Jonathan In Closed-Door Meeting With Abdusalami, Thabo Mbeki

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday met behind closed-doors with a former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (retd.), and a former South African President, Thabo Mbeki.

The meeting was held inside the President’s official residence inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

None of them spoke with journalists at the end of the parley.

The meeting however was not unconnected with preparations for the forthcoming general elections slated for March 18 and April 11.

It will be recalled that Abubakar is the chairman of the National Peace Committee for 2015 General Elections.

The former military leader had on Saturday met with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the elections.

Others who attended the Saturday meeting were the service chiefs including the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice Marshal Alex Badeh; the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, and leadership of the major political parties.

The meeting also had in attendance the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III; Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan ; Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah; former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe; Special Adviser to the President on Inter- Party Relations, Senator Ben Obi.

Abubakar might have used the opportunity of the Sunday meeting to brief the President of the outcome of the Saturday meeting.

How To Get Clear White Eyes Naturally

Bright and sparkling eyes are desirable, it shows good health and radiates through the face where bloodshot and dull eyes are usually lacklustre, tired and could be a sign of il health or plain exhaustion.

Tired, dull and bloodshot eyes can be as a result of fatigue, lack of sleep, long working hours, continuously staring at a bight computer screen for instance, nutritional deficiency, excessive drinking, dehydration, smoking and even serious health problems like a weak liver.

While an alarming case in this situation should be reported to a medical practitioner, these simple ways work to clear the eyes.

1. Eye Exercise

There are easy ways to relax and light up the eyes which improve blood circulation and ease off eye straining.

The first eye exercise is to shut the eyes and squeeze them tightly. Then open them quickly, as wide as possible. Repeat until the eyes begin to water. This will help your eyes look and feel fresh and bright.

You can also move a pen or pencil horizontally and vertically in front of your eyes, keeping your eyes focused on the tip of the pen. Do this exercise for 10 to 15 minutes daily.

Another option is to rub the palms of your hands together until they become warm, then place them over your closed eyelids for a few minutes.

2. Tea Bags

Both green and black tea bags are known to reduce eye strain and restore the natural glow and brightness to the eyes. The antioxidant properties in tea bags help reduce swelling around the eyes.

-Steep 2 tea bags in a mug of hot water for 5 minutes.

-Remove the tea bags, squeeze out the excess water and put them in the fridge for about 10 mins or a little more.

-Place the chilled teabags over closed eyes and let them sit for 5 minutes.

-Repeat this often.

3. Cucumber or Potato slices

Placing slices of cucumber or potato over the eyes works wonders for the eyes. They both noticeably help brighten the eyes as well as reduce puffiness and under eye circles.

-Cut a few thick slices off cucumber or potato and put them in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes.

-Put the chilled slices over the closed eyelids until they become warm.

-Rinse eyes with water.

-Repeat this process often.

Lastly

4. Always keep the Eyes hydrated

One simple secret to get clear eyes is to keep your eyes hydrated for proper lubrication.

Splash the eyes with room-temperature water a few times daily. This will help get rid of dull and tired eyes.

Avoid staring at the computer screen for too long to prevent the eyes from drying out.

Blink often as well to prevent the eyes from drying out.

Also, drink plenty of water and eat water-based fruits and vegetables.

Presidential Election: 25,000 Pastors To Pray For Buhari And His Running Mate In Lagos.

About 25,000 pastors and evangelists in the South-West are to hold a special prayer session for the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

According to the coordinator of the programme, Bishop Kayode Williams, the ministers of God will come together to seek divine support for Buhari and Osinbajo ahead of the March 28 presidential election.

“We are four spearheading this prayer session: My humble self, Rev. Moses Iloh, Archbishop Magnus Atilade and Deacon Ayo Opadokun. We are against wrong information being fed members of the public about Buhari,” Williams was quoted by Vanguard to have said.

“For those of us that followed the track record of Buhari while he was in public service, we know that this man is not a religious bigot.

Buhari is an upright man and not anti-Christ as some people want to portray him,” he declared.

Williams, who described the prayer session as a unique event, urged Nigerians not to use religion to cause division in the country.

“First and foremost, we should see ourselves as one. We are all Nigerians. We should not allow politics to divide us or cause bitterness among us. We should love one another. It is wrong for anybody or group to say Christians are against Buhari – to us,

“Buhari is a righteous Nigerian, and Christianity preaches righteousness, and we want righteous people in leadership, and this is why we are organizing this prayer for Buhari to be the next leader of this country”, he stated.

He reminded Nigerians that the country is a secular state, hence there is need for people to be tolerant of one another’s faith, views and opinions.

Buhari, and Osinbajo and other eminent personalities are expected to attend the prayer service as special guests.

NPFL: Enyimba Vs Akwa United (Live Match!)

The Glo Premier League season is

back and what a fixture to kick

things off for these teams.

