Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has emerged the leading candidate for the prestigious position of Oxford Professor of Poetry, a 300-year-old position regarded by many as the top academic role in the United Kingdom.

The Britain’s Guardian newspaper is reporting that the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature winner has received over 90 nominations, 40 more than the required number, from Oxford graduates and looks set to replace Geoffery Hill, who will complete his five year tenure this summer.
To be named the Oxford professor of poetry, candidates needs to receive at least 50 nominations. Mr. Soyinka has at least 36 nominations more than his closest rival for the position, Ian Gregson, a poet, literary critic and professor of creative writing at Bangor University who was backed by 54 graduates. The Oxford professor of poetry was first held in 1708 by Joseph Trapp. Past occupiers of the post include prominent poets like WH Auden, Seamus Heaney, Matthew Arnold and Paul Muldon.

In 2009, the position was plagued by controversy when it was revealed that the winner, Ruth Padel, the first woman elected into the post, had spoken to journalist about alleged sexual harassment of her closest rival, Nobel laureate, Derek Walcott.

UK Prime Minister Elected For A Second Term

image

David Cameron will be returned for a second term as the UK Prime Minister with an expanded mandate for his Conservative Party.

The BBC is projecting that the Conservatives will come within a single vote of being able to govern alone.

But even if they come up short, Cameron will have a clear mandate to put together a government with the support of minor parties. The scale of Cameron’s win has come as a shock, particularly for Labour leader Ed Miliband who had
hoped to oust the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.
Miliband conceded it had been a “very disappointing and difficult night for the Labour Party”.

Labour has relinquished dozens of seats and failed to grab key marginals. It has been all but wiped out by the Scottish National Party in seats north of the English border.

The Liberal Democrats suffered even heavier losses and party leader Nick Clegg appeared to indicate he will step down.

The Conservatives, on the other hand, have picked up a few seats. A Government in the UK needs 326 votes in the House of Commons to command a majority.

In its latest projection, the BBC predicted the Conservatives would win 325 seats, Labour 232, the SNP 56, Liberal Democrats 12, Democratic Unionist Party 8 and UKIP 2.

Ohaneze Ndigbo said President Jonathan Decieved them

The official pan-Igbo socio-political forum, The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, told the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, that President Jonathan lied to the Igbo nation about awarding contract for the construction of Second Niger bridge and major federal roads in the South East.

Listing Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway and Enugu-Umuahia-Aba Expressway, the committee said that up till now, work was yet to start at the sites.
It added that no financial commitment had been made by the Federal Government to commence the construction of the Second Niger Bridge, saying that those were deceptive campaign messages to Ndigbo.

According to Vanguard, The committee made the revelation during its congratulatory visit to Buhari at the Defence House in Abuja.

The leader of the delegation, Chief Ralph, who spoke on behalf of the Committee, however, told the President-elect that the South-east was a silent supporter of his presidential ambition.

He also stated that the region would fully support the incoming government to succeed, urging him to reconstruct Nigeria.

Revisitation of the report of Oputa Panel and the issue of abandoned property in the country were also other matters the committee presented before Buhari.
He said: “This is a delegation of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, who proudly took side with you, convinced that what Nigeria needs today is the leadership that you will provide to rebuild our battered and pulverised nation.

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee is fully aware of the difficult and daunting work that has befallen on your shoulders. And we are here to offer our commitment that Ndigbo will stand shoulder to shoulder with you on this mission to reconstruct our nation.

“We are also aware that our cry of marginalization is not unique to our region, but ours stands out as an SOS case as a region criminally neglected and abandoned by the outgoing administration.

“During your campaign tours, you saw things for yourself and needless reminding Your Excellency that South-east is an emergency case. You drove through the badly neglected and impassable Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway and the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba Expressway, needless to mention the Oba-Okigwe Highway.

