Opinion: Meet The Five Architects Of Jonathan’s Defeat

Nigerians made history. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, an incumbent president has been defeated. While incumbent governors have been defeated in the past, it was a feat many thought might not be possible at the centre for a long time to come. But Nigerians, by their votes, have shown the exit door to a government they deemed has not served them right.

But the trouncing of Goodluck Jonathan at the polls was not a happenstance. Perhaps, if there were those who did not see this coming, it was probably the president himself and some of his loyalists. Beyond this, however, there are some five key individuals who contributed to the electoral downfall of the president. Their actions and what they represented ensured that in less than two months from now, Jonathan will become a former president.

BUHARI: THE ULTIMATE CROWD PULLER

Nigerians made history. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, an incumbent president has been defeated. While incumbent governors have been defeated in the past, it was a feat many thought might not be possible at the centre for a long time to come. Beyond this, however, there are some five key individuals who contributed to the electoral downfall of the president. Their actions and what they represented ensured that in less than two months from now, Jonathan will become a former president. Buhari BUHARI: THE ULTIMATE CROWD PULLER He is a man after the heart of the talakawas, the masses, in the northern part of Nigeria. These are young men and women who fanatically follow him – and have been doing so since 2003 when he first threw his hat in the ring. Buhari has always had a cult-like followership in up north but it was difficult to replicate in other parts of the country. However, the support base of the retired general moved beyond the north to the strategic south-western part of the country which has a strong media and publicity base, in addition to a large population of voters. From a man who consistently won 12 million votes in the north without any major finance or structure, he was successful sold to southern voters and this marked a major turning point for Jonathan, who would ordinarily expect that as a southerner, he would be the preferred candidate in the region. ‘Sai Buhari’ (only Buhari) that was only restricted to the north alone suddenly became the catchphrase in the mouths of both young and old down south. Even when questions were raised over his academic certificate and health, his followers, especially those who are very active in the social media, insisted they would vote for him nonetheless. Jonathan’s exit was inevitable.

TINUBU: THE UNDYING POLITICAL CRAFT MASTER

Hate him or love him, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one politician you ignore and you later bite your fingers. Simple as that. Since he survived the PDP tsunami of 2003 when he returned as governor of Lagos State in an election that saw five of his former colleagues in the then AD sent packing, he has gone about the business of checkmating the ruling PDP with so much passion and determination. Blessed with an uncanny ability to identify political as well as electoral assets, Tinubu was said to have said immediately after the 2011 elections reasoned that if Buhari could poll 12 million votes without much resources and national appeal, then he was the man to be pushed forward for 2015. But before then, there was the need to build a strong, broad based political party that would be strong enough to serve as counterfoil to the PDP juggernaut. He and Buhari started consultations. The product was the All Progressives Congress (APC). He got disgruntled elements within the PDP to jump ship and for the first time since 1999, the opposition was able to speak with one voice.

.

AMAECHI: THE BULL IN CHINA SHOP

When Rotimi Amaechi, governor of Rivers state, wanted to return as the chairman of the very powerful Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) in 2013, his party, the PDP, did not want him because by that time, he had become a thorn in the flesh of President Jonathan. Amaechi and the president’s wife had fallen out over the demolition of waterfront houses under an urban renewal programme. It became a media war. The war shifted to the NGF. But Amaechi, backed by governors from opposition party and PDP rebel governors, would have none of that. Even when the governors had two parallel elections, public sentiment was on the side of the Amaechi faction. And he went about the business of Jonathan’s political demolition with alacrity. He used the NGF to fight the president and formed an alliance with opposition governors to make life miserable for Jonathan. It was a terrible embarrassment for the president, coming from a fellow Niger Deltan, and Amaechi’s persistence did more political damage obviously more than what the president budgeted for.

CNN Interviews President-Elect Muhammadu Buhari (Photos)

The interview was conducted by Christianne Amanpour. It ended at 7:30 pm of 1st April.

In the interview, Buhari refutes general allegations of not being a democrat stressing the fact that he'd followed due process in the past elections that he lost.

On how he planned to tackle economic challenges in the face of dwindling oil prices, the general stressed that the money saved from corruption and other avenues are enough to handle the country's economic challenges.

6 Ways Many Men Are Unknowingly Killing Their Sperm

More and more men are finding it hard to produce these days.

It is not that they are not sweating enough, or that they are "unhealthy", but something is wrong.

Though other factors contribute, damaged sperm is a major reason for many a couple's infertility issues.

In many cases, the man's weapon may be the reason for losing the childbearing war...

