Certificate Saga: Babangida Defends Buhari, Warns Against Ridiculing The Army

Former military President General Ibrahim Babangida yesterday rose in defence of the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, on the genuineness of his secondary school certificate.

Gen. Babangida warned that any attempt to politicise the military would not be in the nation’s interest.

“It is a very dangerous thing to do,” he told The Nationin an interview in Minna.

He said there was no way Buhari would have risen to the rank of a general in the army without possessing the basic educational qualification.

Babangida, who was reacting to the controversy sparked by the certificate in an exclusive interview, said the army, as an institution, subjects all its intakes to proper scrutiny, training and re-training.

He was shocked at the heat generated by the issue and advised those who feel aggrieved to go to court.

He warned that the military should not be ridiculed as it remains,in his opinion, the only institution of national unity and that it is passionate about acquisition of knowledge by its officers.

His words:”The military is one institution that believes in constant learning and training. You receive the initial training from the Staff College. After one year, you go for another round of intensive training that is all encompassing.

“It is one institution that is concerned about knowledge, even in warfare. The military requires you to keep abreast of development in warfare, weaponry and education.

“Perhaps, military is the best institution that is concerned about training and knowledge and about discipline because no officer is considered for promotion without having the prerequisite qualification and must pass the required examinations”.

He cautioned the political class to desist from politicising the military, pointing out that any such attempt will be dangerous for the institution and the nation.

“The military remains the institution of unity. I will not support the idea of politicising the military,” he said.

The former military leader was, however, full of confidence that the military will strive to keep above the scheming of the politicians “as it is capable and will resist any undue attempt to influence it.

“This is nothing but politics. I think those aggrieved should know what to do. Anybody who feels aggrieved should go to court and let the court make a pronouncement that will settle everything”.

AFCON 2015: Ivory Coast Vs Mali Today At 5pm

The Manchester City star, who captains the African giants, needs to up his game according to his coach, who knows that the nation's Afcon fate hangs in the balance

Herve Renard wants to see more from captain Yaya Toure when Cote d'Ivoire attempt to kick-start their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Mali on Saturday.

The Ivorians were one of the pre-tournament favourites for the African showpiece that is being held in Equatorial Guinea.

However, the 1992 champions started Group D with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Guinea, Seydou Doumbia's 72nd-minute equaliser sparing Cote d'Ivoire's blushes.

Coach Renard stated that he felt talismanic skipper Toure appeared jaded in that game and believes the team will struggle if the Manchester City midfielder does not up his performance level.

"I think Yaya was a bit tired at the end of the game so it was better for him to come off, but he is a big competitor so he'll be ready for the second game," Renard said ahead of the encounter with Mali in Malabo.

"He has a big responsibility now, with the captain's armband. I expect a better second game from him than the first one. If he is not able to improve his level it will be difficult for the team."

Renard will have to rejig his forward line after Gervinho was sent off against Guinea for lashing out at Naby Keita in the 58th minute.

The Roma man will now miss the last two group matches through suspension and Renard, while showing some sympathy for the former Arsenal forward's indiscretion, stated that Gervinho was in the wrong.

"I said to him that he shouldn't have done what he did, but I also said to him that I did the same thing when I played football," he added.

"It is the kind of thing that we shouldn't see on a football pitch but sometimes things happen on the pitch and you get a bit carried away by the pressure or the intimidation of the opposition."

Mali have lost their last four meetings with Cote d'Ivoire, including a 1-0 defeat in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.

However, Henryk Kasperczak's side proved they are no pushovers in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Cameroon and were only denied victory by Ambroise Oyongo's 84th-minute leveller.

Mali's goalscorer in that game, Sambou Yatabare, was disappointed to settle for a point, but feels the team can take heart from the draw.

"We had a great game," he said. "We were strong defensively and I am sure we can take that going forward."

Loving Daddy! Kunle Afolayan Makes Daughter's Hair

Actress Toyin Aimakhu’s 11-Months-Old Marriage Crashes Over Infidelity

I am sorry to break this news to you this beautiful Saturday Morning but it is what it is and I exclusively deliver the sad news that actress Toyin Aimahku and her actor hubby Adeniyi Johnson have parted ways!

Insiders allege that the couple have been living apart for over three months but have been trying to hide it from the press..Inside sources say that that Toyin and Adeniyi broke up due to infidelity, which had eaten deep into their marriage.

