the gunshots fired at his convoy to gain public sympathy. Read the statement after the cut...

"The police wishes to react to the news that went viral on both normal and social media quoting David Iyofor, chief press secretary to Rivers state governor, to the effect that gunshots were fired at the convoy of his principal at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor local government. To put the records straight, after a successful and peaceful rally under the close watch of policemen led by the divisional police officer of the area, shots were indiscriminately fired from the convoy of the governor for reasons best known to them, as against the wispy claim of David Iyofor. No shots were fired at the convoy of the governor. The false alarm, which is the usual penchant of the state government, may not be unconnected with the bogus claim of assassination attempt by his principal that is to just whip up public sympathy. The command urges politicians to refrain from whipping sentiments by toying with security issues to create needless public panic, where there is none, please.” the statement read

Peter Okoye Says Marriage Has Made Me More Responsible

image

Singer Peter Okoye says getting married to Lola, his wife and mother of his two children has made him a more responsible man.

He says marriage has changed his perception as an individual but has not changed him as a member of P-Square…

“Marriage has made me to be more responsible, in the sense that there are certain things which I am limited to do as a married man.

But I still remain who I am because marriage doesn’t restrict me from doing what I know how to do best on stage.

In a nutshell, I will say marriage has changed me as Peter Okoye but not as Psquare” he told Vanguard.

12 Types Of People You Will Meet On Election Day

image

As we all know that the election is just few Hours to hold, and there are categories of people we are going to meet on that day and i bring to you, the 12 types of people we are going to meet at the polling unit on election day.

See The 12 Types Of People You Will Meet On Election Day Below:-

1 The gentlemen/ladies

These are the types of people the will visit the polling unit just to fulfil their mission which is to vote peacefully and after that, go back to their home without any problem.

2 The elders

These people(mostly men) are always between the age 70-80+ you will always find them sitting under a tree or any shaded area within the polling centre lecturing young men about the history of politics and how the country was going from bad to good and vice versa.

3 The I Too Know (ITKs)

These are the categories of people that you will see jumping from one place to the other as if they are INEC chairman. You will never see them at rest, they can even go to the extent of teaching the INEC officials their works.

4 The ushers

You will always see these categories of people on the queue looking very quiet but when they see a person trying to manipulate the queue, they will just walk to him/her and say something like “Oga, please go and join the queue at the back, we that have being on the line are not animals” they will never leave you until you do the needful.

5 The coordinators

They are more like the ushers but something special about them is that they are not always on the queue, if they see you trying to sneak into the queue, they will just appear from nowhere and say “hey” then point to the back, due to the fear that you don’t know the kind of person they are, you will port to the back with immediate effect.

6 The confused ones

Looking at them only, you will deduce that they are confused. They will always be looking as if someone is about to kidnap them or you will always see them asking questions silly like “Brother, will they collect this PVC from us after we are through?” or “Sister, shebi Buhari the PDP presidential candidate?” They are always annoying.

7 The VIPs

These are always the big men of the hood, they will just drive down to the polling unit with their expensive ride and walk up to the INEC officials with a bottle water in their hands and do all the necessary stuffs and drive back home immediately

8 The spacebookers

I usually wonder if that’s what they do to make money on that day or they are just naturally mumus. They will be on the queue for hours and when it’s almost their turn to vote, someone will just come from nowhere and take their place then you will see them leaving.

9 The lookers/observers

Some are not even there to vote but to watch people arguing or fighting, you will always see them at alert with their phones getting ready to snap/video any funny or fist throwing event that takes place at the unit.

10 The fighters

Their own mission is to come and cause violence at the polling unit, they will mistakenly hit you or march you, instead of saying sorry, they will turn it to fight. Be careful when dealing with them

11 The traders

I usually love the courage of these people coz any opportunity they see, they will use it to promote their business. You will see them early in the morning already offloading bags of pure water, snacks, groundnut, coolers of rice and other foods some will even bring their tables to roast boli(roasted plantains) at the polling unit, they are always desperate to make money.

12 The pickpocketers

One of my teachers defined them as “Dem no be thieves ooo but if they pass, something go lost”. All they need to do is to just look at your pocket and they will explore everything inside it then you will see them passing your side 24/7 or trying to form familiarity with you, my brother be watchful or else they will steal you sef.

keep calm and vote wisely. God Bless Nigeria

Amaechi Raised A Force Alarm, No One Fired At Him – Police

The Rivers State Police Command has disputed claims by the state government that some thugs shot at the governor’s convoy on Thursday.