Researchers have shown that a man’s lifestyle can affect the quality and quantity of his sperm, hence fertility issues.

Anyway, here are some ways men unwittingly cause the damage:

Always carrying a phone in the front pocket. Studies have shown that there is the radiation a mobile phone emits so close to the scrotal area causes as much a 9% drop in live sperm per Fluid sample. So it better to hold the phone or carry it in a case or, at worse, the back pocket.

Leaving stress unattended to. A man who is always stressed, maybe due to overworking, is inadvertently killing his swimmers. Every body function, including sperm production, is affected by stress. Researchers found out that men with anxiety issues tend to have abnormally shaped sperm and sperm with mobility issues. Now, an immobile sperm is useless because they have to swim far to marry an egg fr conception.

Drinking too much. Alcohol is a big enemy of sperm. In fact, the British Medical Journal suggests that having as little as five drinks (alcohol) weekly can 'adversely affect' to Fluid quality.

Smoking too much. Blowing the smoke always has a negative impact on sperm quality. However, a researcher says, once a man quits, his system immediately starts generating healthier sperm.

Piling up extra weight. Being fit has a lot of advantages. Being fat lowers sperm production and can cause erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence? Losing just a little amount of weight can help.

Staying too much in hot areas. Being exposed to too much heat regularly has dire consequences for a man's sperm. A welder for example might be at risk. A man's genital region needs to be cooler than the other parts of the body, not hotter.

If you have hopes of getting a child in the future, now might be a time to be conscious of your lifestyle, instead of worrying later.

Alcohol, fat, smoking, stress and all the other factors must be monitored.

My Landlord Has Taken Over My Wife - Husband Cries Out

A 51- year-old civil servant, Marcel Oreweme has accused his wife, Faith, of infidelity and urged an Iyana-Ipaja Customary Court in Lagos, to dissolve their marriage.

The petitioner said his marriage troubles started in 2011 when he suspected his wife of having extra marital affair with their landlord.

“I had no evidence she was seeing the landlord; I just noticed her ways weren’t pure. Also, there was a day my wife left the house around 5.30am on the pretext of getting to work early. I was so curious that I trailed her,” he said.

Oreweme said he sneaked inside the bus his wife boarded with another man but they never noticed.

“My wife sat in the front while the man drove and I wondered what their plan was. When they got to their destination, I came down from the bus and sadly I received the shocker of my life.

“My wife and her lover went into a restaurant and immediately I entered, I heard her introduce herself to his friends as his wife. I was dumbfounded. I kept wondering where, when and how we got divorced. I don’t know if she doesn’t want me anymore,” he said.

The father of three told the court that his wife was fond of returning home late without a feeling for their children.

“I cook for our children before she returns from work. She is never available to cater for us. Even when she is eventually around, there is always disagreement. I can’t ever forget how she hit my head with a rod during our last argument,’ he added.

Mrs Oreweme denied the allegations, saying: “During our last argument, my husband beat me mercilessly till I became unconscious. It was his friends that rushed me to the hospital.”

She also said her husband abandoned her in the hospital until her uncle defrayed her medical bills and took her home.

“I never used a rod on him he was the one who did. What I meant by introducing myself as the man’s wife was because he is from the same hometown as my husband,” she said.

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon Reacts To Nigeria’s Presidential Election

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, says the way the presidential election in Nigeria was conducted is “a testament” to Nigeria’s “democratic spirit”.

Mr. Ban Ki-Moon also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for “his statesmanship in upholding the democratic process”.

He applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising the elections in a professional and credible “manner under challenging circumstances”.

The UN Chief then called on all Nigerians to accept the outcome of the elections.

He expressed hope that the same democratic spirit would prevail in the conduct of the governorship and state houses of assembly elections on April 11.

General Muhammadu Buhari was declared the winner of the Presidential election in the early hours of Wednesday and has received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He defeated Nigeria’s incumbent President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, by over 2 million votes, in a keenly contested election which held on Saturday, March 28, 2015.

This is the first time an opposition party is winning the presidential election in Nigeria.

Before handing over the certificate to General Buhari, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, pledged that the commission would continue to do its best, under all circumstances, to ensure free, fair and credible elections.

Nigeria’s president-elect Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday sought to reconcile past differences with incumbent Goodluck Jonathan, extending a hand of friendship to his beaten election opponent.

He added: “Democracy and the rule of law will be established in the land. Let’s put the past behind us, especially the recent past. We must forget our old battles and past grievances and forge ahead.”

Photo Of Obasanjo's Letter To Buhari: "Much Harm Has Been Done To The Military"

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has written to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, advising him that “with so much harm already done to many national institutions including the military, which proudly nurtured y0u and me, you will have a lot to do on institution reform”.