Enyimba International of Aba host

neighbours Akwa United on

Sunday 8th of March and going

by history, this is a fixture of no

dull moment both on and off the

pitch.

The main event is 4:15pm Sunday

evening when these two teams

will go head to head seeking

maximum points. We bring to you

an array of stars to watch from

both sides, key battles that could

decide the encounter.

Ezekiel Bassey v Nnamso Edo

Following in the footsteps of

record goalscorer Mfon Udoh and

Femi Thomas, Bassey switched

sides in preseason to join the

Peoples Elephant. His displays

especially during the Super-4

Invitational Tournament were

promising and surely a sign of

good things to come. Pacy, quick

feet and full of tricky, Bassey has

an opportunity to win over the

hearts of the Aba fans who will as

usual pack out the Enyimba

Stadium to see him make a debut

for Enyimba on Sunday. In other

words, the brotherly hugs and

high fives with his former

teammates will surely wait till

after the game.

Standing in his way will be the

energetic, strong and versatile

Nnamso Edo. His nose for long

range volleys and free kicks is a

nightmare to any opposition.

Enyimba will be cautious

conceding free-kick yards off the

area, particular when they reflect

on his rattling 25 yarder that

sealed a win for the Promise

Keepers in Uyo a couple of

seasons ago. Edo however

understands the quality of the

man facing him on the flanks and

this may limit his attacking forays.

An exciting one for the neutrals

watching these two former

teammates try to edge it over

each other.

Ifeanyi Anaemena v Aniekpeno

Udoh

Few Enyimba fans will forget the

goalless draw with Giwa FC last

season. It was a game many

defined as the low point of last

season and it eventually cost the

manager his job. At the heart of

the visiting defence that day was a

tall well built centre-half, Ifeanyi

Anaemena who gave the Enyimba

strikers a torrid afternoon. The

reward he eventually got was a

move to Enyimba in pre-season. A

strong commanding presence,

Anaemena already looks at home

in the Enyimba defence. Played all

but one game at the Super-4, He

surely looks the mould of previous

Enyimba center backs.

Sunday's game pits him against

Aniekpeno Udoh whose rise has

been steady since joining the

Promise Keepers from Amateur

side, Hill FC. His strong and

captivating performance in the

closing stages of last season

simply won over the hearts of

fans of the Uyo side. The big

striker who is being likened to

Chelsea’s Didier Drogba is poised

to give Anaemena and his co

defenders a torrid time on Sunday

but you cannot help but admit that

it is a good matchup. Akwa

United’s hope for goals or a

positive outcome in the epic

fixture lies on the power and pace

of Aniekpeno.

Chima Uluocha v Ini Akpan

Kadiri Ikhana will slip in yet

another new recruit into his

starting eleven on Sunday. The

coach ripped state rivals Abia

Warriors of their influential

captain and midfield general

Chima Uluocha and his first task

for the league season will be to do

a tidy 'dirty job' in heart of the

Enyimba midfield. Shielding the

defence is one, but also vital will

be his attacking contribution.

Chima is a natural leader, so

expect his usual 'barking and

pointing' throughout the game.

As an influential captain and

source of inspiration to his

teammates, Ini Akpan is expected

to rally his colleagues for a swipe

at the Peoples Elephant in the

opening fixture. The schemer, who

was injured for most of the second

half of last season is fully fit and

back to action. His wealth of

experience and versatility will be

very key to delivering quality

passes required by the strikers for

goals to emanate.

In all we are set for a feisty tasty

encounter on Sunday. The game is

live on SuperSport 9 from 4pm.

Only 10,000 Persons Were Involved In APC’s 1 Million-man March – Fani-Kayode Speaks Again.

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPCO) has slammed the All Progressives Congress (APC) over what it believes was a flopped one-million-man-march organised in Lagos.

“The fact that what the APC boasted would be a one-million-man march could only attract about 10,000 persons is a reflection of the pitiful state of delusion that they are suffering from,” a statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said.

“They have lost touch with reality and with the people of the state over whom they have maintained a wicked and ungodly economic and political stranglehold for all of 16 years. But the people of Lagos have now seen through their deception and have decided to reject them at the polls this time round.

“The Lagos people have amply demonstrated their anger against the APC and its leader.

“It is interesting to read that Tinubu asked the people at the flopped march to march for their freedom. I agree with him and the people will obey him by freeing themselves on April 11 from the political and economic bondage into which Tinubu has put them since 1999,” he said.

Africa’s Future Billionaires Will Be Farmers – Agriculture Minister Says.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina says Africa’s future millionaires and billionaires will make their money from agriculture as the governments marshal out plans to unlock wealth from the soil.

Adesina made his prediction on Friday in Abuja as the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) launched the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program Phase 1 (ATASP-1) at the federal capital territory.

The ATASP-1 is financed by AfDB to the tune of $170 million and aims at creating additional incomes to an increased number of producers and entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector in Nigeria by providing about 120,000 jobs along the value chain of priority commodities. An additional 20 million tons of key commodity food crops including cassava, rice, and sorghum will be added to the domestic food supply each year.