The governor’s spokesperson, David Iyofor, had said the incident happened in Rumuolumeni, Obio Akpor area of Port Harcourt.

However, the Rivers State command spokesperson, Muhammed Ahmad, in a statement said contrary to the report, shots were actually fired from the governor’s convoy.

The police said Mr. Amaechi merely raised false alarm to win public sympathy to back his “bogus” claim of being targeted by assassins.

Read Police Statement:

1. The Rivers State Police Command wishes to react to the news that went viral on both normal and social media quoting David Iyofor, Chief Press Secretary to Rivers State Governor to the effect that gun shots were fired at the convoy of his principal at Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government.

3. The false alarm which is the usual penchant of the State Government may not be unconnected with the bogus claim of assassination attempt by his principal that is to just whip up public sympathy.

4. The Command urges politicians to refrain from whipping sentiments by toying with security issues to create needless public panic, where there is none, please.

Election: Court Gives INEC The Go Ahead Order To Use Card Reader

ABUJA- The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has declined to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from using the Smart Card Reader Machines for the presidential election holding tomorrow.

In a ruling this afternoon, Justice Ademola Adeniyi refused to issue an interim order of injunction stopping INEC from employing the technology for the presidential poll.

The court however summoned both the electoral body and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, to appear before the court on April 24 to address it on the legality or otherwise of the use of the card readers for a general election.

Meanwhile, even though the court rejected the application which was filed by a Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun state,‎ Mr. Walihu Taiwo, it however stressed that if ‎it eventually ascertains that the use of the card readers were illegal and unconstitutional, it will not ‎hesitate to annul the outcome of the general election.

How Nigerians Are Preparing For The General Elections

Few days to the 2015 general elections, Nigerians seem well prepared to exercise their civic responsibilities. And here is how they are gearing up for the March 28 and April 11, 2015 polls.

‘I will be relaxing with my family at home’ – ISAAC OGUNTOYE

From experience I know what to expect. Though I think this year’s elections will be different. For me and my family, we will be having the weekend to ourselves. More like a weekend getaway. The stress of Lagos is too much and this is an opportunity to relax with the family.

‘The fear of the election is in the heart of the people’ – CAROLINE EFURU

I have been receiving some broadcasts that we should stock food. For what? I don’t know why people specialise in fear and causing panic. It will be like a normal weekend, just that people will be indoors or go out to vote.

‘We are not voting on March 28′ – PRECIOUS CHINKATA

The truth is that my wife and I are not part of the general elections. The reason is simple. We don’t think our votes would count. Besides, we registered in Abia and can’t travel home to vote. We were actually ready to do that in February before they shifted the elections.

‘I’m very much prepared’ – CLEMENT AKPAMGBO JNR.

I’m very much prepared for the election because it means a lot to us as a nation. I’ve got my PVC. I’ve also encouraged my friends and relatives to come out enmasse and vote.

‘This election is none of my business’ – GLADYS OGBONNA

It’s unfortunate, I have nothing to do with this election. Something tells me the incumbent president might act funny since his electoral fortunes have dwindled considerably. So, anything they like, let them do, I’m not stepping out that day to vote.

‘I have PVC now, I can vote’ – MARY ITSELE

I am ready for the elections. I collected my PVC not quite long. I thought I won’t vote but now I have the card and I must vote. Nigeria needs change, we’re tired of life without evidence of tomorrow.

‘I am not preparing for elections because…’ – OYENMA EMMANUEL

I am not preparing for elections because I don’t have my PVC. During the time of distribution, I was unable to get registered due to the long queues.

‘We are ready for the elections’ – SAIDI OGUNTUNDE

We’re all preparing for the elections in our family. We’re very much particular about the presidential election. But our prayer is that political thugs won’t cause violence that day.

‘I will be home all day’ – BUNMI OGUNJOBI

Yes, there is a lot of pressure in town, a lot of people think there will be violence. I am really careful. I will be home all day, I registered on the island and I live in Ogun State, so, I will not be voting that day.

‘I don’t trust our government’ – OLUWAFUNMIBI JOSHUA

Yes I am, there is usually violence during elections and I don’t trust our government. They are playing politics with everything. I am not preparing in any way, they might even postpone the elections.

‘I don’t have a special preparation for the elections’ – ANWANA UNENE

I don’t have a special preparation for the elections, but I believe everything is in God’s Hands. I am only waiting for that day to come so that I will go and vote to whom it’s due to.