The letter, dated March 31, 2015, was circulated on Wednesday by the APC presidential campaign organisation.

THE FULL TEXT

I hasten to congratulate you on your success and victory in the Presidential Elections of March 28, 2015.

Your success and victory after three previous unsuccessful attempts must be great object lessons for you and for all politicians, particularly in Nigeria.

For me, the totality of 2015 elections hold many lessons for our democracy and democratisation process, which are both maturing. On this occasion, the system has been unnecessarily overheated before and particularly during the campaigns when emphasis was more on trivialities and hate, divisive, undignifying and disrespectful statements and comments rather than on pressing issues requiring attention. I know that in victory, you will be magnanimous to start binding the wounds and bitterness occasioned by the campaign and the evil disciples.

With so much harm already done to many national institutions including the military, which proudly nurtured you and me, you will have a lot to do on institution reform, education, healthcare, economy, security, infrastructure, power, youth employment, agribusiness, oil and gas, external affairs, cohesiveness of our nation and ridding our land of corruption. Your varied and wide experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead.

I am also sure that there are men and women of goodwill, character and virtue across the board that you can mobilise to join hands with you in the reform, repairs and redirection that will be imperative to put Nigeria back on the fast lane of good governance, unity, cohesiveness, development and progress.

Once again, I felicitate with you and wish you well.

Supporters Throng Ambode's Office To Celebrate APC Victory

Change is in the air. It is a new dawn and all over the country, people are getting caught up in the excitement and expectation. This was evident today as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos thronged the campaign secretariat of the party's governorship candidate in Gbagada, Lagos to celebrate the party's victory in the presidential elections. The large crowd of supporters danced and sang songs of victory and repeatedly chanted "Sai Nigeria", "Sai Baba", and "Ambo", the slogan of Akinwunmi Ambode.

The highpoint was the arrival of the man himself, Akinwunmi Ambode. The crowd erupted in chants of "Ambo" and clung to his car. Akinwunmi Ambode obliged the supportes and came out of his car to salute them. This further excited the already frenzied crowd who chanted "Ambo" "Ambo".

The supporters expressed confidence that the APC's victory will bring positive change to Nigeria. They added that victory for Akinwunmi Ambode come April 11, will bring further development and progress to Lagos, especially now that there will be an APC government at the centre.

Ambode enjoined the supporters to remain united in their common quest for a new Nigeria. He said, "This is not the time to express hate in any form. Nigerians have shown impressive readiness to make our country work again. We must remain united in this one purpose to make our nation great."

Some Reasons Why Nigerians Abroad Are Not Coming Home

just collected my resident permit card today and will be visiting nigeria august after 2yrs leaving my nation and a topic came my mind and will like to share with my fellow NL who have ppl overseas.

though i may not include some of the reasons but I am 100% sure of my own but you can include yours if you have.

jobless without a stable job:- yes, how can someone who is not eating 3 square meals remember ppl at home? this month he/she works and next month no job again and house rent ,water ,light etc are there to balance up.

Fraudster:- forget this kind of ppl and loose hope in them because they will never come home due to their crimes been committed within the country and he can't even near the airport if he is a wanted criminal. Abroad no be 9ja o ones they have your biometrics ,even if you bleach from black to green dey will get u.

Prodigal lifestyle ppl:- before you make up your mind living in abroad ,u must open your number 6 (brain) because life is too sweet abroad and this group of ppl spend there savings clubbing, partying, smoking, drinking and prostituting just frgt this kind of ppl dey can never remember home even if you tell them there parents are abt to die.

Illegal migrants:- 78% of Nigerians living abroad are living illegal ,majority came with 3weeks, 2month, 1month visas but will not have the chance to renew there visas until they finally meet up with the country requirements and mind you if you don't make the steps early enough, just forget visiting police station if you dont want to be deported. so this are the kind of ppl that spend more than 10years without visiting home.

The marriage scammers:- these group of ppl will never visit home because they have forcefully marry a citizen of the country dey reside just to get residence permit. oyinbo wife no be like nja o if you mention say u wan go your country ehh be ready to spend some weeks in jail cheesy

that's all I can write for now due to my experience and what I am seeing with my two eyes.

may God crown our hustle (Amen)

Photo: Nigerian swinger dies in swimming pool at sex party in UK mansion

Nigerian swinger, 35 year old Edmund Echukwu (pictured left) died after drowning in a swimming pool at a swingers' party in an upmarket village in the UK last week. The father of three, was pulled from the pool of a £3million mansion in Radlett, Hertfordshire where a James Bond-themed sex party was happening last Friday night, March 27th. Other guests at the party tried to revive him but were unable to. He was pronounced dead at Watford General Hospital hours later.

