Gov. Fashola comes for Jimi Agbaje, accuses him of tax evasion

Lagos state Governor,Fashola has accused the state's PDP gubernatorial candidate, Jimi Agbaje of tax evasion. While speaking at the 8th Annual Stakeholder Taxation Conference in Ikeja yesterday, Jan. 28th, Fashola said Agbaje’s pharmaceutical company, JayKay pharmacy has not paid the state govt four years Land Use Charge, LUC, tax.

“LUC is ground rent and tenement rate as they were consolidated. I know that you have to vote next month but look at that candidate that would need to take over from me and be careful of who to vote for. You will remember that in 2007, he (Agbaje) claimed that he was in DPA and later crossed to PDP. You know that he manages a pharmacy called Jaykay Pharmacy, located at 9, Randle Close, Apapa. His pharmacy has not paid land Use Charge for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

They paid in 2013 and 2014 because they discovered that the election would be holding in 2015. His pharmacy owes this state N1, 629, 064.62. Let us do that mathematics to see how many facilities that funds would have provided in our hospitals and stationary in our schools. But this was the same person who was complaining that the state government spent three percent of its budget on education. Local Government is responsible for the management of the primary schools and yet he has withheld their taxes. This is the man who wants to be your next governor. And I will advice you that you avoid deception and tax evader,” he said.

31 Year Old Man Kills His 64 Year Old Father In Anambra

Tragedy struck in Urum community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday morning. A 31-year-old man, Mr Chinedu Nwafor-Nnalue suddenly went berserk and butchered his 64-year-old father, Mr. Nwafor Nnalue to death.

The man, it was gathered, had on many occasions threatened to kill his father before he finally cut him down while he was preparing to attend an elders’ meeting in the community. According to eyewitnesses, Chinedu, a father of three, had perfected his evil plans, enquiring from his family members around when they would be going out for the day, apparently to enable him enough time to perpetrate the evil act.

After murdering his father, the suspect was said to have vowed to kill his mum and other members of the household. The desperate cries of neighbors, it was gathered, saved the others from being killed, as youths in the community rushed to the scene and prevented the young man from completing his mission.

An eyewitness who spoke to Daily Sun said Chinedu had on several occasions chased his father about with a sharp cutlass, threatening to cut short his life but had always been prevented by the youths around. His grouse, it was gathered, was that his father was the cause of his misfortune.

According to Mr Chukwuma Nwoye, a nephew to the deceased, the killer-son would have terminated his father’s life long ago if not for the timely intervention of the youths around. He disclosed that the suspect had threatened to kill him that morning if he had attempted to rescue the deceased. Nwoye said the deceased had no issues with his son before he was murdered.

Hear him: “The deceased was my uncle. They were all living in the northern part of Nigeria when the boy became a Muslim. He equally married a Muslim. But he had been acting funny in recent times. He was even sent to South Africa by his family to make his life better. He was asked to do whatever he could do to make his life better, but he joined a gang of smokers. Since he came back, he had been exhibiting funny traits. He often chased his father about with a sharp cutlass to kill him. He had done that not less than four times. The last time he did that, we went and bought him this drug I have in my hand to see if that could get him back to his senses, because we thought; maybe he had some infections in the brain. In fact, he had even threatened to kill me if I drew near to prevent him from killing his father. He was wielding a very sharp machete. And one thing is that they were not having any issues or quarrel before.”

Another nephew to the deceased, Mr Chibuzo Chukwuemeka, said the suspect was a chronic Indian hemp smoker and had been behaving abnormally since he returned from Maiduguri where the family was living before. He said although the boy had no quarrel with his father, he had been behaving abnormally since he converted to Islam in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Hear him: “I came back from Lagos and this morning I was already on my way to board a vehicle back to Lagos when I received an emergency call to return. On coming back, I was informed that my uncle had been slaughtered by his son. Before I got home, he had died. The boy ran upstairs and locked himself up in the room and refused to open it until the police arrived and forced the door open. They got him arrested and then they took him to the police station. The deceased was equally taken to the mortuary.