A significant part of the project is developing outreach models with young entrepreneurs in agriculture, “IITA youth agripreneurs”.

The Agripreneurs are promoting agriculture among other young people in their regions through peer education, training and demonstration of agricultural best practices, and business skills in value chain development.

Adesina underlined that “Africa’s future millionaires and billionaires will make their money from agriculture,” as the governments marshal out plans to unlock wealth from the soil.

He estimated that the bulk of this new wealthy population will be made up of young people adept at creating jobs for millions in each African country and bringing business opportunities to rural communities all across the continent.

He therefore urged the youth to stop seeing agriculture as a tool for development but as a business.

“Today, major local and international investors are investing in this sector. The number of seed companies alone has risen dramatically and the banks are lending to the sector more than ever before,” he said.

Buhari And His APC Kids Do Not Want Chibok Girls Found – PDPPCO.

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPCO) says the All Progressives Congress (APC), its presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State and the party’s National Publicity Director, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, should be held responsible if the abducted Chibok girls are not found.

The campaign organisation was reacting to an APC statement, yesterday, which described as callous, morbid and insensitive the comments by President Goodluck Jonathan that the abducted girls are still alive hinged on the belief that Boko Haram had not displayed their bodies to prove their death.

“Whilst the majority of Nigerians are overjoyed by the fact that the President has given us hope by saying that the girls are still alive, Lai Mohammed and the APC are not happy,” a statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said.

“The truth is that they do not want those girls to be found and neither do they care about their welfare or their safety. We say this because this was a man, and a party that complained and protested at the fact that Boko Haram was proscribed by the Federal Government last year.

“Lai Mohammed proclaimed that the proscription was unjust and unconstitutional. We have always believed that Buhari, Lai Mohammed, Governor Shettima and the APC know far more about the whereabouts of the Chibok girls and the activities of Boko Haram than they have cared to admit.

“Let it be clearly understood that if anything happens to those girls and if they are not produced at the soonest, we will hold Lai Mohammed, Buhari and the APC responsible,” Fani-Kayode said.

Breaking News!!! Evil Terrorist Group Boko Haram Joins ISIS.

According to Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the call was rejected because of the proximity of Nigeria’s elections.

“The request by Nigerian authorities for a phone conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President was refused by the Monarch who deemed it inappropriate on grounds of the upcoming elections in Nigeria,” a communique stated.

“The Nigerian authorities request for the phone conversation and the sending of a Nigerian envoy to the Kingdom is more akin to an attempt to gain Muslim votes than a normal diplomatic act,”added the statement.

Revealed!! How Famous Nigerian Pastors Met And "Toasted" Their Wives

ARTICLE EXCLUSIVELY COMPILED BY LALASTICLALA

Some have wondered how the pastors whom they look up to actually met and "toasted" their wives. Well don't wonder much, as I bring to you a list of some famous Nigerian Pastors and how they met and wooed their wives.

PROPHET TB JOSHUA

How I met TB Joshua… He proposed to me 45 minutes after we met – wife

The popular Prophet has a very beautiful wife. The wife narrated how the Prophet wooed her. Hear her.. .

The year you met

Twenty three years ago, I visited a sister somewhere at Ikotun-Egbe, and, then they were talking about a particular man, a prophet to be precise. It was a kind of meeting to be precise. And it’s like everybody in that gathering, or at least half of the people in the room, had actually visited him. So, they were saying a lot of good things about him. I was thrilled. At the end of the whole thing, I called a sister outside and asked whether she could take me to the prophet. I didn’t ask to go there out of curiosity. I actually needed a guide at that point in time.

And before then, you had not told him anything about yourself?

No, we were just looking at each other until he, at a time, wrote my name on the piece of paper. So, we started talking. He told me a lot of things about myself, both things that I knew, and those that I never knew. I was shocked. He told me about my family, about my past, my present and my future. Altogether, we spent about 45 minutes. At the end of the whole thing, he spoke to me in Yoruba and said: Joo ma binu o. Ma ro pe bi mo se nba gbogbo eniyan ti o ba wa s’odo mi soro ni eleyi o. Mi o ni ale, mi o dee fee ni ale. Sugbon, se oo fe mi? (Transliterated, this means: Please, don’t be annoyed. Don’t think this is how I talk to everyone that comes to me. I don’t have a concubine, and I don’t want to have a concubine. But can you marry me?)

Just like that?

Just like that. It was strange, but that gives us an insight into what the Scripture says that the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. I think that was it. That was how I met him. Some months later, I asked him why he thought it was right seeing a lady for the first time and going on to propose to her. He said he had seen me four days before that very day.

http://ift.tt/1wRi4QP

TUNDE BAKARE

How did you and your wife meet?