“Contrary to the election claims by the outgoing administration, no appreciable work is going on these roads, information has shown that no financial arrangement has been firmed up for the Second Nigeria Bridge. The Oputa Panel report has been gathering dust and Ndigbo have pleaded for the revisitation of the so-called abandoned property in Nigeria and its collateral reparation demand.

“One common denominator is that unknown to a vast majority of Nigerians, Ndigbo were the silent majority supporters of General Muhammadu Buhari, GMB, but a twist of “what is wrong with Nigerian” electoral result cannot prove it.

Obioha also made a case for the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to be ceded to the South-east.

“This body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, is a baby conceived by Chris Ngige and delivered by Chief Mbazulike Ameachi and handed over to Ndigbo to check excesses of the people who were just agents of a pre-determined agenda.

“Your Excellency, you were aware that the South-east was targeted by the PDP rigging machine which produced an election result that denied the zone of even a single senator and only three non-ranking House of Representatives members.

“Ndigbo request that you adopt the principle of necessity to give the zone the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation which is your prerogative and in addition, a position of one Presiding Officer in the House of Representatives,” he stated.
According to the leader, Buhari assured them of equity.

“He gave us assurance that he is going to treat the entire nation as his constituency for all and we believe him,” he said
Also speaking, a member of the delegation, Senator Chris Ngige said that though the party was yet to make a categorical statement on the issue of SGF, he was optimistic that it would eventually consider the South- east.

“Well, I was in the first delegation that came the last time, but we cannot say for now that our party has zoned the position of SGF to the South-east because we have a Senate committee that is still working on distribution of party offices, executive and that of legislature which is where we have the Senate President,
Deputy Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker of the House of the Representative as presiding officers.

Our correspondent gathered that on his way back from the school, he stopped by in Lagos and passed the night at his friend’s house in Ijede, Ikorodu. He reportedly left for Kanji around 9am on Monday.

The father, Oluwaseun, said his son called him when he was at a motor park, informing him that he was in a bus en route to Kanji. He added that he had been basking in excitement and waiting for his son’s arrival to celebrate the result.

He said, “He told me on the phone that he was at a motor park and that the bus would soon take off.
“One hour later, I tried to get across to him, but his line indicated that it was not reachable. I became confused when it was evening and I did not hear from him.

“I called his friend’s mother, but she was confused too. We have been in darkness since then. We have no idea of where he could have gone to. I just pray he is safe wherever he may be. I jubilated when he informed me that he had collected his result and I promised him a special celebration. He was preparing for his

Her mother has been crying.”

Man was raped by three women at Gunpoint and stole his siemen

A man was kidnapped at gunpoint in South Africa and raped by three women who collected his semen in a cool box before abandoning their victim – and the method is part of a growing trend.
The 33-year-old man gave the women directions when they pulled up in a black BMW. Suddenly, one of the women armed with a gun got out and forced him into the back of the car at gunpoint.

The trio then drove him 500km away and fondled him in the back of the car but he did not become aroused, so they forced him to drink an ‘unknown substance’ from a bottle to aid him.

They then raped the man repeatedly and collected his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler
box. The man was then kicked out of the car, 500 km away from where they picked him up in the Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with the stolen sperm.

The exact same method is being used by women in Gauteng, who are also forcing men to drink from a bottle and stealing their semen but no arrests have been made.

Sowetan Live reports that Constable Mncedi Mbombo said:
‘As he was busy pointing out the directions, one lady came out and pointed a gun at him and forced him into the car.
‘They drove into a thoroughfare 500km away. They parked the car and fondled him to get an erection but his penis could not get erect. They then forced him to drink an unknown substance from a bottle. This got him aroused quickly even though he was still scared and didn’t want to have sex.

This is really confusing to us because we have never heard of such a thing before. The man was fully conscious throughout his ordeal and he is still traumatised.’
Police have now opened a rape investigation.