“The boy converted to Islam in Maiduguri in the North East. He equally married an Hausa woman in the north and they have three children. So when he came back home, his attitude had changed. He is the fourth son of his family. He smokes Indian hemp, and the villagers had told of how he used to chase everybody about with a sharp cutlass. And he had been threatening to kill his father. This is the fourth time he was chasing his father about with cutlass, and finally he had succeeded in killing him

None of his immediate family members could speak to this reporter as they were visibly in shock, even as the deceased’s wife was said to have been taken to her family house for safety as at the time of filing this report.

Chairman of Urum Central Vigilante, Mr Alexander Nwafor spoke with Daily Sun on the issue. He said: “This morning, the town crier had sent a message for a meeting at Igwe’s Palace and we were all headed to the place. Suddenly, we started hearing a loud cry from the deceased’s house. When we got to the house it was horrible. The scene is better seen than told. The young man butchered his father and we thank God the police came in time. If not, many people may have gone down as well.

“He behaves like someone who is insane because he smokes Indian hemp. He had been threatening to kill his father every day. He kept saying he would kill his father. The worst part of it is that barely two minutes after he had killed his father, he told his mother that it was her turn to be slaughtered as well. In fact, when we arrived, he was threatening to kill any of us that gets close to him”

Hoodlums Burn APC's Campaign Vehicles In Akwa Ibom

Some hoodlums suspected to be working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday set ablaze two cars belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

The vehicles, a Volvo station wagon and a Toyota Hilux vehicle, were set ablaze alongside campaign canopies belonging to the opposition APC.

The attack on APC facilities occurred at the Oron Stadium, Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking on the development, the assistant director, Media and Publicity of Umana Okon Umana Campaign Organisation, Bonny Nyong, said before the attack, news had circulated in the local tabloids that the Oron local government chairman, Orman Esin, was arranging to hire thugs to attack the APC facilities.

But the director, Media and Publicity, Udom/Moses 2015 Campaign Organisation, Ekerette Udoh, dissociated the PDP from the attack on the APC.

Udoh stated that since Udom/Moses campaign is based on ideas on how to create employment for the teeming youths of the state, sponsoring attacks against political parties is alien to the organisation.

The commissioner of police, Akwa Ibom State, Gabriel Achong, condemned the attacks on Akpabio and on the APC campaign facilities at Oron Stadium.

and warned Oron youths against attacking any other political parties in the state.

He stated that the youths might have been disenchanted by Oronians by what they think it was their turn to produce the next governor.

His words: “When they stoned the PDP and the governor, we did not blame it on APC. If any other political parties still go there to campaign, they will still stone them.”

saying the development would engender other ethnic groups to also attack other political parties that would go to other areas for their electioneering.

The Police boss said the vehicles were burnt around 1am and the party did not contact the police before erecting their canopy for campaign at the stadium.

A man reportedly jumped from 3rd Mainland Bridge into the lagoon this morning

A few people have written to me this morning saying they saw a well dressed man driving a Toyota Sienna who parked on Third Mainland bridge, calmly walked over the rails and jumped into the sea. They said it happened so fast they couldn't believe they had witnessed an apparent suicide. Hopefully, we will get more details when government agencies in charge of such things get involved.

FG/INEC Should Declare A Public Holiday For PVC Collection

The chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Mr. Yinusa Tanko, has urged the Federal Government to declare a public holiday to help Nigerians collect their permanent voter cards.

Tanko made the call during a telephone interview with our reporter on Thursday, after he and other party leaders had met with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega.

“The challenge is that so many people are finding it difficult to leave their places of work to chase PVCs. Some of the places where the (collection) offices are, are far from where people are domiciled. If there is a general holiday, people would know that the day is for the collection of the PVC and they would spare time to go and collect it,” Tanko said.

The permanent voter cards are issued to potential voters who registered during an exercise that lasted for months. But collection has been hampered by poor logistics and chaos at collection points.

Tanko warned that the poor collection record could have an adverse effect on Nigeria’s democracy.

He said, “It is important for us to have this election. We can’t afford to go back to the (era of) June 12 when we had an election and the military truncated it. Therefore, we (the parties) have developed an attitude that says let’s find a solution to the problem.

“People were disenchanted with INEC before but the level of commitment shown by INEC gives room for a lot of hope. People didn’t understand that when you register and your name doesn’t appear in the register, then you haven’t registered. You would have to register again.”