I was in the office, El Shaddai Chambers, my last office after I left Rotimi Williams, when one of my friends, late Segun Onabule, came in, bringing the news that his wife just had a baby and there was a party for it. A bank was at the lower floor of my office. He said a lady who worked at that bank, was invited by one of his friends to the party. So, he wanted to stop to say, “hello.” He saw me in the chambers, and I was seeing him off when I saw this lady, (who later became my wife), whom he said attended the party.

Another day was when my friend Jide came to my office. His father had died and he wanted to change his old notes into new notes before the funeral. He asked me to be of assistance since I worked close to a bank. I took the money and I gave it to this lady to help me get new notes. It was on Thursday. I got back to the chambers and my boss told me that I would be handling a case in Port Harcourt, I ran to the airport, flew to Port Harcourt, handled the matter. On Friday, I returned to Lagos and I went straight to the bank, but the lady had closed for the day. Luckily, she left a note. I took the note and went with my friend and located the house address in Ikoyi. When we knocked, a six-footer man answered with a husky voice. I humbly answered and stated my mission; I later found out that he was her father. I collected the money and left. I learnt that he called his daughter and asked; ‘who is this man?’ she answered him that there were two, one tall and the other short. Jide is taller than I. He asked her, the short one. She told him that, he just met and asked her to change old notes to new ones, that is all, there was nothing between us. He told her that as soon as he came in, ‘I saw an illumination around him and the spirit of the Lord told me that he would be your husband.’ It was later she told me that I was the first man her father would allow to come inside the house. So, my father in-law knew first before anybody.

After that, we didn’t talk again. One day she walked in to the chambers to do notary public thing. Then I was distributing some telephone tracks. I gave her one and she asked if I was a Christian, I told her that I was born again. From there I spoke to her to dedicate her life to Christ. And one day it was revealed to me that she would be my wife and when I spoke to her, she said, ‘What, my father said so the day I came to their house ’. That is the story.

AYO ORITSEJAFOR

"I Went With A Friend For Him To Pray For Us, Then The Holy Spirit Said He's My Husband - Wife

The wife of Pastor Ayodele Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Presiding Pastor of the Word of Life Bible Church. While discussing with KEHINDE OYETIMI, Pastor (Mrs) Helen Oritsejafor, spoke about how she met her husband.

Your husband while granting us an interview gave an interesting story of how you guys met. What is your own side of the story?

It appears you never gave him any resistance.

My friend told me that a man of God was around and that she would like us to call on him so that we could be prayed for, I agreed. When we got there and Papa stepped into the room where we were, I was very captivated by this man of God. Customarily with my training, when a man steps into an area, it is immodest for the woman to get up and greet. You could greet while seated. It was amazing to know that when Papa stepped in, I was on my feet. After a while, he prayed for us. At the point of prayer, it was as if I was taken to his side and I heard a voice saying ‘this is your husband.’ He was only praying generally for us.

I went with my friends for him to pray for us and then I met my husband in the process. I never planned to marry a pastor. I was already exposed to people as pastors and I saw what a lot of them go through. But when he showed up, he captivated me with his physique and personality. That was not my arrangement in life. The Holy Spirit ministered to me at that point that he would be my husband.

I was not the only person he was praying for at that moment. When that happened, I decided to put myself on a fast for one week. Because then, the first thing that came to my mind was that God I never planned to marry a pastor. I was doing very well in my career. I was in business and a director in a bank; I was doing quite well before I met him. It was a rude shock to me. At the seventh day of my prayer, I had a call and it turned out to be him, introducing himself.

That was how the relationship started. It was quite a struggle because I remember, I was wondering what would be of me. But God spoke to me specifically that that was his will for me. I have never regretted that since then. I am so glad I married him.

Your father never raised any objection?

He was very happy when I was going to marry him. The first thing he asked me was ‘Do you love him.’ I said ‘Yes I do.’ Then he asked ‘Does he love you?’ I said yes. Then he asked ‘Can you take a bullet for him?’ I said ‘Yes I could.’ Then he said ‘If that is it, then you have my blessing.

BISHOP MIKE OKONKWO

I Was Very Shy, Didn't Have The Boldness To Woo Her, Sent My Sister To Woo Her For Me - Bishop Okonkwo

Bishop Mike Okonkwo is the presiding pastor of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) and he is married to Bishop Peace.

How long have you been married?

Mike: This is our 34th year. We got married in 1980.

When and where did you meet?

Mike: We met in the church, at the United Church of Christ. It was at the youth fellowship.

Was there any opposition when you wanted to marry her?

Mike: No, there was none. Everybody in my family loves her.

Peace: Then, he was not earning any salary and had resigned from a bank job. He had already turned a pastor when I wanted to marry him and my people were concerned and asked if he would be able to feed me and train our children. But I went with a child’s faith and it paid off.

What was the attraction?

Mike: I was a very shy person and found it difficult to speak to women. When I saw her, I fell in love but we were like cat and dog in the same youth fellowship. When the Lord laid it on me to approach her for marriage, I didn’t have the boldness and I told my sister, Rev. Mrs. Iloh, who had developed a relationship with her, to help me. Later, I told my parents and they were happy about it.

