Presd. Buhari To Make Third Foreign Trip In Three Weeks

President Muhammadu Buhari has made three foreign trips since he took over power on May 29.

The president had made Niger and Chad his first point of call to discuss a common enemy, Boko Haram. The Islamist sect which started its violent campaign in Nigeria had spread to its neighbours raising the need for a collaborative effort to end the terror.

Buhari’s second trip was to Germany where he attended the G7 Summit. Global terrorism was one of the main discussions at the summit. The Nigerian president had been specially invited by the G7 group, as well as leaders of other countries threatened by insurgency.

The former head of state is expected to be in South Africa this weekend for the African Union Summit which will focus on women empowerment and Africa’s longterm development.

Nigeria’s Consul General in South Africa, Amb. Uche Ajulu-Okeke, said on Tuesday that arrangements had been concluded to host President Buhari when he visits South Africa.

“It is normal for every president who goes to a foreign country for the first time to look for his primary constituents, the Nigerian community in that country. “ In line with this tradition, Mr President being the chief servant for Nigeria, is coming to South Africa to attend the African Union Summit and he will seize the opportunity to make out time from his hectic schedule to address his primary constituents,” she said.

The President of the Nigerian Union, South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, also said Nigerians in the nine provinces of South Africa had been mobilised to receive Buhari during his visit.

Reasoning We Are Supporting Buhari – G7 Countries

null

Members of The G7 group of industrialized nations gave reasons, yesterday, why they have resolved to support President Muhammadu Buhari.

The G7 nations comprising the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom said they are backing Buhari because they, among other reasons, acknowledged “the way and manner of his emergence and the tremendous challenges faced by the government he leads, not of his making, especially in its efforts to combat the Boko Haram.”

A statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the President, said at the end of President Buhari’s presentation on Monday, “the G7 leaders said to him that they recognized the President’s massive amount of confidence and expectations behind his government.

“They acknowledged him as having emerged from an election adjudged to be the freest in the country’s electoral history, but regretted the severe handicaps his new government has to face from the outset.”

According to the statement, “they told President Buhari that they took cognizance of the fact of the several handicaps, including the lack of resources, leaving him with a government over-stretched in capacity, itself riddled with mismanagement. They noted that the country’s army lacked training and equipment with little or no will to engage.

“In recognition of the fact that the security threat of the Boko Haram had gone beyond Nigeria, equally affecting other countries in the region, the G7 conceded that no one country can tackle it alone.

Warm sentiments towards Buhari

“They expressed warm sentiments towards the Nigerian leader and praised him for reaching out to the country’s neighbors and the group of industrialized nations within a week of his takeover of government.

“In view of the seriousness he has shown in tacking this problem, the group pledged that they would ‘engage, cooperate and collaborate’ with President Buhari’s government in tackling the serious problems that Nigeria faces.

“They left it to President Buhari to come up with the specifics on his requirements, assuring that they would study the requirements either individually or collectively and offer help.

They asked to know the nature and the scale of the problems in order to know the nature and the scale of the assistance they will provide.

Suffice it to say that they assured President Buhari that ‘Nigeria will find a partner in the G7.’”

President Buhari, who had the privilege of being the first to address the G7 among the invited presidents and prime ministers was warmly received at the summit. He returned to Nigeria yesterday

President Buhari Promises To Work With Senate President, Bukola Saraki & Speaker HOR, Yakubu Dogara

The Presidency has released a statement saying that President Buhari has noted the outcome of the elections of Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives respectively.
President Buhari in the statement reiterated his earlier position that he doesn’t wants to be drawn into the politics of the National Assembly but will work with whoever the lawmakers elect as their leaders.

The statement made available to journalists by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina reads in part;
“President Buhari had said in an earlier statement that he did not have any preferred candidate for the Senate and the House of Representatives, and that he was willing to work with whoever the lawmakers elected. That sentiment still stands. Though he would have preferred the new leaders to have emerged through the process established by the party.”

Maiduguri Airport To Reopen For Commercial Operations Friday – Borno Dep Gov

Close to two years since it was shut down as a result of persistent Boko Haram attacks, the Maiduguri International Airport is set to come alive again following the Federal Government’s approval for its re-opening.

Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha, who made this known on Tuesday, said that the Federal Government resolved to re-open the airport following the seemingly security improvement recorded in recent times.

“It is interesting to announce that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu, has confirmed to me that the Federal Government had issued a directive for the re-opening of the Maiduguri International Airport for commercial activities.

Presidency Debunks Rumours of Employing Senegalese Marabouts to Cleanse Aso Villa Before Buhari Moves in

Earlier this week, there were rumours floating around the Internet that President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to move into the Presidential Villa due to advise from Senegalese Marabouts (spiritualists).

However, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, has debunked the rumour via a statement.

Here is the summary of the statement, as reported by ThisDay:

The presidency expressed “utter embarrassment at such suggestion.”

It said Buhari as a practicing Muslim, believes his fate belongs to God.

According to the statement, no true believer combines faith in God and reliance on the power of ordinary mortals, who can neither protect themselves, nor protect others from the hands of fate.

The statement added that the so-called “spiritual cleansing of the Aso Rock Villa by Senegalese marabouts before President Buhari moves into the Villa” was the figment of the imagination of rumour mongers.

It noted that it was ridiculous to attribute Buhari’s delay in moving into the Villa to any advice from fictitious marabouts.

The statement stressed that renovation works in the Villa was largely responsible for the delay in Buhari’s movement into the Presidential Villa.