The organizers of the party, Richard Stanley, 66, and his partner Janet Harrison, 58, said guests brought their own alcohol to the party and Mr Echukwu had been seen drinking from a bottle of Jack Daniel's'. He was with a woman when he suddenly lost balance in the pool and drowned.

It was the first time, according to his friends, that Edmund, who worked as a care worker, would attend a sex-party.

Governor Akpabio And Etiebet Trade Blames Over Jonathan’s Election Loss

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, and a former Minister of Petroleum, Don Etiebet, have traded blames over the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s loss at the presidential polls Saturday.

Mr. Etiebet had while reacting to Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence as president-elect blamed Mr. Akpabio for President Goodluck Jonathan’s defeat.

But Mr. Akpabio described the former minister’s allegation as “strange, baseless and mischievous” saying Mr. Etiebet should tell the world what he did to ensure the PDP won the presidential election.

The governor, who reacted through his Chief Press Secretary, Anietie Ukpe, accused Mr. Etiebet of being a fifth columnist in the ranks of the PDP.

The former minister, who is also a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, said he has been vindicated about the concerned he expressed against Mr. Akpabio’s overwhelming influence on Mr. Jonathan.

When he discovered a crack in the party structure, Mr. Etiebet said he tried to get access to Mr. Jonathan but Mr. Akpabio would not allow him or other well-meaning persons from the state to see the president.

Mr. Etiebet, therefore, attributed the failure of Mr. Jonathan to retain the presidency to a rebellion against the PDP, adding that half of the votes that gave Mr. Buhari victory came from states controlled by the party.

He, however, described Mr. Jonathan’s timely actions in congratulating Mr. Buhari and conceding defeat as “a new beginning for the country’s politics”.

Mr. Etiebet also described the outcome of the elections in which the incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate as “historic.”

“I will also like to say that it was not APC winning. It was not PDP losing. Do you know that from the analysis, the total number of votes lost by PDP controlled-states was more than half of the total number of APC winning votes?” Mr. Etiebet asked.

“You can analyse what happened by yourself. You will discover that somebody was misled somewhere, somehow; attention was not paid by the PDP hierarchy and the people had to rebel.

“This is a rebellion against the party, including myself. I did everything to let them know that they were on a wrong course, but my governor (Mr. Akpabio) tried to bring local politics to national level; that he will not allow anybody else access to the president and to the leadership of the party.

“And by God’s grace, I have been vindicated today. It is the PDP that lost the election.”

The former minister predicted that the April 11 gubernatorial election across the country would witness similar act of rebellion.

Also speaking, the state’s APC governorship candidate, Umana Umana, said he was happy his party won the presidential election.

“I am happy that my party, APC, is behind the wind of change blowing across Nigeria. With Buhari, the era of impunity has finally come to an end,” Mr. Umana said.

“The moment is historic for Nigeria. Buhari has character; he has what is required to turn Nigeria round, politically and economically.”

In a reaction, Mr. Akpabio said instead of apportioning blames, the most dignified thing Mr. Etiebet should have done would be to tell the disappointed members of the PDP what he (Etiebet) did to ensure the party’s victory in the presidential polls.

Mr. Akpabio said, “This is the case of the man who set his seat on fire in the theatre and ran out shouting fire! fire! fire!!!

“It is noteworthy that he has described the victory of APC as ‘exciting’ which indicates that he was a fifth columnist in the ranks of the PDP.

“His claim that Governor Akpabio stopped him from seeing President Jonathan is equally strange, given the fact that the President had always kept an open door to all members of the Board of Trustees of the PDP.”

Mr. Akpabio said his commitment to the PDP has never been doubt, adding that if there were as many people with the same level of commitment, the story would have been different.

Likely Composition Of General Buhari's Cabinet

For all practical purposes, even though the results are still being collated, I am deeply convinced that General Buhari will win this election by a very comfortable margin.

It is also my believe that President Jonathan will graciously concede defeat in a very mature and rancour free manner. He will not contest the results in court even though his acolytes and party men will stridently want him to. I believe, GEJ does not want to leave office looking like a sore loser.

Having said all these, it is safe to say that the 2015 Presidential Elections has been won and lost.

The elections are over!!!

What then will be the likely composition of General Buhari's cabinet? From keen observations of Buhari's campaign organisation, Buhari's utterances during the campaigns, and the actions and activities of various key actors in Gen Buhari's camp, I believe the following will either be in his cabinet or play key roles in his government.