Peace: I felt he was arrogant at that time because he was driving his father’s car. Then, he came to the fellowship and would be fiddling with the car keys in his hand! But I noticed that he is a very transparent, honest and serious-minded person. He is very caring too.

How did he propose?

Peace: The sister spoke to me. He gave his sister a gift to give to me. She said to me, “My brother likes you and he wants to marry you.” I said, “Okay.” Later he told me, “I like you and I will like to marry you.” Again, I said, ‘Okay’. Then, we quarrelled a lot and anytime he said anything, I would oppose him. Not because he was not right but I felt he was proud.

Jonathan Receives Royal Blessings In Osun As Ooni, Monarchs Demand Creation Of Oduduwa State.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, on Saturday, demanded a total representation of the South-West in the cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan and the creation of Oduduwa State with Ile Ife as its headquarters.

The monarch made the requests among others when the president led notable chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, including the National Chairman, Adamu Muazu, on a visit to his palace in Ile Ife, Osun State.

About 50 other traditional rulers from Osun State and environs were also present to receive the president and his entourage.

The Ooni delegated the Orangun of Oke Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, to speak on his behalf. He said, “We want total representation. There are ongoing projects in Osun State and we know there is paucity of fund but we want you to finish all the projects”.

Commending the President, Oba Ibitoye Adeseun, the monarch of Iresi, said the transformation agenda of the administration and the renewed war against Boko Haram insurgents were laudable.

He added, “Ife and Ijesa are large enough to form a state of their own.

We want you to create Oduduwa State with its headquarters in Ile Ife. We also seek the implementation of the Confab report. We throw our weight behind you”.

The Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adeniran, assured Jonathan of the support of the royal fathers and the residents of the state in the coming polls.

He said, “Be rest assured that Obas and indigenes of Osun State are solidly behind you”.

The Olufi of Gbongan, Oba Adetoyese Oyeniyi, also told President Jonathan that the Gbongan-Iwo-Oyo State boundary has not been completed but was reported to have been completed.

The Ooni prayed for success for Jonthan in the March 28 presidential poll.

In his response, an elated President Jonathan promised the monarchs that he would correct all the lapses observed by his administration especially the low representation of the south-west people in his government.

In apparent reference to the Speakership position of the House of Representatives, which was originally zoned to the Southwest by the PDP but was eventually lost to the North-West, Jonathan said he would not allow such lapse to repeat itself if given the opportunity to rule the nation for another four years.

“There will be political opportunities for the people in the South-West, we will correct all the lapses. People from the south-west will play key role and whatever is due them will be given”, he assured.

The president also promised to implement the report of the 2014 Confab, saying the restructuring of the nation as contained in the report was more important than building infrastructure which he said his administration would also not relent in doing.

He said, “If you build infrastructure, they will collapse one day.

We will continue to build infrastructure but if you make significant changes in restructuring the country, that is a significant and sustainable development”.

It also said about 650,000 other Nigerians are currently internally displaced due for the same reason.

Adoke said, “Since the insurgency began, close to 650,000 Nigerians have been internally displaced in the North Eastern part of Nigeria; and another one million, as refugees in neighbouring countries of Cameroun, Chad and Niger. This situation has posed grave humanitarian situations in the affected areas including the neighbouring countries”.

The minister noted with satisfaction the recent success achieved by security forces and the increased level of cooperation at regional and sub-regional level to raise a multi-national force of 8,700 involving Chad, Niger, Cameroun and Benin by the African Union.

Bomb Attacks: Shettima Cuts Short Campaign Visit, Seeks Prayers For Peace.

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday cut short his campaign trip across the state as a result of the bomb attacks on Maiduguri, the state capital.

The governor, who was in Marama in Hawul Local Government Area in the southern part of the state on a campaign trip and to inaugurate the Food for All Initiative in the area, left the venue of the occasion at about 3pm when he was informed of the unfortunate attacks, which killed over 50 persons.

The governor, however, did not depart the ground until an Imam and a pastor prayed for the peace of the land, the repose of the dead and the quick recovery of the injured.

Speaking from Marama, the Chairman of Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Grema Terab, said, “It was unfortunate (these incidents) in Maiduguri today”.

“I am in Marama with the governor to launch the Food for All Initiative, where we are targeting to feed 1,000 in Hawul Local Government Area but heard the sad event in Maiduguri. Our men are at present on a rescue operation and the evacuation of the dead.

“I am yet to be informed of the number of casualties at the three spots.

“The mood is sad here and the governor had to cut short his campaign, he asked for prayers from both Christian and Muslim clerics at about 3pm when the news filtered in here”.

Brain-Dead Buhari ‘Running Away’ From Debate With Jonathan – Presidency.