My source alleges that Toyin used evidence from snooping on her hubby's phone and caught darling husband red handed in hotel rooms several times with different girls...Infact my source quotes the number of times as almost ''300 times red handed''.

The couple have both moved out of their apartment in Lekki and have both moved on but pretending to be still together.....

Only their close friends are aware of their split and the insiders allege that a

reconciliation might not be possible because of the ease with which both walked out and have indicated that that they do not wish to be together.

Adeniyi currently has his facebook status as seperated....that is if he hasnt changed it.

Another source whispers that concerning both ''when there is no respect in a marriage, when couples talk to each other without respect and words are no longer relied upon and love has left behind a sour taste, then its time to check why you married in the first place''.

Toyin and Adeniyi had a low key traditional wedding in Ibadan in February 2013 and on July 8 2013 they signed the dotted lines at the Ikoyi registry.

Their wedding was a celebrated affair on the internet and in the print media.

Toyin and Niyi had no child together before they parted ways.

There is no wound that baba God cannot heal,no crack that he cannot seal.

...even though i pray that God restores what the hungry locust has stolen from them and bring them back together,my prayers will come to nothing if they do not want to be together anymore.I wish them all the best.

JAMB Set To Use 400 Centres For First Computer-Based Test 2015 Exam

According to our source, it was gathered that yesterday, The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Thursday JAMB said the advice became necessary because the sale of forms for the examination commenced since September, 2014 to close on January 30.

“The 2015 UTME application closes on Friday, 30th January, 2015 and all candidates desirous of sitting for the examination are advised to immediately obtain the application documents at the designated banks,” Mr. Benjamin said. “This is to ensure that they get registered and avoid being left out. In view of the above, the board has completed all processes and preparations and has put in place all logistics needed to conduct a hitch-free examination.”

JAMB further said that no fewer than 400 centres would be used for the examination in Nigeria and abroad.

According to the statement, members of other examination bodies in Africa and beyond have indicated interest to understudy the board’s CBT during the examination.

It said the development was an indication of the confidence of the international community in the board’s ability as manifested in the two previous exercises in 2013 and 2014.

The statement urged candidates to be conscious of the fact that the 2015 UTME was only on the CBT mode.

“Candidates are to disregard any contrary information as the examination is scheduled to hold beginning March 4th 2015,” he said.

The statement further advised candidates to shun all acts that were contrary to the conduct of an examination of international standard like the board’s CBT. It warned that the board would not hesitate to impose severe sanction on any candidate found wanting.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the board wishes to state that any candidate who registered twice will have his or her result cancelled,” it said. “JAMB has a mechanism that detects double registration, irrespective of how it is disguised. The board has also made adequate arrangements to ensure that blind candidates sit for the 2015 UTME, using CBT.”

Gunmen Destroy APC Governorship Campaign Venue In Rivers State

The National School Field, venue of an All Progressives Congress, APC, rally set to hold in Okrika Local Government area of Rivers State has been attacked by unknown armed men.

DAILY POST gathered that the gunmen used explosives to destroy the stage, canopies, chairs and other arrangements made for the rally.

The APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside was billed to be in Okrika as part of his campaign trail in the state.

In a distress call put to media houses in Port Harcourt, Director of Media and Publicity of Dakuku’s Greater Together Campaign Organization, Ibim Semenitari said the armed men struck as early as 3am this morning, leaving the venue in wreckage.

Semenitari said the armed men shot sporadically to scare everyone working at the APC venue away before blowing the explosives.

“It was burnt and not gutted by fire. At about 3:45am, armed men whom we don’t know came and started shooting. The boys working at the venue had to run for their lives. At about 4am, they started throwing dynamites.

“As I speak, they have destroyed the stage, the sound system; they destroyed the canopies. They have destroyed everything.

“This is worrisome for us. The APC has continued to conduct itself in the most peaceful manner. The APC is resolved not to fight, the APC is resolved not to use violence because we believe that an election is supposed to be peaceful and credible”.

She expressed uncertainty on the continuation of the campaign in Okrika.

Value Of Naira Falls To 208 Naira Per Dollar

The naira, on Friday, depreciated against the dollar as it traded at N208 from the N191.50 it sold for on Monday, January 19.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the new rate had made the naira to lose N16.50 within five days.

The CBN’s website, however, put the naira against the dollar at N167.50, while the pound sold for N253.20 and the euro stood at N193.89.