It is obvious from Buhari's utterances during the campaigns that he will run a government whose policy direction and key economic decisions will be dictated by " a team". He kept harping on this.

The possible names are:

• Dr Kayode Fayemi (former governor of Ekiti State)

• Senator Olorunimbe Mamora (he vacated his senate seat for Remi Tinubu, Sen Tinubu's wife)

• Gov Raji Babatunde Fashola

• Abike Dabiri (former member House of Representatives)

• Baba Ahmed (former Ambassador, and former INEC Secretary)

• Gov Rotimi Amaechi

• Gov Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso (he is contesting a senatorial seat, but could likely accept a cabinet post)

• Prince Tonye Princewill (LP governorship candidate in Rivers State)

• Ben Akubueze (former MD NAL Merchant Bank, and Hon Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State)

• Dr Adesina Akinwumi (Minister of Agriculture in Jonathan’s cabinet)

• Dr Chris Ngige (senator, and former governor of Anambra State)

• Oby Ezekwesili

Nigerian Prostitutes Congratulate Buhari, Declare Nationwide Free Sex

The National Association of Nigeria Prostitutes, NANP, has congratulated the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the just concluded presidential election.

The group while describing Buhari’s emergence as the president-elect as victory for all Nigerians, equally saluted the outgoing leader, President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting defeat without pushing further.

Restating its earlier promise, the group said it is declaring three days of free sex nationwide to celebrate Buhari’s victory.

The group had in a statement issued in January promised declare a-three day free sex across the country if president Jonathan eventually loses the seat to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of APC.

NANP in a text message forwarded to DAILY POST Wednesday morning urged its members nationwide to comply with the directive.

The terse statement sent by its National Secretary, Jessica Elvis called on Buhari to legalise commercial sex work as well as improve their welfare.

“Hi Ameh, please kindly extend NANP’s felicitation to Gen. Buhari for winning the presidential election. On behalf of every member of NANP, we heartily congratulate the People’s General for winning the poll. As part of our earlier promise, we will be declaring a three-day free sex nationwide. We want all our members to honour this directive. We want to use this privilege to beg the President-elect to look into the welfare of this association. We believe his victory will surely better this harmless struggle,” the SMS read.

Photos: Buhari's Motocade On His Way To Receive INEC's Certificate Of Return

There is a saying that success has many friends but failure is an orphan..I was driving around Aso Drive in Abuja when i noticed a considerable number of police escorts and private cars on the road. It was obvious that there was something going on..I learnt from a resident that it was because of buhari, as he was being accommodated by a top dignitary at Aso drive. He definitely had lot of guests who have to associate with him based on his recent success

The road was blocked and i was asked to wait because Buhari was on the way out. I waited and eventually saw his vehicle come out of the premises. Although there were many escort vehicles but i was caught in between his motorcade such that there was only one car between my car and the vehicle he was been driven in..It was when i got to the office 40 mins later i saw him on TV receiving his return certificate from INEC..I managed to take few pictures from the passengers side of the car and share with you guys!!.

Acceptance Statement by Gen. Buhari, President-Elect of Nigeria

Gen. Buhari's acceptance speech below...

I am immensely grateful to God for this day and for this hour. I feel truly honoured and humbled that the Nigerian people have so clearly chosen me to lead them. The official announcement from INEC was the moment the vast majority of Nigerians had hoped and been waiting for. Today, history has been made, and change has finally come. Your votes have changed our national destiny for the good of all Nigerians.

INEC has announced that I, Muhammadu Buhari, shall be your next president. My team and I shall faithfully serve you. There shall no longer be a ruling party again: APC will be your governing party. We shall faithfully serve you. We shall never rule over the people as if they were subservient to government.

Our long night has passed and the daylightof new democratic governance has broken across the land. This therefore is not a victory for one man or even one party. It is a victory for Nigeria and for all Nigerians. Millionsof you have worked for this day. So many have risked life and livelihood; and others have died that we may witness this moment.

And it is with a very heavy heart that I report many deaths and injuries amidst the jubilations yesterday. We send our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives; and wish speedy recovery to those who suffered injuries. I appeal to all our supporters to celebratethis victory with prayers and reflection instead of wild jubilation.

May the souls of those who died rest inpeace. Let us take amoment of silence to honour all of those whose sacrificeshave brought us to this fine and historic hour. As the results of the electionhave shown, their labor has not been and will neverbe in vain. Democracy and the rule of law will be re-established in the land.