The Presidency has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of avoiding a debate with his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart and incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Presidency alleged that Buhari and his campaign organisation had rebuffed all entreaties to get the former head of state to debate with President Jonathan.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, made the allegation in a piece entitled ‘We challenge Buhari to a debate’.

Abati said, “The man to blame for this denial is General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress. Getting him to debate the incumbent, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has been an uphill task.

“To say that the man is scared, practically running away from an opportunity to debate his ideas against the incumbent’s, is to be charitable. He doesn’t want it. Every effort to get him to the podium has been rebuffed by him and his handlers”.

He added that while Jonathan accepted invitations to two presidential debates before the elections were rescheduled, “Buhari was not interested” in any of them.

The presidential spokesperson noted that every Nigerian would love to see the PDP and APC presidential candidates in a debate, being the main contenders in the election.

According to him, that would be good for our democracy.

Abati recalled that the first group that approached Jonathan was represented by John Momoh of Channels TV; Emeka Izeze of The Guardian, and Nduka Obaigbena of ThisDay,Arise TV and the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria.

He said while the Presidency agreed to any Sunday, Buhari allegedly rejected a Sunday because “he does not work on Sundays”.

Abati further said the APC candidate also rejected a Monday offer. He added that both parties later agreed to a Tuesday.

“Two days to this debate that would have been, I received non-stop frantic calls from the troika of Momoh, Izeze and Obaigbena. There had been a development, they said. The fresh development was that they had met that same evening with General Buhari and he did not agree anymore to a debate with President Jonathan.

“Rather, he wanted a town hall meeting, in which he would be the sole participant.

Another town hall meeting could be organised the same day for President Jonathan and both could be aired back to back. That was his request and wish.

Momoh and co wanted the President to agree to this”, he said.

Abati said the Nigeria Elections Debate Group was the second group to invite the two leading candidates to a debate.

The presidential spokesperson added, “The Buhari camp, again, rejected this invitation on the grounds that the media houses involved were pro-government and therefore partisan”.

In its reaction, the APC Presidential Campaign Organization faulted the Presidency for being hypocritical as it recalled that during previous elections, the PDP had always rejected debate offers by Buhari to the candidates of the ruling party.

He addressed the APC members and supporters at the Teslim Balogun Staduim, Surelere, Lagos, where they ended the walk.

“We will commit the remaining days before the elections to fasting and prayers and ensure that APC gets 100 per cent votes”, Ambode said.

The Argentine forward poked in a rebound of Suarez’s shot 9 minutes later and then rounded off his 32nd hat-trick with another fine display of his quick feet in the visitors goal area.

Read About The Community Where Umbrellas Are Forbidden

Iwoye-ketu is a border community in Ogun State. As a custom, it is a taboo for residents to use umbrella or rear pigs. GBENRO ADEOYE, who visited the community, reports on the agelong tradition

It’s the start of another rainy season, a time when people sometimes walk in hurried steps with umbrellas in hand to ward off the rain.

But in Iwoye-ketu, a border community in Imeko/Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, residents would rather get wet than do that. The use of umbrella is a taboo in the community.

The custom dates back hundreds of years, estimated to go as far back as 1705 when its first settlers discovered the land. Since then, the legend has been passed down from generation to generation. Although, its essence has been lost on some of the community’s younger generation, they dare not break the tradition up till the present day.

Split between Nigeria and Benin Republic, Iwoye-ketu is about 98km away from Abeokuta, Ogun State capital and bordered by Iwajowa Local Government Area in Oyo State to the north and the Francophone country to the west.

One of the closest towns to the community is Imeko Afon, about 17km away. A bumpy motorcycle ride, which is the popular means of transportation on the dusty Imeko-Iwoye Road, takes about 30 minutes to get to Iwoye-ketu.

With an official figure from the 2006 census putting the population of Iwoye-ketu at 25,000, the present population of the community is estimated to have grown to between 50,000 and 75,000.

‘No use of umbrella here’

Legend has it that one of the first settlers of the community, Olumu, who was said to have been a powerful man from Ile-Ife in Osun State brought three items along with him to Iwoye-ketu: a crown; a staff called Opa Ogbo; and his deity called Orisa Oluwa.

The shorter version of the legend is that it is Orisa Oluwa that forbids the use of umbrella in Iwoye-ketu and Wasinmi, a relatively smaller community under its control up till the present day.

In addition, the deity is also said to forbid the rearing of pigs in the communities.

Our correspondent did not sight a pig or anyone using an umbrella during his visit to the community.

But interestingly, there are no known consequences for people who defy the custom. However, that has not affected the strong level of compliance with the rules by the residents.

“It’s the Orisa that doesn’t want umbrella to be used here. It also detests pigs because they are dirty. We have abided by the rules because we (residents) know the custom. Children are told about the custom and when strangers come in, we also let them know they cannot use umbrella or rear pigs here,” said the Ooye of Iwoye-ketu (community’s king), Joel Aremu.