‘I am preparing very well’ – PAMEL ESSIET

I am preparing very well. I am also going through some training with INEC because on the elections. I will be working for INEC as an official.

http://ift.tt/1CU3d98

Nairalanders, how are you preparing for the election?

As for me, nothing much, just got to get a couple of things today against tomorrow and the week end...

US Stations Marines In Ghana In Fear Of Post Election Crisis In Nigeria - The Nation

The United States is preparing for a likely crisis in Nigeria after Saturday’s elections.

United States Secretary of State John Kerry has visited Nigeria, preaching peace, ahead of the elections. Vice President Joe Biden has spoken on the need for violence-free elections.

And President Barack Obama has urged Nigerians to keep this country united – whatever the outcome of the elections.

But the United States seems to have gone a step further by sending hundreds of marines to neighbouring Ghana.

An Aviation source in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, told The Nation that two Hercules C-130 transport planes landed at the Kotoka Airport last week, bearing “at leat three helicopters”.

“There are well over 200 marines,” the source, who pleaded not to be named because of what he described as the sensitivity of the matter, said.

“They are camped at the airport,” he added.

The helicopters are belived to be meant for the quick evacuation of Americans in Nigeria - in the event of violence.

It was not immediately clear yesterday where the marines and equipment may have been moved from. The United States has military bases in Europe.

The source also said two United States Navy ships had been sighted off the coast of Takoradi, Ghana.

A Ghana Defence source said one of the ships is equipped with medical facilities.

“More marines are expected,” he said, also pleading not to be named because, according to him, he is not allowed to talk to the media.

“It is not unusual for the United States or any other country to do this because they have to protect their people,” the source said.

Ghanaians have noticed the presence of the marines. The popular thinking is that they are in the country to train the military.

“Their mission is to move into Nigeria swiftly, should there be any need to do so,” the source said.

President Goodluck Jonathan, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his main challenger, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, have signed a peace accord in Abuja, pledging to maintain peace before, during and after the elections.

The United States is said to have had an intelligence report that the election could turn bloody, if the result does not favour the ruling party.

Leaders of the PDP and the APC are belived to be willing to accept the result, but “there are fears that should the polls be rigged, the citizenry may reject the results,” a source said.

DSS Uncovers Plot To Announce Election Results Before INEC

The Department of State Service has uncovered plans by some persons to announce election results ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, warning Nigerians and international observers to disregard any such announcement.

The DSS made this known yesterday in a statement signed by the Service spokesman, Marilyn Ogar and made available to LEADERSHIP Friday, in which she warned Nigerians who have no business with the elections to stay away from polling centres.

“Information at the disposal of this Service has revealed that certain mischievous persons or groups have concluded plans to announce election results before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concludes its collation exercise.

“This statement therefore is to advice all citizens of Nigeria, election observers and the International community to disregard election results which are not announced by INEC, as the commission remains the only authentic body authorized to do so.

“Once more, we reiterate our call on all eligible voters to come out and exercise their franchise as security is guaranteed. We also want to seize this opportunity to remind voters to remain vigilant and to warn all those who have no business with the electoral process to keep away from Polling Units and Collation Centres,” Ogar said.

Photos: Woman beats teacher in front of her students for sleeping with her husband

A woman savagely beat a teacher in front of her students after claiming that the teacher was having an affair with her husband. But instead of the students and other members of staff to stop the fight, they stood aside, watched the fight, filmed it and uploaded the clip on Youtube. Dang!!

35 year old Laelia Paredes Flores, stormed into the classroom in Huimanguillo in south-east Mexico, and attacked 32 year old Marcella Villalpando Tovar. Tovar was kicked, punched in her face and stomach and jumped on. And her students didn't do anything to stop it. In fact, another woman can be heard off camera encouraging the beat down. Wow! See the video after the cut...

Student Miriam Gracia Adomo, 16, said:

"The woman charged in and began shouting and screaming before punching our teacher to the floor. That’s when I ran to get help. But when other teachers came they just stood around watching. It was really terrible, terrible."

After the act was widely condemned, a school spokesperson released a statement saying;

“The woman claimed that our teacher was having an affair with the husband of one of the student’s dads and the mother took exception. We are appalled that this attack happened in our school and that nothing was done to stop it, and we shall be carrying out a full investigation.”

Watch the video below...