The development has resulted into speculation in the market and caused ripple effects on other currencies.

NAN correspondent who visited some bureau de change and black market operators in Lagos said that they could not give rates to the pound sterling and the euro.

Dealers who preferred anonymity said that there was scarcity of dollars in circulation.

They said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had stopped selling forex to the bureaux de change since last year.

The dealers added that the recent review of trading positions for the forex trading to 72 hours also contributed to speculation in the system.

The effect, they added, was that the naira could depreciate further by next week.

NAN recalled that the CBN in November 2014 devalued the naira.

Photo: Former Westlife singer, Mark Feehily now sells tea from a van

Westlife is my 2nd all time favorite boy-band after Boys 2 Men, and Mark Feehily was my favorite singer in the group. He came out later after the group disbanded to say he was gay. Broke my heart. Anyway, to the story, Mark is now selling snacks &coffee from a catering van. That's him in the van.

The 34 year old has set up his own catering business. He travels round festivals with his van and he serves customers food and drinks himself from the back of his truck. When asked about it, Mark said

"It's going really well, we've got loads of interest and we've booked it in with a lot of the music festivals and we're talking about doing some Irish ones as well. People were flabbergasted at the fact that I was in the van making crepes. People kind of have this thing 'Oh, he was in Westlife a few years ago and now he's making tea. It's my business and I love it, anything I get involved in I get involved 110%."

Mark says he hasn't given up on music yet though and is planning to launch a solo career. Westlife disbanded in 2011 after 14 years together. During their career, they notched 26 top 10 hits.

Weekend Joke For Kids

Little April was not the best student in Sunday school.

Usually she slept through the class.

One day the teacher called on her while she was napping,

"Tell me, April, who created the universe?"

When April didn't stir, little Johnny,a boy seated in the

chair behind her, took a pin and jabbed her in the rear.

"GOD ALMIGHTY!" shouted April and the teacher said,

"Very good" and April fell back asleep.

A while later the teacher asked April, "Who is our Lord

and Saviour,"But, April didn't even stir from her slumber.

Once again, Johnny came to the rescue and stuck her

again.

"JESUS CHRIST!" shouted April and the teacher said,

"very good," and April fell back to sleep.

Then the teacher asked April a third question.

"What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third

child?"

And again, Johnny jabbed her with the pin.

This time April jumped up and shouted, "IF YOU STICK

THAT F*****G THING IN ME ONE MORE TIME, I'LL

BREAK IT IN HALF AND STICK IT UP YOUR ARSE!"

The Teacher fainted.

Twitter user reveals the current state of Ibadan airport (photos)

How can this be an airport in a country like Nigeria? When photos of the under developed airport hit the net late 2013, people assumed that there will be a change in its infrastructure soon. Well, it looks nothing much has changed. The more we highlight this, the more the government is pushed to do something about it. More pics after the cut...

(Pictured) UK Wants To Deport 5 year Old Nigerian Boy Rafeeq Atanda, Mum Pleads

A Nigerian mum on Wednesday pleaded with the UK Govt to allow her son remain in the country hours before he was due to be deported to Nigeria, a country his mother says he’s never lived in.

5 year old Rafeeq Atanda (pictured above) and his mother Bola Fatunbi, were held on Wednesday night at the immigration center in London ahead on the scheduled deportation yesterday. Looks like they may even have been deported.

“Speaking from the centre, Bola told the Evening Chronicle: “I feel safe in Gateshead, but we have no one in Nigeria. Rafeeq was born here, he goes to school here and is doing well, it is so very hard for us. There are so many kidnappings and frightening things with Boko Haram happening in Nigeria, it would not be safe.”

From UK Mirror

Fighting back tears, Bola, 30, told how she had first come to the UK following the death of her parents and brothers and sisters in a car tragedy in Nigeria in 1997.

She said: “It was so hard but I thought I’d have a better life here and we have made a lot of friends in Gateshead.”

Gateshead MP Ian Mearns has now asked the Home Office to urgently reconsider their decision to deport the little boy.

Despite being born in this country, Rafeeq faces being removed from the UK with Bola. The Chronicle understand Mr Mearns contacted the Home Office on Wednesday, requesting a barrier be placed on the planned deportation, citing concerns over Rafeeq’s health.

He received a response stating: “We are aware of the health issues regarding this family and have been working with various services to ensure the family’s needs are met during removal.