Let us put the past, especially the recent past, behindus. We must forget our old battles and past grievances—and learn to forge ahead. I assureyou that our government is one that will listen to and embrace all.

Ipledge myself and our in-comingadministration to just and principled governance. There shall be no bias against or favouritism for any Nigerian based on ethnicity, religion, region, gender or social status. I pledge myself and the government to the rule of law, in which none shall be so above the law that they are not subject to its dictates, and none shall be so below it that they are not availed of its protection.

You shall be able to go to bed knowing that you are safe and that your constitutional rightsremain in safe hands. You shallbe able to voice your opinion without fear of reprisal or victimisation. My love and concernfor this nation and what I desire for it extends to all, even to those who do not like us or our politics. You are all my people and I shall treat everyone of you as my own. I shall work for those who voted for me as well as those who voted against me and even for those whodid not vote at all. We all live under one name as one nation:we are all Nigerians.

Some unfortunate issues about my eligibility have been raisedduring the campaign.I wish to state that through devotionto this nation, everything I have learned and done has been to enable me to make the best possiblecontribution to public life. If I had judged myself incapable of governing I would never have sought to impose myself on it. I have served in various capacities and have always put in my best.

But despite the rancour of the elections, I extend a hand of friendship andconciliation to President Jonathan and his team. I hereby wish to state that I harbour no ill will against anyone.

Let me state clearlythat President Jonathan has nothing to fear from me. Althoughwe may not agree on the methodsof governing the nation, he is a great Nigerianand still our president. He deserves our supportand permanent respectby virtue of the office he has held. This is how an honourable nation treats its servants and conducts its affairs; and this is how Nigeria shouldbe.

Ilook forward to meeting with PresidentJonathan in the days to come to discusshow our teams can make the transition of administrations as efficientas possible.

Here, I want to thank my party for selecting me as its candidate. I thank our party leaders and members for the steadfast contributions they made to bring our dream to fruition. I thank INEC, the police and all other government agencies for performing their tasks in a proper manner and for refusingto be induced to undermine the election and the democratic process.

Ialso wish to thank religious Leaders, traditional leaders, the media, labor unions, Civil Society organisations, organisedprivate sector, youths and students for their roles in this election.

Igive special thanksto President Obama and his timelyintervention and supportfor peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria and for sending Secretary John Kerry and other United States officials. The European Union - especiallythe United Kingdom, France, Germany and other nationsthat were activelyinvolved in ensuringthe success of this election are equally appreciated. My sincere thanks to the United Nations Secretary General Mr Ban-Ki Moon. The Commonwealth, China, India and other Asian and Gulf states are also hereby appreciated. Finallyour brothers in the AfricanUnion and ECOWAS have truly and clearly shown and demonstrate their commitment to our democratisation process. Former PresidentsJohn Kuffour, Amos Sawyer, BakiliMuluzi and his team are well appreciated. I must also add my appreciation for the role played by civil societies, national and International observers, other worldleaders in ensuringthat Nigeria holds free and fair elections.

Iassure all foreigngovernments that Nigeriawill become a more forceful and constructive player in the globalfight against terrorism and in other mattersof collective concern, such as the fight against drugs, climate change, financialfraud, communicable diseasesand other issues requiring global response. I want to assure our fellow African nations that Nigeria will now stand as a more constructive partner in advancing the matters of concern to our continent, particularly with regard to economic development and eradication of poverty.

Former head of state and presidentChief Olusegun Obasanjo,General Yakubu Gowon, Alh. Shehu Shagari, GeneralIbrahim Babangida, Chief Ernest Shonekanand General Abdulsalami Abubakar deserve commendations for their statesmanship and words of caution and counselfor peace during the tense moments of this electoral period.

Most of all, I thank the people of Nigeria for reposing their confidence in me at this tryingmoment. Our nationwrestles many challenges including insecurity, corruption, economicdecline. I pledge to give you my best in tackling these problems.

The good people of Nigeria, your obligation does not end with casting your ballot.I seek your voice and input as we tackle these problems. This will not be a government democratic only in form. It will be a government democratic in substance and in how it interacts with its own people.

No doubt, this nationhas suffered greatlyin the recent past, and its staying power has been testedto its limits by crises, chief among which is insurgency of the Boko Haram. There is no doubt that in tackling the insurgency we have a tough and urgent job to do. But I assure you that Boko Haram will soon know the strength of our collectivewill and commitment to rid this nation of terror, and bring back peace and normalcyto all the affected areas. We shall spare no effort until we defeat terrorism.