He described the use of umbrella within the community as an affront to the deity as he told the story of how the community’s legendary early settler divided the Ogun River with his staff, similar to the Bible’s account of how Moses parted the Red Sea to rescue thousands of Jews from slavery and oppression in Egypt, famously known today as The Exodus.

“Our residents can use umbrella outside the community; it’s in the community that it’s forbidden. We inherited the tradition from our forefathers and we have guided it since then because we respect our culture. Thankfully, no one defies the rule,” the Ooye of Iwoye-ketu said.

“When strangers come into the community and use their umbrellas, we don’t harass them, we only tell them it’s against our tradition and they always abide by it. Nothing bad will happen if someone uses the umbrella but it’s our tradition and we want to keep it that way.”

Saturday PUNCH observed that many residents of the community, including Aremu, own umbrellas which they use outside the community.

“I have an umbrella in my car and I use it outside the community,” Aremu confirmed to our correspondent.

However, there is a longer version of the story as told by elders of the community.

One of them, Mr. Jonathan Idowu, 75, said the story began with the earliest hunters of the community. Idowu’s late father was one of the community’s most celebrated hunters.

He said, “In those days, our forefathers used to hunt elephants in the forests. Since elephants have big ears that are wide like an umbrella, they felt threatened by the sight of umbrellas anytime they saw hunters with them.

“Most times, the elephants would chase after them. In spite of their size, elephants are fast animals. When an elephant is running, you will only see the dust rising after it because it’s so fast.

“As a result, there were many vicious attacks by elephants on the hunters. And since it was the tradition of hunters to consult with Orisa Oluwa before setting out, later, the deity warned them against the use of umbrellas.

“We (residents) obeyed whatever Orisa Oluwa told us to do. If it told the hunters not to go out and that they would be killed in the forest if they did, they would stay at home. Orisa Oluwa was also consulted in the wartime. So when it forbade the use of umbrellas, we obeyed and have obeyed since then.”

Idowu also told of how attires like gowns worn by masquerades equally elicited violent reactions from elephants back in the day.

“An elephant, with its size, appears like an object wearing a cloak so it could also be threatened by anyone who appeared like a masquerade,” he said.

Meanwhile in the absence of umbrellas, residents are accustomed to the use of polythene, clothes, hoods, rain coats, boots and traditional woven hats (akete), depending on their suitability to the sun or rain.

For instance, a 40-year-old trader in the community, Mrs. Modinat Adepoju, said she has grown to rely on other things in place of an umbrella.

Adepoju, whose last child is still a toddler, said anytime it rained or the sun became too hot while she was out with her baby on her back, she would spread a piece of cloth or polythene over her as protection against the harsh weather element.

“The taboo is not strange to us since we grew up with it. Sometimes I wear akete and give to my child that is older to wear too. And when I go outside the community, I use umbrella. I have one at home,” she told our correspondent.

A community split between two countries

Iwoye-ketu is a multi-cultural community with its over eight ethnic groups which include Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Egun, Ohoi and Igede.

A concrete pillar within the community separates the section under the Nigerian territory from the part that falls under Benin Republic, although residents see themselves as one since both fall under the authority of the same monarch- Ooye of Iwoye-ketu.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the boundary dividing the community along international lines had been demarcated since the colonial era but with little regard for its sanctity in the early post colonial period. Following the indiscriminate construction that sprang up all around the border line, a former Minister of Works and Housing, the late Gen. Abdulkareem Adisa (retd.) under the military regime of General Sani Abacha, redefined the border and demolished some illegal structures in the community.

But at the Benin Republic end of the community, also called ‘French’ by residents, the taboo is also strongly respected.

A gendarme at a police post belonging to Benin Republic, Tonasse Germain, who spoke to our correspondent through a translator, confirmed that the French speaking section of the community also complies with the age long tradition.

He said residents have learnt to read weather signs and work with them.

“We don’t have any problem with the tradition since Iwoye is one and we’re under one king. We watch the weather, when it looks like it would rain, I will stay indoors if I don’t want to get wet. And if it’s important, I can hold a polythene over my head. Some people wear raincoats and the like,” he said.

Iwoye-ketu is also one of four locations in Ogun State where agricultural students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta go annually for their Farm Practical Year, the equivalent of industrial training undertaken by students offering non-agriculture related courses.

New students are posted to the school’s Iwoye-ketu farm every session, where they are required to stay for a minimum of seven months. Our correspondent learnt that 350 students from the school were currently undergoing the training in the school farm located in Iwoye-ketu.

Some of them could not understand the reason behind the taboo and why they should be affected. They described the taboo as strange and wondered how the residents of the community had managed to cope with it for a long time.

“I feel sorry for them still. The people of the community are still tied to an old tradition that has nothing to do with this age. I think they are only punishing themselves but who are we to complain since we’re only here for a while?” One of them who did not want his name published told our correspondent.

There are also pockets of youths in the community who suffer in silence but have been afraid to speak against the tradition for fear of castigation by the elders.

