Auto Draft

Wolfgang Hans Langlois put safrole oil in wine bottles hidden in household items he shipped from Germany to Kauai, Honolulu last year. Customs agents intercepted the shipment and found the oil, which is legal but requires special permission to import.

Langlois pleaded guilty to smuggling but maintains the oil was not for ecstasy but for a legal substance he wanted to make for his wife, who has cancer

The shipment caught the attention of agents because Langlois’ name was on a watch list for people suspected of smuggling ecstasy to Hawaii from South America in vitamin and face cream jars in 2008, but Langlois was never charged in that case.

In August 2014, when agents in Los Angeles intercepted the shipment from Germany, they discovered 10 wine bottles containing an “unknown yellow liquid stored inside of a wooden nightstand in a suspicious manner,” according to an affidavit by a Homeland Security Investigations special agent.

Tests revealed the liquid was safrole oil, used to manufacture MDMA, also known ecstasy or molly.

Defense attorney William Harrison said Thursday his client is a chemist and was not trying to make ecstasy. Instead, Langlois wanted to use the oil to experiment with creating a legal, non-psychedelic, naturopathic medication to help his wife cope with breast cancer, Harrison said.

“They’re both very into organic practices … they grow their own food,” Harrison said.

The oil was removed from the shipment and replaced with fake oil. Agents obtained a warrant to use a tracking device and then allowed the shipment to continue to Lihue, Kauai, the affidavit said.

On Sept. 19, Langlois arrived at a pier to pick up the shipment, and agents followed him as he drove home. “Agents conducting surveillance noticed that the defendant was taking actions that appeared to be counter-surveillance techniques, such as stopping on the side of the main road without any apparent reason and by making turns while increasing and decreasing his speed,”
Eventually, the defendant proceeded to his residence.”

During a search of Langlois’ property, agents found what appeared to be a chemical laboratory, the affidavit said. The 7,500 milliliters of oil found could have produced 10,000 to 70,000 ecstasy pills, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Roberts.

Langlois pleaded guilty in January. In his
plea agreement, he admitted he flew from Hawaii to Germany, where he obtained the oil and intended to import it to the United States without telling customs
officials.

He apologized in court, saying he’s learned a lesson.

Nigerian Army To Dismiss 4,000 Soldiers

About 4,000 Nigerian soldiers will be dismissed for allegedly disobeying orders to fight Boko Haram insurgents.
One of the affected soldiers has told The Cable that the men are accused of flouting orders to fight terrorists during an operation conducted in Mubi, Adamawa state, in 2014.

Meanwhile, tension is reportedly growing
in the northeast as soldiers and their families are in suppressed agitation over the possibility of being axed.

According to one of the accused soldiers, the men will be dismissed without trial.
“We are accused of disobeying orders to fight insurgents and also for allowing them to takeover Mubi town the last time. The army headquarters sent signal for our dismissal,”he said.

The source further explained that soldiers who allegedly failed to participate in the Mubi operation were from the second division, Ibadan, made up of 200 soldiers, first division, Kaduna, which has about 500 soldiers, and “some from the third division, Jos, among others”.

The source revealed that about 227 soldiers from the third division in Jos and four soldiers from the Lokoja division had already been dismissed.

“We are now facing a fresh allegation of supporting General Buhari during the last election. We have also been accused of celebrating Buhari’s victory,”he said.

The soldier has called on authorities to intervene in the matter, investigate it and save their jobs.

However, Colonel Sani Usman, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, has dismissed allegations by saying:
“I am not aware where you got the information from, and I am sure there is no such plan. How can the army sack people like that? There is a standard operational procedure if anybody is accused of anything. First and foremost, the person has to be charged and tried before a sentence will be passed.

“To the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing. I do not know where you got the number. Four thousand soldiers? For what?”Usman wondered.

President Jonathan and his family wants to Travel out of the country

The president is likely to take this break shortly after handing over power to the incoming administration of Mohammadu Buhari on May 29.

According to Vanguard, Jonathan revealed this at a closed door meeting with the leadership of the party at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, May 13.

The meeting was meant to end the lingering crisis in the party after the general elections in which some PDP governors, party leaders, stakeholders and members have been calling for the sacking of the present National Working Committee, under Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.

President Jonathan urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to put behind them the defeat the party suffered during the March 28 presidential election. He also vowed to return stronger to help rebuild the party after taking a short break outside the country with his family.

Jonathan thanked the members of the
NWC for their support and heaped blame on his very close aides for the loss the party suffered. However, he promised that the PDP would bounce back to winning ways.

See reason why Real Madrid will not sell Gareth Bale

The future of Gareth Bale has become big news again over the course of the last week.

The Welshman hit the headlines after a particularly ineffective display for Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Juventus, in which he touched the ball on fewer occasions and completed fewer passes than goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

His presence on the field was incidental, and such a mute display was instantly criticised by the notoriously vocal Madrid support, not to mention former Manchester United star Roy Keane, who argued that it was as if Los Blancos were playing shorthanded in their 2-1 loss.
But this was not a one-off for the 25-year-old, whose performances this season have struggled to justify his world record price tag of €100 million.

As a result, Manchester United continue to be closely associated with the attacker, while neighbours City, Chelsea and even Bayern Munich have been following him.
Bale, however, is unlikely to find himself cast away from the Bernabeu this summer – and he has shown few inklings off the field, at least, that he wishes to depart.

For Madrid president Florentino Perez, he represents a source of egotistical pride. He cannot be allowed to fail in Spain, for that would represent a failure of the club president himself.

“Bale’s future will depend on the whims of Perez,” Ramon Calderon, the president’s predecessor, told ITB Times UK when quizzed over the player’s future.
“But you have to bear in mind that he much protects the players that he signed.

He has always defended those he has brought to the club. He doesn’t like to admit that he has made a mistake.”
Kaka represents a prime example. In 2009, the Brazilian was signed for €70 million, but despite failing to make the impression of a Ballon d’Or winner, Madrid persisted with the playmaker for four mediocre seasons before he eventually returned to Milan.

By contrast, Bale’s arrival in Spain has been a success.
The capital side have gambled much on him. Aside from the riches invested in his transfer fee and wages, there was also the opportunity cost of allowing Neymar to join Barcelona. As the Brazilian looks ever more comfortable alongside Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi for the Catalans, the pressure also grows on the former Tottenham man to improve.

Of course, the status of being the world’s most expensive player is one that brings a cursed expectation level, particularly when that player happens to join a club still dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rarely is the game’s biggest buy also the best player, and moving to Spain has simply opened the Wales star to direct comparison to the Ballon d’Or holder and Lionel Messi.