Furthermore, we shall stronglybattle another form of evil that is even worse than terrorism—the evil of corruption. Corruption attacks and seeks to destroy our national institutions and character. By misdirecting into selfish hands funds intendedfor the publicpurpose, corruption distorts the economyand worsens income inequality. It creates a class of unjustly-enriched people.

Such an illegal yet powerful forcesoon comes to undermine democracy because its conspirators have amassed so much money that they believethey can buy government. We shall end this threat to our economic developmentand democratic survival. I repeat that corruption will not be tolerated by this administration; and it shall no longer be allowed to stand as if it is a respected monumentin this nation.

Iask you to join me in resolving these and the other challenges we face. Along the way, there will be victoriesbut there may also be setbacks. Mistakes will be made. But we shall never take you for granted; so, be rest assured that our errorswill be those of compassion and commitment not of wilful neglectand indifference.

We shall correct that which does not work and improve that which does. We shall not stop, stand or idle. We shall, if necessary crawl, walk and run to do the job you have elected us to do.

Irealise that the expectation of our peopletoday is as high as their commitmentto change has been strongand their beliefin us unshaken. While we pledge to begin doingour best withoutdelay, we wouldlike to appeal to them to appreciate the gravity of our situation, so that we become more realisticin our expectations.

We will govern for you and in your interests. Your vote was not wasted. This is not the firsttime Nigerians have cast their votes for us, and this is not the first time they have been counted; but this is the first time that the votes have been allowed to count. With the help of God, we pledge to do our utmost to bring forth the Nigeriayou seek.

Thank you for your patience and attention.

General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR

President-Elect,

Next Senate President?

Since north is producing the president, SW the vice president, where will the next senate president go to. Dr Chris Ngige would have been the best choice but then Ekwunife PDP frustrated him out... what do you think my people as APC must produce the next senate president. Dr Saraki stands a better chance due to the role he played in scuttling PDPs opportunity of winning the election.

Femi Fani-kayode Releases Statement About The Presidential Election

Text of a press conference addressed by Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Director Media and Publicity Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Organisation on April 1, 2015. Read below...

Ladies and gentlemen of the media,

We have come here today to express our gratitude to the Nigerian people for the overwhelming support that we received over the last few weeks when it comes to the issue of the Presidential election.

We fought a virile, strong, aggressive and very effective campaign on behalf of our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan and we put the case to the Nigerian people as to why we believe that he ought to have been elected as President for a second term.

We are very proud of the efforts of our President and of our party and we are also very proud of the efforts of every single one of those who participated in the Presidential Campaign Organisation. As a Directorate we could not have asked for anything more in terms of support and encouragement from our colleagues and comrades within the party and the Campaign Organisation. I am personally very proud of my team, every single one of them; my Assistant Directors, my officers, my advisory team and every single one of those that joined hands to help us to state our case and to sell our candidate to the Nigerian people.

It has however come to a point that we must tell the world and the Nigerian people about how we feel about the outcome of the election. What we will say here today is basically to reiterate and to reflect the words of our leader and President, President Goodluck Jonathan. We start by saying that we commend and we congratulate General Muammadu Buhari for winning this election. We also wish to commend our President, President Goodluck Jonathan, for having the courage to concede that he has lost the election at the earliest moment and also for being able to stand up and rise above party politics and being able to speak like a statesman.

We therefore urge the Nigerian people and our teeming supporters to stand firm and continue to support the democratic process and continue to agitate for a better Nigeria. We urge them to continue to support our party the PDP as best as they can even though we lost this election. We ask them to co-operate with the incoming government and to remember that we are first and foremost Nigerians before anything else.

On the day of the election when I went to vote at Ile-Ife, I held a press conference in which I told the people that more than anything else that we should try our very best to keep the peace in this country and to keep the country moving forward. I also reminded them that in every election there will always be a winner and a loser. It is a mark of our humanity and it is also symptomatic of the type of people that we are and who we are that when the time comes we can say we fought a good fight but we lost.

And having lost, it does not mean that it is the end to the world, it just means that we need to re-group, re-organise ourselves and begin the process all over again because another elections will come in a few years time. And that is where we are today. We have conceded that we have lost. We acknowledge the fact that we fought a good fight. We do not have any fears about the future. We did the right thing during the campaign. We have no regrets about our candidate or the way in which we conducted our campaign and we will live to fight another day

Finally let me commend all our colleagues on the other side for also standing up for what they believed in. There was absolutely nothing personal as regards this Directorate or myself. I had nothing personal against anybody. I was simply doing my job for which I have no regrets and I wish them well and I sincerely hope that they will take Nigeria to a level that we can all be proud of.