Woman Miraculously Escapes from Ritual Killers in Ogun State

The Ogun State Police Command has uncovered another suspected ritual killers’ den in Unity and Peace Estate along Itele-Lafenwa Road, Ota in the Ado Odo-Ota Local Government Area. Thanks to the 28-year-old lady, who escaped after being kept in an uncompleted building in the estate, bound hands and feet.

The lady was said to have been abducted, blindfolded, gagged and dumped in the den. She was reportedly told by her captors that they would come for her in the night on Wednesday. But she was struggled to free herself and rolled towards the entrance of the building.

It was learnt that some passersby in the
area saw her and came to her rescue. Policemen from the Itele
Police Station, who were later invited to the scene, were said to have cordoned off the area.

Punch Metro reports that when the policemen combed the surroundings of the uncompleted building, decomposing bodies of two female victims were said to have been found. Suspected bones of other victims also littered the place.
The lady told PUNCH Metrothat she had met one of her captors two weeks before the incident, and they started a relationship.

She explained that the man called her on Monday that he had secured a contract of N1.5m for her at a site in the estate. She added that the man told her that she would supply bags of cement worth that amount.

The victim said on getting to the site, the lover, was joined by another person, who abducted her.
She said:

“I met one of the ritual killers about two weeks ago and we started a relationship. The guy told me that he was a contractor and promised to link me up with people who would give me juicy contracts.
The man called me two days ago and told me about a contract worth about N1.5m, but I could not meet him because I was sick. The man later came to my residence in Lagos and still persuaded me to come for the deal.

On getting to the Unity and Peace Estate, we headed for an uncompleted building. One other person joined us. When we got to the building, I saw that the house had been plastered and the floor had been cemented.

But both of them pounced on me, beat me up and attempted to rape me. I was having my monthly flow and that dissuaded them. They then tied my hands and legs, blindfolded and gagged me. They promised to come back at night to complete their assignment. It was a miracle that passers-by rescued me.”

Some residents of the community, who spoke with journalists, said they were startled at the discovery. Some of them claimed that they always smelt some unpleasant odour from the area, but believed it emanated from a poultry farm nearby.

It was gathered that the policemen had arrested the owner of the building, while the suspected ritual killers had fled.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He said two decomposing bodies and some human skeletons were recovered from the scene. He said:

“The command has taken over the building and our men will take some samples from the scene for forensic analysis to assist in investigation.”

Coach beaten up by a Nigerian man For not supporting His Son’s team

A Nigerian father, Martin Ogazi, 39, has been accused of beating up a rival coach while cheering on his son’s junior football team, Old Bailey court heard today.

The beating allegedly left coach Stewart Collins, nursing a broken nose and two black eyes in a touchline brawl over aggressive tackling.

According to UK Daily Mail: Ogazi said he was set upon by Mr Collins, his wife Claire, and his sister Tracey. He claimed he only threw punches to defend himself.
The alleged attack happened on the touchline of a match between rival under-nine sides Eversley United and Danson Sports FC.

When Ogazi’s son, an Eversley player, committed a foul, Ogazi is said to have shouted ‘give him more of that’ across the pitch.

Mr Collins, the Danson Sports manager, objected and went over to Ogazi to tell him to stop encouraging his son to hurt the opposition.

Mr Collins said he was polite and courteous, but was met with a barrage of punches from the defendant.
Ogazi, who regularly cheers on his son from the sidelines, told the court: ‘At all points in this incident from the approach of Mr Collins to the end, I was acting in self defence.’

He said Collins, who was jabbing his finger at him, was the aggressor, and reacted angrily to him pushing his hand away.

Ogazi said he was then attacked from behind by Collins’ wife and sister, was grabbed round the waist and started swinging his arms to get free.
He said: ‘I was being punched and kicked, and I mostly punched my way out.’
Ogazi is accused of assaulting the two women during the incident, on March 23 last year, as well as attacking another team manager, Steve Ristow, as he tried to break up the fight.