Some of them argued that Orisa Oluwa has lost its relevance in a modern age that has opened their eyes to other religions like Christianity and Islam.

“Nobody goes there to worship again like before,” a teenager who identified himself as Dayo said.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH indeed showed that only some elders of the community still visit the shrine of Orisa Oluwa to perform the required annual rites done in August or November of every year.

The rites involve pouring water fetched with only gourds and calabashes on the deity. No plastic buckets or alcoholic drinks are allowed near it and only some specific persons are allowed to move closer than 10 metres to the shrine.

Therefore, most residents of the community don’t know what the deity looks like. In the absence of Mr. Ogundele, who tends to the shrine, our correspondent learnt from someone in his household that the deity lives in a calabash.

Our correspondent’s visit to the shrine showed a pavement amidst a bushy area.

The residents described it as the start of an ongoing renovation exercise at the shrine.

Reacting to the critics of the deity, Idowu criticised them for questioning its potency, describing Orisa Oluwa as deserving of reverence by the young and the old. He recalled that in his younger days, no one dared cast aspersions on Orisa Oluwa’s potency.

“When we were young, if it did not rain in the community for long, the community would fetch water and pour on Orisa Oluwa. A heavy rain would fall within an hour of performing the rite,” he recalled.

“Some of us who did not leave the shrine immediately would be drenched in the rain on our way home. That was the power of Orisa Oluwa.”

Party politics

Incidentally, umbrella is the logo of the Peoples Democratic Party, the ruling party in Nigeria. And trust politicians from the opposition parties, they would not miss an opportunity to use the taboo to their benefit during political campaigns.

Apart from the fact that PDP members cannot put up umbrellas during campaigns in the community, members of the other parties also make it a point of duty to remind residents that the deity of the land forbade the use of umbrellas.

“We tell people not to accept the party with the umbrella logo because our deity forbids the use of umbrellas. Of course, they are political statements and some residents know that but we might be able to win a few sentimental people to our side through that,” the youth leader of the All Progressives Congress in Iwoye-Jabata ward, Mr. Idowu Odekunle, told our correspondent.

Mr. Peter Bamgbowu, PDP Secretary, Iwoye-Jabata ward, who confirmed the situation said as a result, his party members sometimes have to explain to residents that his party was not after destroying the tradition of the community.

“During campaigns, some people will say ‘go away, we don’t use umbrella here.’ We explain to them that it’s only a logo and that it doesn’t mean we want to use umbrellas in the community,” he said.

Taboo on pig rearing

Known as a nomadic tribe, a large Fulani population in Iwoye-ketu makes the community a destination for lovers of beef. Even though, pork is eaten by some of the residents of the community, it is a taboo to rear them.

Legend has it that a bad omen awaits any pig that strays near Orisa Oluwa shrine.

“Because Orisa Oluwa does not like pigs, any pig that goes too close to its shrine will die mysteriously. So it became a taboo for anyone to rear pigs in the community,” Idowu said.

However, findings showed that some residents living on the outskirts of the community rear pigs

APC Paid N5,000 Per Person For ‘One-Million-Man’ March – Lagos PDP Says.

The Peoples Democratic Party, Lagos State chapter, says every person that attended the one-million-man march of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos on Saturday was paid at least N5,000 each.

The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, said groups that attended the march received between N1m and N10m.

The opposition party in the state said the APC was deceiving Lagosians by tagging the march as “one-million-march” even though the Teslim Balogun Stadium where the walk ended, could only accommodate 24,000 people.

According to Gani, during the rally, posters and billboards of its candidates were vandalised while two people in private vehicles were attacked for carrying the sticker of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.

The statement read, “The PDP has described as blatant falsehood and over exaggeration of the number of attendees which the APC continues to put at one Million probably to give General Muhammadu Buhari false hope in Lagos State.

“The capacity of the stadium used is 24,325 and could not have accommodated over 100,000 without stampede! The Party notes that the APC was over ambitious to expect one million lovers of the APC in Lagos State at this period that the masses are disenchanted with its policies; a reason why Governor Babatunde Fashola could not attend the rally.

“The PDP posits that the realistic figure of about 11,000 APC members actually participated due to coercion or monetary inducement.

“The PDP further wants the security agencies to investigate the anomalies observed at the rally which include: Assault of persons; destruction of PDP campaign materials; use of abusive, threat, provocative speeches and songs.

“We condemn the actions of some overzealous members of the APC who participated in the Buhari/Osibajo rally but actually deployed to unleash on the banners and other campaign materials of PDP on the rally routes.

“Lagosians in two private cars and a commercial bus were harassed and the vehicles maliciously damaged because they had the stickers of the PDP and Agbaje. We blame the APC for not curtailing the excesses of such members in order to prevent such assaults.

“The number of persons at the rally can at best be near 11,000. This is in spite our intelligence report that individual participants were mobilised with N5,000 while the groups got between N1m and N10M each”.