May God grant each and everyone of us peace. May He watch over our nation. May He guide our President for the next two months whilst he is still in power and thereafter and may He guide and lead the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, in the herculean task that lies ahead for him. My prayer is that he brings our nation together, heals the wounds and that he builds the bridges in terms of religion, ethnicity and region that he needs to build in order for us to make Nigeria a better place and to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country that she is destined to be.

I want to end this message by thanking our colleagues in the press for always responding to us so quickly and for always being ready to hear our message and for putting it out there. Also those on the social media, both friend and foe, we thank you for your efforts. We thank our foes because they kept us on our toes and we thank our friends because they encouraged us and gave us hope.

May God grant you all peace and joy and may you live long and prosper.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Nigeria Leads The World In Enthusiasm For Business

Nigeria leads the world in enthusiasm for business, according to a survey carried out by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Indeed, the report noted that, all across Africa, a growing wave of grassroots self-starters are taking risks and defying obstacles to bring their money-making ideas to life.

Armed with a can-do attitude and hopes of striking it big, they’re navigating a conundrum of challenges to pursue opportunities at a time when many African countries enjoy unprecedented levels of economic growth.

GEM is the acclaimed largest study of entrepreneurial dynamics in the world, providing information to help policy makers, civil society and the business community understand the obstacles to nurturing entrepreneurship, enterprise promotion and growth. GEM annual surveys arer carried out in 99 countries.

The GEM survey noted that Nigeria leads the world in the proportion of the population who believe they have the skills to run a business, with almost 90 percent of Nigerian adults believing they have the ability to become entrepreneurs. The result of the survey shows that out of every 100 Nigerian adults, 35 are involved in some sort of entrepreneurial activities. It added that Nigerians are not deterred by fear that their new enterprise will fail; only 21 percent were concerned by this risk.

The survey confirms Nigeria as an entrepreneurial nation, where most adult Nigerians see opportunities in entrepreneurship, believe in their own entrepreneurial capacities and declare themselves ready to start and run a business. Indeed, 44 percent of the population intend to create their own businesses within the next five years. Of those surveyed for GEM, almost a quarter (22 percent) said they expected to create between 6 and 19 jobs over the next five years.

Growth and development

In 2012, the report stated, 21.7 percent of Nigerians aged between 18 and 64 years of age were preparing to start a new business, which is the second highest rate in sub-Saharan Africa, after Zambia, and 14.9 percent of adults were actually running a new business.

GEM noted that Nigeria had taken a number of steps to support small and medium-sized enterprises and the federal government has established support for the private sector as a policy priority. “A number of schemes to help small business are in operation such as the Bank of Industry (BoI) and the Bank of Agriculture (BoA).”

Access to finance

All new entrepreneurs report finding financing for their ventures is a barrier to creating and growing an enterprise, while lack of access to finance is the major reason for the discontinuance of an enterprise. There are few domestic equity sources, as well as limited sources of export finance, and SMEs’ participation in the stock market is minimal, due to their inability to meet the listing requirements, as well as their persistent tendency to operate as much as possible in the informal sector.

The commercial banks remain the primary formal source of finance for enterprises. Though banks are already encouraged to give more money to entrepreneurs, but procedures need to be simplified and information about financing schemes should be more widely available.

Gender dynamics

Nigeria stands along with the handful of countries with more women entrepreneurs than men and more early-stage female entrepreneurs than males. Africa leads the world in the number of women starting businesses, with almost equal levels of male and female entrepreneurs. In fact, in countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia the women outnumber the men.

Overall, the continent has a much higher proportion of female entrepreneurs compared to other regions, with Nigeria and Zambia (both 40.7 percent) coming on top and countries like the United States (10.4 percent), the UK (5.5 percent), Norway (3.6 percent) and France (3.1 percent) lagging far behind. According to Mike Herrington, executive director of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and professor at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the main reason for this is because women in Africa “need to earn an extra income to be able to afford to send their children to school.”

Young entrepreneurs

About 82 percent of Nigerian young people perceive a good opportunity to start a business while 86 percent believe that they have the skills and knowledge necessary to start a business. However, young males tend to have slightly higher intentions and perceptions of good entrepreneurial opportunities and capabilities than the young females.

Over 82 percent of Nigerian youths see entrepreneurship as a good career, 77 percent believe that successful entrepreneurs have high status and recognition and 78 percent are comfortable with the level of visibility that entrepreneurs enjoy in the media. The decision to go into entrepreneurship was mostly influenced by parents and friends. This is reflected in the fact that the majority of young entrepreneurs source their start-up finance from family and friends, and nearly half of them conduct their business from home or on the street.
